The National Geographic Institute (IGN), who have been observing both the volcanic eruption off the coast of la Restinga, on the southern coast of El Hierro, and seismic activity off the coast of Frontera on the north of the Island, have reported further activity.


A further 18 earthquakes measuring over 1.5 on the richter scale were recorded between midnight and 09.00 hrs GMT, with the strongest being recorded at 3.0 at 04.15 hrs GMT in the El Golfo area of the coast of Frontera, at depths of 17 to 23km.

On the opposite side of the island, scientists on board the Roman Margaleff Oceanographic Research Vessel are still observing the las Calmas bay area in general. Following an increased level of activity over recent days, they are now reporting that, whilst the jacuzzi appears to have stopped for now and vents closed, this by no means suggests that activity has ended.

Eruption at El Hierro Creeping Towards the Surface

A brief update today on all the events at El Hierro – it looks like the eruption continues to work its way closer to the surface of the Atlantic as periodic explosions continue off the southern coast of the island. So far, there hasn’t been any sustained explosive activity that would make the eruption truly Surtseyan in nature, but the last few periods of heightened activity did see larger explosive “bubbles” in at the surface, some potentially as high as 25 meters (see above). The video of the activity clearly shows that the materials reaching the surface are very ash/tephra rich and in the photos of the chain of “jacuzzis”, you can see the clasts of volcanic debris floating (see below) on the surface. Some of the most recent estimates I’ve seen is that the vent is ~70 meters from the surface now, so close to that ~50 meter depth needed to truly get Surtseyan explosions to start occurring regularly. However, latest reports from El Hierro suggest that activity has subsided at the vents (via @teideano) – but government officials have still closed beaches near the eruption due to “toxic gases” (although the articles mentions copper sulfate as the gas, which is confusing to say the least).

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) have reported how seismic activity on the Island of El Hierro was reported yesterday evening at 18.17 and 18.41 GMT, measuring 3.1 on the richter scale, with a further 8 quakes being registered between midnight and 10.00 Hrs GMT measuring between 1.5 and 2.7 on the richter scale and at depths of between 18-22 kms.


Observers also report that, following yesterdays decrease in activity, the `Jacuzziaction erupting from the fissures on the ocean floor of las Calmas, off the coast of la Restinga.

The National Research Council announced this morning that a specially invited number of scientists and experts from the fields of Volcanology, Oceanography, Petrology, Geodynamics, Geochemistry, Meteorology and Atmospheric and Geologic Hazards will meet this afternoon.
The assembly has been called in order to advise the committee for the Special Plan of Civil Protection and Emergency Response for Volcanic Risk in the Canary Islands (PEVOLCA) who will inform the appropriate authorities and public bodies as soon as a common agreement with regards to what is actually happening, or about to happen on the island has been made.

PEVOLCA also intend to try and standardise all of the scientific methodology that is being applied to allow for easier interpretation of the data being observed.

Joke just arrived at Montaña Naos (Naos mountain) a viewpoint area 150 meter above sea level. She reports that a faint eruption zone is forming again, but without bubbles in the middle like we have seen the prior days.

The picture below was uploaded by Involcan (Instituto Volcanologico de Canarias) and shows the relation in between various parameters like : nr of volcanic earthquakes, the date when the eruption started and the CO² emitted before and after the jacuzzi or eruption action. The last 2 days are not included, so the graph ends with the strongest eruption phase explaining why the CO² values are that high. Clicking on the image will result in a larger picture.

Like we said already in our 13:42 update, El Hierro authorities are missing a great chance to promote the island. The webcam was promised to be functioning today, but it remains a promise only. Joke Volta did her best to get it done, but she is more used to the tomorrow promise on this otherwise so peaceful island.

- Joke Volta has requested at the El Pinar authority to install waste bins at the viewing point @ the montaña Naos as people are staying there for many hours and have their food and drinks with them, but no place to put the garbage . Her proposal was well received.

- a magnitude 4.6 earthquake happened in the El Golfo bay at 00:20 November 11. The depth was 21 km. This is one of the strongest earthquakes on El Hierro so far.
The earthquake was felt as a light to moderate shaking. If confirmed at 4.6 by IGN, the Los Roquillos tunnel maybe closed again. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the coastal El Golfo bay area.

- Jose Manuel Soria, the candidate of the Partido Popular for the presidency of the Canary Islands (elections to be held on November 20), is currently campaigning at El Hierro and wants to visit Montaña Naos to have a view at the eruption area. He may not be aware of all the journalists he will find at this viewing spot
The evacuated people at El Hierro as well as the business sector are highly dependent on aid from the Canary Islands government.
- Paulino Rivero, e memeber of the PSOE, is the current president of the Canary Islands and apart of a lot of promises, only little has been done to help the people of La Restinga and Las Puntas. Mr. Rivera has now approved bills for direct aid to business owners employing personnel.
- The central government has now given a period of 10 days to fill in the necessary documents to obtain aid.

The activity was measured at a depth of 21km at 00.20 GMT, with an epicenter in the El Golfo bay, off the northern coast of the Island.

The tremors were felt as far away as La Palma and Tenerife, which has heightened concerns that any seismic activity on the former Island "could" have an effect on the Cumbre Vieja Volcano. Observers have concerns that a collapse of the Volcano would cause a landslide, which would in turn cause a tsunami that could potentially devastate much of the eastern seaboard of the US.

Sources on the island have reported that the only incident arising from the activity is a landslide which closed the HI1 road, which was closed for a number of hours until the debris could be cleared.
A further 21 earthquakes were recorded between 2.8 and 3.1 on the richter scale, all located off the coast of Frontera to the north of the Island, according the IGN.

Meanwhile, two beaches on the south of the island, Tacoron and Puerto Naos have been closed to the public due to a government worker being taken ill while measuring carbon dioxide levels.

- The lack of powerful earthquakes and the continuing strong harmonic tremor are indicating (on the basis of the recent activity) that a new vent might have been opened at a deeper location, not showing any jacuzzi or serious turbulence. The first eruption period had similarities with the present situation. Recent satellite images would certainly reveal this kind of eruption.
