What's all this then?
This is the Pandora, a pocket-sized gaming computer. It's a console, UMPC, PMP, MID, BFG and any number of TLAs, some of which haven't been invented yet. It began life as a community project of sorts, headed by several prominent members of the GP32X.com community and funded by 4,000 pre-orderers. It's the spiritual successor to open handhelds such as the GP32 and GP2X, designed with community input to answer all the complaints of the systems that came before. Wasn't it coming out over a year ago? Why is it so late?
Shut up! That's why! This little device has survived production delays, bank meltdowns, angry mobs, natural disasters, vapourware trolls, other detractors who may have had valid points in hindsight but not today ok, and much more. Perhaps the biggest time factor though, was that it was designed and built from the ground up by a bunch of guys who'd never done it before. Turns out it's pretty difficult to build something like this with no experience, no corporate backing and no millions. Who'da thunk? But it's finally real, and it's shipping out to patient pre-orderers right now.
How do they expect to compete with Nintendo and Sony?
They don't. The Pandora is a niche device aimed at retro gamers, homebrew lovers, and anyone who likes open devices. It's expected to sell in the thousands, not millions. Not that they'll say no if a million people want one.
What's "open" about it?
Put simply, "open" means you can do what you want with it. Developers can write or port software and release it how they like (free, open source if they want, commercial is cool too). Users bask in the glory of all this, installing what they want without restrictions, without DRM, without tiresome rules or terms of service. It runs a completely open source operating system, which you're also free to hack, slash or just replace. And that's just the software. Want to tether to your phone or use a DualShock pad via Bluetooth? Go for it. Fancy plugging in a USB broadband modem, or HDD, or MIDI controller? Do it. Got a use for UART? It's at the rear expansion port. Want to add more buttons and lights? There are spare solder pads inside, go nuts.
I'm a gamer, not a hacker!
That's cool baby. A large portion of Pandora buyers are more interested in mashing buttons than making and modding things. It's a gaming handheld for gamers! It just so happens that you're allowed to hack it, if that's what blows your skirt up.
What about the Linux thing though? I don't know how to Linux.
That's ok, you don't need to! Countless hours have been spent customising the Pandora operating system (based on Ångström Linux) to make it as seamless and user friendly as possible. You can switch between several different GUIs, from a mobile-style icon grid to a fully fledged desktop environment which is as easy to use as Windows. The finger-friendly Ubuntu Netbook Launcher is even in there. Managing your installed software is extremely simple too, thanks to the specially developed "pnd" system. All apps are downloaded as a single .pnd file. Save it to your SD card and installation is complete - it automatically appears in your menu and it's ready to run. To uninstall, just delete the .pnd file. Linux isn't supposed to be this simple! It's a disgrace!
Yeah well, it's big and ugly.
Be fair now, it's not that big. It's only a touch bigger than the NDS Lite. As for looks, well, 4,000 people saw fit to throw their money down in advance, so it must be bringing sexy back for someone, right? (Yes!). If you're not quite seeing it, just think of that plain kid in high school who you never really noticed until you found out they had every kind of console and the keys to the liquor cabinet. Pretty enough now? Giggity.
Wait, $330? I can buy a PS3 for that!
Yes, you can. But when you buy a big brand console, you're only covering part of the manufacturing cost. These companies typically sell high volumes of hardware at a loss, and rely on software revenues to turn a profit. Open Pandora Ltd is a low volume manufacturer, and each sale needs to cover the cost of the hardware. Once you buy, the deal is done; they are not relying on you to buy software to make more money. This is good news for developers too - no SDK costs or licensing fees, just make your software and release it at your leisure.
Does the name have anything to do with the radio service, or the jewellery, or the PSP battery haxx, or those blue people, or the Greek mythology?

Can I buy one now?
Not at this moment. The first batch of 4,000 is currently being assembled and shipped. Once that's done (give it a month or so), pre-orders for the second batch will be opened. It is hoped that later batches will be manufactured in advance, and stocked by some web outlets.

