An interesting rumor has been circulating the past few days in the Kickboxing world, the rumor being that Gokhan Saki has left Golden Glory and instead set up shop at Mike's Gym.

The rumor does have some truths in it, but the truth part is a bit minor in the grand scheme of things. Martijn de Jong has been quoted saying that Gokhan Saki has indeed been doing some training at Mike's Gym, but it does not mean that he has left team Golden Glory.

The Dutch kickboxing world is just a small world and while there are gym rivalries, they are usually exaggerated in the press and most gyms are rather friendly with each other.

Anyway, here is the video that really sparked this rumor.

Voor ons waren er verschillende redenen om tot deze verkoop over te gaan. Allereerst vonden wij het al tijden spijtig dat niet alle goede vechters in 1 competitie vochten, en dat de kickboksliefhebbers daardoor mooie partijen werden onthouden. Ook waren wij van IT'S SHOWTIME diep onder de indruk van de positieve plannen van Glory Sports International om onze sport een gigantische impuls te geven. De zeer positieve en open houding naar ons toe heeft onze bedrijven de afgelopen maanden sterk naar elkaar toegebracht.

De financiële injectie die Glory Sports International wil geven aan onze sport is historisch, en alle wegen zijn nu open voor Glory om niet alleen de absolute nummer 1 van de kickboksindustrie te worden, maar ook om trendsettend te worden op verschillende andere vlakken.

In februari hadden wij ook afspraken gemaakt met Mr. Mike Kim van de K-1 om te helpen om de K-1 terug te brengen aan de top, en hiervoor zouden wij ook gewoon betaald worden.
Tevens hielpen wij de K-1 om vechters te contracteren en hebben wij de K-1 in contact gebracht met een lokale promotor in Madrid om zo het K-1-evenement van mei jl. mogelijk te maken.

Van wat Mr. Kim echter met zoveel bravoure aan ons bekendmaakte, kwam in de praktijk helemaal niets terecht. Vechters die in mei jl. hebben gevochten hebben tot op heden nog steeds geen geld ontvangen en de betalingstermijn is verstreken. Wederom worden de vechters niet betaald (Badr Hari en Mirko Filipovic hadden als enigen van de K-1 geëist om vooraf betaald te worden). De lokale promotor van Madrid had het K-1 geld voorgeschoten en ook dit bedrijf krijgt na honderden e-mailwisselingen dit geld niet terug. Deze lokale promotor gaat nu ook juridische stappen ondernemen.

Tevens, maar minder belangrijk, kwam de K-1 ook de financiële afspraken met ons bedrijf weer niet na en hebben ze ook hierbij weer contractbreuk gepleegd.

Mr. Kim betaalt zelfs tot op heden zijn eigen Japanse medewerkers niet meer en daarom verlaten zij op dit moment de K-1. Tevens wil Mr. Kim geen bankgarantie afgeven voor de 1 miljoen dollar aan prijzengeld die zij in het vooruitzicht hebben gesteld voor de winnaar van de K-1. Wij denken nu dat hij dit ook niet kan doen omdat er niet voldoende geld beschikbaar is. Ik denk stellig dat Mr. Kim een zware gok heeft genomen betreffende het overnemen van het merk K-1. Hij ging ervan uit dat er in de tussentijd een grote mede-investeerder zou komen of dat dit logo weer met dikke winst zou kunnen worden doorverkocht.
Van enige visie bij de K-1 is simpelweg geen enkele sprake. Al met al hebben en hadden wij alle vertrouwen verloren in de nieuwe K-1, die in de praktijk niet heeft gebracht wat ons is voorgehouden. Ook de evenementen in Amerika staan alweer op losse schroeven.

Met al deze feiten bij elkaar opgeteld hebben wij van IT'S SHOWTIME besloten om de enige en juiste stap te zetten door Glory voor 100% te steunen. De overname houdt in dat al het personeel van IT'S SHOWTIME vanaf heden al hun knowhow zal inzetten om te helpen om Glory daar te brengen waar wij denken dat Glory zal komen.

Ik zal me samen met Bert van der Ryd bezig houden om de evenementen voor Glory te verzorgen. Voor andere activiteiten binnen Glory worden of zijn al de beste specialisten ter wereld gecontracteerd.

Het is op dit moment nog niet 100% zeker of er in de toekomst alleen onder de naam Glory wordt georganiseerd of ook onder de naam IT’S SHOWTIME. Intern wordt hierover binnenkort besloten. In ieder geval gaat het evenement dat gepland staat op 21 juli op Tenerife gewoon door.

Eén ding staat als een paal boven water: door deze overname zullen de vechters en het publiek de grote winnaar worden. Vechters krijgen nu veel meer mogelijkheden om op meer evenementen te vechten, en het publiek krijgt weer alle sterke vechters tegen elkaar te zien.

