(Adriasang)quote:It's well known now that Sony will be having a big Tokyo press event on the 27th where it will unveil the PlayStation Portable 2. An analyst has clued us in to the event's name: "PlayStation Meeting."
Sony used to have PlayStation Meeting events periodically, but Thursday's installment will be the first event with the name in six years.
The last time Sony had a PlayStation Meeting was July 25, 2005. Then CEO Ken Kutaragi outlined Sony's PlayStation 3 plans through slides (see this story at IGN for a recap), Namco Bandai showed a live demonstration of what would become its terrible PS3 Gundam launch game, and we first heard the title "Lair" for Factor 5's new PS3 game. (There's a full index of happenings at IGN).
Analyst Yasuaki Fujima mentioned the PlayStation Meeting name in a Tweet earlier this week. He said that we can probably expect unexpected major announcements simply because the timing of the event comes ahead of Sony's third quarter earnings announcement, which is scheduled for February 3. He also added that it's possible to view the event as Sony's means of dealing with the 3DS by turning the attention onto itself.
The revival of the PlayStation Meeting name sounds like a perfect occasion to take the lid of PlayStation Portable's successor.

Details on new system leak out via Japanese newspaper.

An old fan rendering of what a new PSP could potentially look like. Most current reports indicate that the system will not have a sliding design.
Nikkei has some preliminary details on Sony's next generation PlayStation Portable system.
According to the paper, the new system will have 3G support. In Japan, the 3G service will be provided by NTT DoCoMo.
Using the 3G connection, gamers will be able to play online games and download software and movies. The service will not allow for phone calls.
The system will also have standard wireless LAN, of course. However, the 3G support will allow players to connect online wherever DoCoMo has wireless service. DoCoMo is Japan's largest mobile carrier.
Separate from the wireless functionality, the paper reports that the new PSP will make use of an OLED touch screen which will be larger than normal. Regarding the system's internals, the paper reports that Sony has developed a new processor for handling high resolution visuals.
Pricing on the next generation PSP is currently TBA, according to the paper. The paper does not mention possible subscription fees associated with the 3G service, or the possibility of a Wi-Fi only model.
The paper also makes brief mention of the device that many are calling "Playstation Phone," a smart phone that includes game features. This will have button-based controls, the paper reports, making games control easier. The device will use Google's Android operating system and will allow users to access non-game software like video and scheduling software.
Sony is expected to take the veil off the new PSP system at a press conference on the 27th. The PlayStation cell phone device is expected to be unveiled next month.

quote:Rumor: The First Official Shot Of The PSP2?
While the PSP2 is not yet official, there have been fan Photoshop creations. Apparently, this is not a fan-made creation. Apparently, this is a Sony-made one. But is it?
Granted, this could very well be another slick Photoshop, but this week Sony is expected to unveil the new PlayStation Portable, which is currently being called the PSP2. As the reveal approaches, this art work surfaced online today on 2ch, Japan's largest online forum.
The photo features a handheld believed to be the PSP2, which has a PSPgo style sliding shell. There is a 32 GB SD memory card as well, plus a "PSP2" Memory Stick. There is a long, thin stylus as well. According to Japan's Nikkei newspaper, the PSP2 will have a touch screen. Unlike the current PSP, there are two analog nubs, giving this handheld a controller layout similar to the PS3.
What is fishy about the picture is that it appears to be a photograph of a handout of some kind. While handouts may be present at the January 27 press conference, it's also a good way for a Photoshopper to hide their work, as it masks any differences in resolution you'd be able to detect in an online image.
Official Sony art is typically at a higher resolution, but this art is not, which also sends off alarm bells. The buttons and the d-pad look to be at a slightly different resolution. The copyright in the bottom left, which appears on official Sony images, is cut off, too. Likewise, odd. However, as mentioned above, this purported PSP2 image could be photo taken of official Sony art or of an official Sony handout, hence these resolution inconsistencies.
The memory stick in this photo looks more akin to the Memory Stick Sony previously used and not the Memory Sticks currently in production, further throwing doubt on its authenticity. The thumbsticks are in a different location from photos that appeared last fall of what is supposedly the PSP2.
Last October, Kotaku broke the news that the PSP2 will ditch the UMD format and could very well rival the Xbox 360 in horsepower. Kotaku also reported then that the PSP2 will have dual analog sticks, a touch pad, a bigger screen and go on sale in fall 2011.
Whether or not it is real, won't be known for sure if and when the rumored PSP2 is finally made public. However, Kotaku is reaching out to Sony and will update this post should the company comment.