Your mileage may vary, though - I switch between at least two (sometimes three) different types of keyboard during the day on a daily basis, so I did not find this difficult in the slightest. It's very much designed for thumb-typing, and it works very well for this. I foresee it being very useful for my written projects, as well as for quick notes. All of my keys respond nicely and evenly, and it's a pleasure to type with. Using the game controls as the arrow keys and Home/End/Page-up/Page-down keys is very intuitive, too.

Wow, that were some 1,5 weeks in Newcastle, building Pandoras - and meeting Craig and Fatih again after all these years. And Michael for the first time ever! Okay, and it wasn't hell - but I liked the sound of it, so I used it as blog title
(BTW: We hid a group picture somewhere...)
We had a lot of work to do. It took as a couple of days to setup everything, check out everything is okay and start building the units.
While it was A LOT of work, we also had some fun, listening to Planet Rock radio (and the ever-repeating Autoclass-commercial that really makes you go crazy if you hear it 20 times a day) while assembling the Pandoras, checking the boards for first reports on the units so we can react to anything that was going wrong as soon as possible - a wise decision, as this lead to us improving the building quality and quality checking more and more.
While the first units had some problems (you probably can see the reports on the boards - we had one with broken WiFi, a few with bad L and R buttons), we reacted immediately and improved the building process and the quality check for the rest.
We now check every single button, the controls, the touchscreen, WiFi and the speakers.
After figuring all these steps out, we managed to build 200 units within three days - which is quite a good quota as we were only three guys on that weekend (some people and community guys helped before (THANKS!), but not on that weekend.
So far, roughly 500 units have been delivered (or are on the way to the customers), while there are already some more finished and need to be tested. Of course, there are also some broken units which we need to check. If we can't fix them, they go back to Texas to be fixed. New boards are already on the way, so by the end of this week, we should probably have 700 - 800 units delivered!
That's the story so far - what about the future? When can YOU expect your Pandora?
As we now found a proper way to build the units and testing them, Craig hired a fixed team (three persons) to build the units - starting this week.
Craig will take care training them and testing the units, to keep the good quality.
The case itself is fine, it's not 100% perfect (well, I guess there is NO device which is 100% perfect), but there are no major flaws or problems. Therefore, we already ordered the next 3000 cases - this time (of course) without the painted buttons.
While we don't know yet when we'll get those cases (we'll make no guesstimates anymore with the chinese company), we're now ready to continue anytime!
And how were the receptions of the very first Pandoras?
Well, most of you followed the boards - receptions were very different. Most do love the device - but some are not content yet because there's not much software yet out there (for sure) and some have problems with their units (most of them got the very first units, that might have bad L/R buttons).
If you really have problems like hardware defects or completely unusable L/R-Buttons, feel free to contact us. We'll do anything to fix your unit.
So all in all we're pretty happy - more and more software if popping up (just got a version of the PSX emulator that is ready for a first release soon) and while most emulators aren't optimized yet, you can be sure a lot more wil happen. And the hardware turned out really good - and it's really nice reading how you guys like it and what you're already doing with it!
Thanks a lot to all you users who did bug reports - within the next days, Hotfix 2 will be ready for you which includes numerous small fixes!
And when will Batch 2 be ready?
Well, let us first finish Batch 1, okay? The lead time for electronic parts is terrible these days. We already ordered the parts for Batch 2, they will be ready in about September. Preordering will probably start within this month. The price will be a bit higher (we think about 349 USD), as we couldn't afford to build the unit otherwise, but we'll still try to keep it as low as possible for you.
We'll inform you here as soon as the preordering starts!

Caanoo is ook nieuw voor mij, jammer genoeg niet echt een verbetering dus. Ik vind het scherm juist wel goed van de wiz
Ik heb alleen het idee dat mijn vriend teleurgesteld is in hoeveel "meer" de Wiz kan in vergelijking tot de GP2X. Maar misschien is het een kwestie van wennen.