Ikzelf ben nu dus in de gelukkige omstandigheid dat ik alleen hoef te doen waar mijn hart het meest ligt, en dat is organiseren. Dit, samen met de professionele staf van Glory, geeft mij de overtuiging dat het nu Glory-time is.

The K-1 organisation is not likely to proceed with previously-announced plans for events in the USA this year. Sources says that a targeted Madison Square Garden event is now “unfeasible” and that the organisation will be returning to a domestic Japanese and south-east Asia focus.

The reason is the weekend’s buyout of Its Showtime by the GLORY organisation, set up as a rival to K-1 in the premier league kickboxing sphere. K-1’s financial troubles over the past couple of years led to it being bought out by a Japanese-Korean investor named Michael Kim at the start of this year.

A partnership with Its Showtime - the main European promotion - was reached which allowed for talent-sharing and for K-1 branded events to take place in Europe, with Its Showtime and other local promoters bearing the brunt of the costs.

At the same time, the organisation announced a renewed focus on cracking the US market and that led to announcements of a Grand Prix event at the iconic Madison Square Gardens venue in New York, which has housed many legendary boxing bouts.

Unfortunately for a brand with such a distinguished heritage, most K-1 announcement these days are received with a heavy dose of scepticism and that was the case with the announcements regarding US events. However, it does seem that the recently-announced open tryouts for K-1 will be going ahead in California.

Under the partnership with Its Showtime, one K-1 branded show took place in Europe. Entitled K-1 Rising it took place in Madrid, Spain and featured Badr Hari and Mirko ‘CroCop’ on the card, as well as Daniel Ghita, Andy Souwer, Artur Kyshenko and Sergei Lascenko.

Of these, only Hari and CroCop are thought to have signed directly with K-1 rather than Its Showtime and as a consequence the acquisition of Its Showtime by GLORY has been disastrous in roster terms. K-1 has been left with access to a vastly reduced field of available fighters, with almost all of the big-name and rising talent now owing allegiance to GLORY.

At the weekend Simon Rutz, the head of Its Showtime, gave a statement about his relationship with K-1 and the K-1 Rising show, in which he accused the brand’s new owners of not paying their bills and leaving the local Spanish promoter with extensive costs to pay. He said it was because of this that he had decided a working relationship was untenable and to sell out to GLORY.

Today the new K-1 owner Michael Kim issued a short statement of his own in which he claimed that Rutz’s allegations were untrue. He says that “almost all the money for the fighters who participated in the event has been paid” and that “a few did not get paid because the person who introduced these fighters to us, Simon Rutz, has yet to provide us their payment details and that has prevented us from wiring them their money.”

Regarding the promoter money, Kim admits that there was a delay in “reconciling the expenses” but says that an agreement has now been reached “in writing on payment amounts and payment methodology” - suggesting that instalments may be the order of the day.

If that is the case, it mirrors the practice of the previous K-1 owners - paying fighters after their bouts by instalment on a delayed basis - and won’t entice potential new investors. There is presently no news on the next K-1 fight event to take place, although a heavyweight grand prix is apparently planned for Japan later this year.

Albert Kraus and Robin van Roosmalen represent the kickboxing powerhouses of the Netherlands, while Shemsi Beqiri travels down from the mountains of Switzerland to stake his claim.

From America comes the hard-hitting Ky Hollenbeck, on a mission to prove that the USA can produce world-class kickboxers, and from England comes the tricky Tim Thomas. From the steppes of Asia, Davit Kiria and across the cold northern seas from Sweden, the young prospect Sanny Dahlbeck.

UFC Heavyweight Alistair Overeem has been announced to take part in an upcoming event for K-1. Overeem will be attending the K-1 Open Tryouts being held July 19 at Muscle Beach in California. Reem will join Tyrone Spong, former K-1 MAX champion Masato and others as a judge who will be evaluating participants for spots on future K-1 cards.

Overeem is the 2010 K-1 Grand Prix champion, which also makes him the reigning champion. It's a nice bit of continuity that he will be taking part here, plus a wise PR move, as Reem's presence will immediately draw the eyes of more MMA fans, which is an audience the new K-1 needs to tap into, especially as they hope to break into the US market.

Still, his involvement raises a few eyebrows. Overeem has had nothing to do with K-1 since winning the GP and refocusing on his MMA career, and now that he is in the UFC, an appearance to help promote another organization is a bit surprising. It's also notable because Overeem has been publicly critical of K-1 since winning the GP, claiming he was owed large sums of money and that he did not want to be involved with K-1 anymore. That was under the old, FEG-owned K-1, but it's a positive sign for the future that Overeem is willing to work with the new ownership, even just in this small capacity.

I feel confident in saying this is just Reem doing some promotion and nothing more, but still, with issues surrounding his UFC tenure, and with Reem's history as a shrewd self-marketer, might he also be keeping his options open in case a return to K-1 down the road becomes a necessity?
