The Information Ministry on Sunday launched a campaign in cooperation with the Interior Ministry's censorship department to check the permits of 16 satellite channels broadcasting from Egypt.
Informed sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the office of Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr, which began transmission following the ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak in February, was raided by Egyptian authorities.
According to Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr’s news bar, one of the channel’s broadcast engineers was arrested and a piece of equipment confiscated.
Information Minister Osama Heikal on Wednesday announced that the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces and the cabinet decided after a joint meeting that day to temporarily suspend granting new permits to satellite channels.
Participants in the meeting also decided to prosecute satellite channels deemed threatening to the stability of the country.
Egyptian rights organizations meanwhile condemned the decision, saying it is a regression to the oppressive policies of Mubarak's regime.
The April 6 Youth Movement threatened to take legal action against the decisions.

The first session of the much-anticipated trial of the alleged masterminds of the notorious “Battle of the Camel,” including two of Hosni Mubarak's long-serving aides, provoked consternation on Sunday after the judge ordered a ban of live television transmission and barred the bulk of the plaintiffs’ lawyers from the courtroom after scuffles with police.
For almost one hour, state-owned television aired the trial of 25 defendants accused of recruiting thugs to “terrify” and kill peaceful demonstrators in Tahrir Square on 2 February, arming many of the attackers with melee weapons and live ammunition.
The highpoint of the broadcast consisted of shots showing Mubarak’s former protgs Safwat al-Sherif and Ahmed Fathi Sorour languishing inside the dock. Dressed in prison white, Sherif, 77, former speaker of the Shura Council and former secretary general of the disbanded National Democratic Party (NDP), and Sorour, 79, former speaker of the People's Assembly, appeared clam and well. Sherif had his hair dyed brown as usual.
The judge for the trial, Justice Mostafa Hassan Abdel Allah, dedicated the first part of today's session to hearing the demands of tens of lawyers representing the defendants. After a short recess, he announced the end of live television transmission of the trial.
"This proves that there is a strong inclination to impose restrictions on the media and on people's access to information," said Gamal Eid, a lawyer and executive director of the Arab Network for Human Rights Information. He added that his organization will appeal this decision soon in an administrative court.
“This is a public opinion case and the decision to impose the ban should be justified and should be for clear reasons and for a limited period of time," added Eid, whose organization represents many of revolution’s victims in several court cases nationwide.
However, Ahmed Ragheb, director of the Hisham Mubarak Law Center, interpreted the media ban as an indication that the trial might be “impartial.”
Ragheb, whose organization represents some of the victims of the attacks, said that plaintiffs’ lawyers may file a request for a change of judge, on the grounds of his alleged loyalty to the old regime. Ragheb refers to an acquittal verdict that Abdel Allah handed down in a case against a former prominent NDP parliamentarian.
In 2008, Justice Abdel Allah acquitted Hani Sorour, a former member of the People’s Assembly and CEO of a medical supplies company, who was accused of providing hospitals with contaminated blood bags. The verdict caused outrage among many observers and was seen then as a sign of corruption. Later, Sorour was convicted by another court and sentenced to three years in prison.
The Battle of the Camel represented a turning point in the 18-day uprising that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak, galvanizing support for the revolutionary forces and causing thousands of previously undecided observers to join the anti-regime protests.
On 1 February, Mubarak addressed the nation with an emotional speech, expressing his desire to live the rest of his life and die on Egyptian soil. He also affirmed that he would step down at the end of his term in September and promised a set of constitutional amendments to open up the political space. His speech hit a nerve with many Egyptians, who sympathized with the ailing 83-year-old dictator and felt there was no need for more protests.
But this sympathy evaporated quickly in light of developing events on the streets of Cairo.
In the early afternoon of 2 February, large groups of hired thugs flooded Tahrir Square to attack protesters with rocks, clubs, bladed weapons and chains. Among the attackers were some riding horses and camels, from which the incident took it's common name. Some of the attackers climbed on the rooftops of buildings and threw Molotov cocktails and allegedly fired bullets at demonstrators. The violence lasted more than 12 hours and left 11 dead.
