WiiU To Consider The Future Of Televisions
Speaking to investors, Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, said that Nintendo will market the Wii U as “slightly different” from a regular home console, due to its ability to have the controller itself substitute for a television set. In English press releases, Iwata says, the word “console” is required to help communicate the idea of the system. In Japan, however, the words “home console” will not be used at all.

This is so that Nintendo can communicate the idea of a changing lifestyle, where one no longer needs to sit in front of a television. in order to play a console game. Speaking further on the subject of televisions, Iwata elaborated: “In addition, I would like to use this occasion to talk about something I was hoping to talk about someday. That is, what is going to happen to the TV?”

In Japan, July 24th marked the end of analog television broadcasting after 58 years, switching over to terrestrial digital media broadcasting instead. What this means is that, everyone in Japan that owns an analog television will need to upgrade to digital televisions to watch T.V. The only areas exempt from this switch are those that were affected by the Tohoku earthquake. These areas won’t be required to make the switch to digital until next year.

As a result, several families in Japan have recently upgraded their televisions, and won’t be doing so again any time soon. However, Iwata says that he sees ads in electronics magazines that talk about new televisions with multiple screens or how they can interact with smartphones. For Japanese families, the appeal of the Wii U would be being able to turn their existing T.V. into a multi-screen display that works closely with the Internet.

“Please think that the Wii U is a product that is a combination of a proposal for a ‘new play style that is not restricted to the TV,’ a proposal for a ‘new kind of entertainment using multi-screens’ and also ‘the future of TV’,” Iwata told investors.

He emphasized: “The Wii U is not simply a Wii with a different user interface and we are not proposing to society a performance-enhanced Wii, rather we are proposing hardware with a totally different concept and vision.”

We are wondering: Is Nintendo still certain about the appeal of its Wii U console? The company has just pulled the device from the display of Europe’s most significant video game trade show later this month.

Nintendo confirmed that it has decided not to show the Wii U at GamesCom 2011 in Cologne, Germany (August 17 – 21). The company also canceled all press events surrounding the Wii U and simply said that “security concerns” are the reason why it can’t show and discuss the Wii U.

Security concerns? Seriously?

The Wii U was met with enthusiastic first look reports when Nintendo showed a rather half-baked device on June 7 at E3 in Los Angeles. The console was far from being ready for prime time, but was pitched as Nintendo’s next idea how the company aims to transform the traditional video game console at home. Analysts, however, were generally less excited and we have to admit that we also have concerns about the relatively bulky touch screen game controllers that may not only be expensive, but may also alienate Nintendo’s current customer base of Wii lovers.

We don’t know whether this is the case, but we do know that Nintendo’s previous confidence in its ability to transform the video game market has cracks. The 3DS has completely missed its mark – it was priced wrong and Nintendo could have invested in a technology – 3D- that may not be worth as much as it thought and a dramatic price cut is now put in place to save Nintendo from a catastrophic blunder. Since the release of the Wii in 2006, the video game market has changed and has become incredibly competitive. Nintendo may be strong enough to survive the 3DS, but it may not be able to survive a failure of the Wii successor.

The console following the Wii will have to address the market the Wii so successfully created and expand on it by fixing the errors Nintendo has made with the Wii: The Wii U will need many more third-party games and have more hardcore gamer appeal. In the end, all those casual gamers that are in love with Wii Bowling are unlikely to buy many games – hardcore gamers are the lucrative customer base Nintendo really wants. However, giving up the casual gamer may be a dangerous game and Microsoft is just waiting to attack Nintendo and steal casual gaming customers who are willing to move up, and who are willing to spend more money on hardware, content and services. Nintendo has more than 60 million Wii customers and it should try to keep as many of them as possible.

The Wii U is, in this view, a very controversial console. It will be tough for Nintendo to explain the value of a tablet controller, if it could have integrated the existing DS with the Wii and if we think about the fact that a 2 player system Wii U is unlikely to cost less than $400 – $500. There was nothing wrong with the Wii controller and a simple evolution could have been a recipe for success: A tablet is more complicated and clumsy to use, it will limit the number of people who are able to use such a tablet (young kids, for example, are not likely to enjoy a bulky tablet as a controller) and is, in our view, the wrong way to go for Nintendo.

Pitching a Wii U that changes the Wii’s model of success may be an overly risky move for Nintendo at this time. We have heard before that Nintendo may be reconsidering the tablet-style controller and possibly making it optional. Nintendo’s unexpected decision to pull the Wii U from GamesCom 2011 will fuel more speculation that the console could be changing.

Security concerns? We don’t buy it.

Wii U rumors: Limiting chipset for controller, developer issues, release date talk
01Net published an article yesterday regarding information they’ve received about the 3DS. Today, they’ve followed up with some Wii U rumors.

The first topic of discussion focuses on the controller’s main chipset. There is apparently some concern that it is limiting. 01Net’s source goes as far as to say that it might be “a tad too cheap”. The site also claims that wireless capabilities aren’t functioning just yet and a fourth prototype will be made available before month’s end.

“So far, the Wii U controller’s main chipset – that manages the device’s essential functions, including streaming and wireless – seems inadequate. This chip, described by our source as maybe a tad too cheap, has been the sources of many headaches in recent weeks. So far, the wireless functions simply do not work – at all. There have been so far three different prototypes, and a fourth iteration is expected by select developers at the end of the month.”

01Net goes on to discuss the controller, which “is fitted with a small black box”. The kits supposedly don’t work as they should and developers are allegedly having issues with Wii U.

01Net’s comments in full on the situation:

“So far, developers are working with a tethered controller: each one is fitted with a small black box with a tethered connection to the main unit. And even then, it still doesn’t work properly. Many developers are feeling lost, their progress impeded by a distinct lack of visibility, their working days paced by the quasi-daily software updates. In those conditions, many feel unable to properly exploit the system’s most innovative and promising features, those very features they haven’t been able to test properly so far.”

You have to wonder how much of this is true. So far, third-parties have been very positive about creating games for Wii U. Vigil, for instance, even said that “it’s definitely a lot easier [to develop for] than say the PS3 was.”

Lastly, 01Net talks about when Wii U may launch. Although “developers are still expecting a June 2012 release”, it could be delayed to September. That’s assuming any of this is even true, of course.

“Ten months before the tentative release date – developers are still expecting a June 2012 release – the fact that Nintendo engineers are still struggling to make this supposedly final architecture function properly is worrisome at best. Could Nintendo have to make radical last-minute changes, and if so, what would be the cost? This unexpected development runs contrary to Nintendo’s reputation for carefully weighing all tech options long before any announcement. Inside the company, there have been talks of a delayed release, with September as a new tentative date. Being three months off-schedule doesn’t seem such a big issue, when compared to a home console’s life cycle. But this is not 2006 anymore. The industry is undergoing a radical mutation, and there is a growing amount of rumors positioning Microsoft’s next system to be unveiled during the 2012 E3 conference, and a relase in short order. If that was to happen, the Wii U would only enjoy a few months of ‘optimal run’ alongside the Xbox 360, which would essentially moot the much-touted ease with which developers can port 360 code for the Wii U. To succeed in its incredibly audacious endeavour, Nintendo will have to walk a very tight rope.”

Like yesterday’s report, you should take 01Net’s article with a grain of salt…

We are also planning to launch the Wii U, which is the successor to the Wii, during the next fiscal year. We would like to show the final format of the Wii U at the E3 show next year. As we learned a bitter lesson with the launch of the Nintendo 3DS, we are trying to take every possible measure so that the Wii U will have a successful launch.
