Jetstar and Qantas have grounded flights in and out of Christchurch, Wellington and Queenstown tomorrow as a volcanic ash cloud causes further disruption.
Qantas will not be flying to and from Christchurch until 11pm tomorrow, and to and from Wellington until 2pm tomorrow. Its Queenstown services are suspended until further notice.
Jetstar said tonight its flights from the centres are suspended until midday tomorrow.
The ash cloud moved south last night creating a flight ceiling of around 20,000 feet, causing more cancellations today.
Peter Lechner from the Civil Aviation Authority said the ash cloud from the Chilean volcano is moving up the South Island.
"It'll cover most of the South Island later today and probably the southern part of the North Island tomorrow," he said.
"We expect the cloud as such to probably move off the area late Friday maybe Saturday morning," Lechner said.
But the cloud is not expected to reach as far as Palmerston North before it finally moves offshore.
Today's flight cancellations follow an announcement from MetService advising that volcanic ash was expected in parts of the lower South Island at altitudes above 20,000 feet.
quote:Though less dramatic than the initial eruption in June, Chile’s Puyehue-Cordón Volcano Complex continued releasing ash and steam in early July 2011. Shifting winds moved the plume in different directions, sometimes over the Pacific and sometimes over South America, where ash interfered with air traffic.
On July 8, 2011, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite observed the plume blowing toward the east-southeast (top). On July 2, 2011, MODIS on NASA’s Aqua satellite observed the plume blowing toward the northwest (bottom).
Volcanic plumes can contain a combination of ash, steam, and gases invisible to the human eye. The light color of the plumes in these images suggests that the visible components in the plumes are a mixture of water vapor and some ash. Ash already deposited by this eruption coats the landscape east of Puyehue-Cordón in beige.
Unlike the soft ash from wildfires, volcanic ash consists of jagged particles of rock and glass. Abrasive, slightly corrosive, and capable of conducting electricity when wet, volcanic ash can complicate breathing, coat vegetation and leave it inedible, and even destroy machinery. Planes flying into volcanic ash clouds can experience rapid engine failure.
Volcanic ash released by Puyehue-Cordón continued to cause difficulty in South America in early July. Agence France-Presse reported that the plume disrupted air travel in parts of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. Meanwhile, provinces in southwestern Argentina were in a state of emergency because of widespread damage from the ash layer.
SERNOGEOMIN, Chile’s geology and mineral agency, reported that although ash and steam emissions continued, activity had decreased significantly and lava flows had apparently stopped. The agency did not rule out a future explosive eruption, although it reported such an event would be unlikely to equal the magnitude of the June event.
Jawel, maar nu is het niet actueel. Vlieg wsl volgende week donderdag terug ipv deze zatquote:
quote:Vulkaanas hindert verkeer boven Buenos Aires
(belga/vsv)
quote:Eruption at Puyehue continues
The eruption at Chile’s Puyehue-Cordón Caulle continues after starting in early June of this year. The current plume is much smaller than during the opening phases of the eruption, topping out at ~4.5 km (some as high as 7.5 km). However, high atmospheric winds are carrying the ash away and disrupting air travel throughout the region. Depending on the wind, the ash from Puyehue-Cordón Caulle is being carried 120-250 km from the vent, depending on the winds.
Once the ash and volcanic tephra is erupted, it isn’t the end to the hazard they pose. This image shows the accumulation of ash and volcanic tephra (video) on the waterways around Puyehue-Cordón Caulle, especially Lago Huishue, Gris and Constania on the eastern side of the image. Some smaller lakes are completely covered in volcanic debris. These deposits can be easily mobilized into the drainages and produce small lahars and mudflows that bring debris even further away. The drainage in the lower left hand side is grey with ash and volcanic debris that can clearly be seen entering Lago Puyehue as large, grey plumes. These accumulations of volcanic debris will likely be remobilized for years to decades after the eruption ends.

quote:Chile volcano ash disrupts air travel for hours
Flights were canceled for several hours in Uruguay and Argentina Tuesday due to volcanic ash from the four-month-long eruption of the Puyehue volcano in Chile, airport authorities said.
Laura Vanoli, Uruguay's chief aeronautic meteorologist, said the country was almost entirely covered by an ash cloud.
"It's remnants of ash," she said, adding that there will be a risk of disruption as long as the volcano remains active.
About a dozen flights by airlines including Aerolineas Argentinas, American, Iberia and TACA were suspended in Uruguay, while other flights were delayed, the website of the Carrasco International Airport serving Montevideo said.
In Buenos Aires, airport authorities said some 20 flights were canceled, and said other flights were delayed because of poor visibility due to the ash.
However by the afternoon air traffic was returning to normal in both Uruguay and Argentina, though with delays due to the postponed flights.
Since the volcano's eruption on June 4, air travel in much of the southern cone of South America, and as far away as Australia, has been periodically disrupted by ash clouds streaming east out of the Chilean Andes.
Chile's National Geology and Mining Service said that ashes from the Puyehue -- which continues belching, though at a lower intensity -- could affect air travel for months.
The decision to delay or cancel flights is taken by the airlines over concern about how the fine ash would affect airplane engines.
quote:Chilian ONEMI raises status of Lascar Volcano
This first came up in the news yesterday, but I thought it deserved its own spot. Lascar, one of the more active volcanoes of northern Chile, was placed on heightened alert status by the ONEMI (Chilean Emergency Management) on advice from the SERNAGEOMIN (Chilean Geologic Survey). The latest report from Lascar says that over 300 small earthquakes (pdf) have occurred at the volcano in the last 26 hours, leading to an elevation of its status to Yellow – however, there have been no indications of increased fumarolic activity at the volcano. Lascar has the potential to produce a large eruptive column – the 1993 eruption sent ash as fall east as Buenos Aires – with pyroclastic flows that could reach nearby towns such as Talabre. The volcano has been through a number of cycles of significant explosive activity over its >43,000 year history. However, recent activity is mostly lava dome formation in the summit crater followed by crater collapse and vulcanian to plinian explosive eruptions such as the major eruption of April 1993. However, it also have the potential to produce small explosions that will only dust ash on the countryside surrounding the volcano as it has done at least 6 times in the last decade. ONEMI is preparing for possible evacuations for people near the volcano – mostly either miners in the area or tourists at San Pedro de Atacama. If anything does occur, there is a webcam pointed at Lascar to see the action.