Contrary to the expectations of those organizing the attacks, they provoked widespread anti-Mubarak feeling and helped force his resignation on 11 February.
Along with Mubarak's two prominent protgs, several other former parliamentarians and businessmen languished in the cage during Sunday’s session, including former Manpower Minister Aisha Abdel Hady, the former head of Egypt's Federation of Trade Unions, Hussein Mogawer, prominent businessman and former leader of the NDP, Ibrahim Kamel, and controversial lawyer Mortada Mansour.
After the prosecutors' lengthy presentation of the charges, Abdel Allah asked each defendant to comment. From inside the cage, Sherif, the prime suspect in the case, said: "I completely deny them." At his turn, Sorour replied: "I have nothing to do with this issue. All accusations are void and defamatory." All the remaining suspects denied the charges.
Besides the ban on live transmission, the plaintiffs’ lawyers complained about being barred from attending the session.
Earlier in the day, clashes erupted between lawyers and the police as the former tried to gain access to the courtroom. Eventually, the judge banned them from entering. However, by the time the ban was imposed, dozens of lawyers representing the defendants had already gained access to the courtroom.
"The situation was so chaotic, and the end result was that only one or two of the plaintiffs’ lawyers managed to get inside," said Ragheb.
Ragheb accused some supporters of the defendants, as well as their lawyers, of starting the fight with police in order to prompt the judge to declare a ban on lawyers entering the court.
The trial is set to resume on Monday for three days.

quote:Emad Ibrahim, a lawyer representing revolutionary martyrs in Beni Suef, dropped a bombshell on Tuesday during the fourth session of the case into the killing of demonstrators during the revolution, in which former Security Director Ahmed Shawqi and 12 others are charged.
Ibrahim said the Interior Ministry issued checks totalling LE120,000 to four plaintiffs who were wounded by security forces, in return for changing their testimonies.
The victims filed a report against Mohamed Tanbash, the fourth defendant, saying he tried to force them to accept their share of the money and drop the lawsuit.
The lawyer of the defendants requested that his clients, who are still free, should not be detained by police.
The court was adjourned until 13 October.
quote:Fears rise as Egypt cracks down on press
The authorities in Egypt have widened emergency laws and clamped down on the press, raising fears of a curtailment of the liberties gained after the popular uprising which toppled Hosni Mubarak, the former president, earlier this year.
The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, in power during a promised transition to elected rule, said on Sunday night that it was widening emergency legislation to cover a range of “threats to public order” including “attacks on the freedom to work” – code for strikes – and the deliberate dissemination of rumours and false information.
“The most dangerous thing is that they have amended the emergency law to cover what they consider crimes committed by journalists,” said Gamal Fahmy, a board member of the journalists union. “The text is vague and can stretch to cover all sorts of criticism of the authorities.”
quote:Al-Jazeera Egypt shut down for ‘sowing dissent’
CAIRO — The satellite channel Al-Jazeera Egypt said on Sunday the authorities had prevented it from broadcasting, after entering its offices and confiscating transmission equipment.
Ahmed Zain, the channel's chief in Cairo, told AFP that police, officers from the culture ministry and representatives of Egypt's public broadcaster had also seized materials and that one technician was arrested.
He said they cited the lack of an official licence to broadcast and a complaint from the neighbourhood. He said a lawyer also presented a complaint accusing the channel of "sowing dissent" and "calling for demonstrations."
quote:Members of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) are willing to renew protests and even risk their lives if the authorities do not submit to the will of the people, said Hassan al-Brince, a member of the MB's administrative bureau in Alexandria.
At a conference organized by the MB on Tuesday, Brince said the MB considers 27 September as the date when the legitimacy of the transitional period ends. He also accused what he described as “remnants of the former regime” of spreading chaos in an attempt to delay the upcoming parliamentary elections and extend military rule.
“We completely and absolutely refuse the so-called supra-constitutional principles, and we are demanding the elections be held on time, without the Emergency Law,” said Brince.
“We will not allow the US and EU to enforce their agendas and homosexuality-promoting laws and the abolition of Islamic Sharia, as the people will not abandon Islam," he continued.
Muslim Brotherhood luminary Sobhi Saleh said the supra-constitutional principles issued by Deputy Prime Minister Ali al-Selmy were “unconstitutional, undemocratic and unpractical" and that the cabinet had no authority to issue such principles.
“We invite the government to withdraw this document and apologize for it, as it is a great insult to the people,” said Saleh. “We will not accept anything other than the Islamic Sharia, and we will not rest until the Islamic Sharia is fully applied.”
Meanwhile, Freedom and Justice Party Secretray General Hussein Ibrahim accused Prime Minister Essam Sharaf’s cabinet of conspiring against the Egyptian people. He said that the revolution achieved a number of major objectives, the most significant of which was the toppling of ousted President Hosni Mubarak and his regime, as well as bringing former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly to trial.

Egypt Ezz Steel falls 8.9 pct after court verdict
CAIRO, Sept 15 | Thu Sep 15, 2011 7:42am EDT
(Reuters) - An Egyptian court on Thursday sentenced steel magnate Ahmed Ezz, who held senior party posts under ousted President Hosni Mubarak, to 10 years in jail and fined 660 million Egyptian pounds ($110.9 million) for corruption.
Amr Assal, ex-head of Egypt's Industrial Development Authority, was sentenced to 10 years and the same fine. The presiding judge said it would be up to Ezz and Assal to pay back 660 million pounds together, representing the total of public money he said they had wasted.
The court also sentenced former Trade and Industry Minister Rachid Mohamed Rachid in absentia to 15 years and a fine of 1.4 billion Egyptian pounds. Rachid, believed to be outside Egypt, had been sentenced in July to five years in prison for squandering public funds.
Ezz, who quit the board of Ezz Steel and its Ezz Dekheila Steel unit on May, has denied any wrongdoing. The three men were found guilty of collaborating to grant licences without paying fees. The judge revoked the licences.
The ruling can be appealed at the Court of Cassation.
Ezz was a senior official in Mubarak's National Democratic Party, which was dissolved after the popular uprising that ousted the autocratic president from power in February. ($1 = 5.957 Egyptian Pounds) (Writing by Edmund Blair and Andrew Hammond; Editing by Mark Heinrich)

quote:The Interior Ministry used snipers to kill the demonstrators during the 25 January revolution, an Al-Masry Al-Youm investigation has revealed.
This revelation contradicts current Interior Minister Mansour al-Essawy, who has repeatedly denied that the Interior Ministry ever had sniper units within its security forces.
Al-Masry Al-Youm has obtained official Interior Ministry documents classified as "top secret and not for publication."
The documents contain the names of sniper teams that were paid by the Interior Ministry, which at the time was run by Habib al-Adly. They also disclose the different governorate locations at which these units received their training.
Retired General Mohamed Nasser, one of the founders of the Interior Ministry's international terrorism department, stressed the existence of "sniper elements" in the department.
Al-Masry Al-Youm accompanied Mahmoud Adel, who was shot during the revolution, as he visited former Chief Medical Examiner Ayman Fouda to have his leg wound examined.
Fouda said that Adel has a fracture in his right thigh created by a bullet that fragmented upon impact, claiming that the bullet could not have been fired from a short range.
The oval shape of Adel's injury suggests that he was shot from a high location, Fouda added.
Interior Ministry snipers usually use 800-meter-range rifles, Nasser said, adding that their bullets penetrate the body swiftly, accurately, and deeply. He also said that the units use many different types of rifles.
The fact-finding committee set up by the Egyptian government to investigate the killing of protesters in Tahrir Square during the revolution found that "the police fired live ammunition while hunting [protesters] from the roofs of the buildings overlooking Tahrir Square."
Al-Masry Al-Youm also obtained a document dated 1 February from the Interior Ministry's operations room containing an order for two snipers to begin an operation.
A copy of the testimony of Mohamed Diaa Eddin, a doctor at the Department of Surgery and the Department of Accidents at Qasr al-Aini Hospital, was also obtained. Diaa Eddin was working in the Department of Accidents from 27 January to 7 February.
In his testimony, he said that hundreds of people arrived at the hospital from Tahrir during this period who had received "bullets in the chest and in [vital areas of the body], showing that the shooters had attempted to kill protesters."