(de pandora heeft naast de cortexA8 processor een grafische chip (SGX) en een digital signal processor voor dingen als decoderen van muziek e.d. Ook kan de cortex A8 de instructieset NEON aan die dingen ook zou kunnen versnellen)
Maarr.. als het goed is hebben een aantal webwinkels ook pandora's besteld (zoals gpark.nl)
dus dan is het wel een kwestie van klikken en over een paar dagen in huis.
Alleen is dan de vraag wanneer de webwinkels aangeleverd worden (in welke batch zitten ze)

Ik dacht dat ze ongeveer op een fout van 3% zaten dat is dus 30 op de 1000 maar ze hebben de quality control behoorlijk verhoogd om defecte units er beter uit te pikken.

SPOILERToday, well yesterday the 11th of June was my birthday. I received my pandora #62 on wednesday before my birthday. I really liked the fact that I got it
But that was not all I already said it was my birthday so I had family over. Ive been bitching about this thing for 1,5 years so I might as well show them the unit. The reactions overwhelmed me people are so anthausiastic about this device its amazing. The brother of my girlfriend was the first one I met in the train (about an hour travel) I showed him pandorapanic and he was imediatly hooked (he got a score of 14 that I didnt beat yet) so I started showing him some stuff the pandora can do and he really liked it. Next up my brother in law who was very anthausiastic about the hardware even before he saw it, he makes electrical cirquit for a living so he was following small bit of the project already, he really like the unit and especially the potentian it has. The next person was my brother a real rally fanatic and rally game fanatic and it more or less started for him game-wise with colin mcrea rally I showed him it worked fine in PSX4pandora and he played it for at least 20 minutes and he was glowing more and more, he mentioned 'I should get one of these the screen is so clear' Then came my sitster in law she was stunned by it she literally said 'I dont know what to do with it but I want one!
Conclusions from my side: The build quality is very good, the dpad an action buttons are superb!, the nubs feel very natual to me (but my family prefered the stylus), the software side of things is also very intuitive and free. I like it more than a closed down OS where you cannot experiment. Software is soooooo nice I almost feel the effort put into it. Playing pandora panic really makes me smile being in the games makes think of devs like makoez and pokeparadox. This piece of kit is definetly a stayer.
The only downside is a non working volume wheel so I will return it tommorow, I dont want to let it go but I have to. I hope Ill get it back repaired as soon as possible because even if I have owned the pandor a for only 3 days I can not imagine a train trip without it.

Dat zijn dus 3 wachtrijen. Dan is het de vraag of ze echt kijken wie er het eerst heeft besteld, of dat een wachtrij voorrrang krijgt.

As promised, here is our current report about things that happened and things that will happen.
First, let's start with the most important information for most of you:
How is Mass Production going?
Well, I'm honest here: Could be better - but could've been A LOT worse.
All in all, we're pretty content. And a bit proud it all worked out and there are now real units out there! We can either speed up production but have a bad quality - or work a but slower and make sure the units we deliver are properly working (and that's the path we chose).
There were a few issues we had to solve - but that's normal for a first batch. And it's nothing serious - thank god!
Here is a quick list:
* Shoulderbuttons: The first units had been assembled as fast as possible - without taking much time to optimize the shoulder buttons as good as possible. Ever since we saw the first complaints about them, we take more time. And they are working good now, so... issue fixed.
* LCD-Cables: Quite a few LCD cables failed after assembly. A few ones failed after delivery. This was a bit puzzling - but we found the issue: Spikey solder blobs on the speaker cables killed the LCD cable when closing the lid. Fix for now: Be more careful while soldering them. Fix for Batch 2: Move the solder points beneath the LCD cable. Since we know about this, no LCD cables failed anymore. Issue fixed
* Nubs: This is some weird thing. We had quite a few broken ones which had been send to customers who didn't care. Some were fixable. We have fix for now: We got 14.000 nubs, more than enough for 4000 boards. Michael set up a device to test the nubs before soldering them in. The good ones will be sent to the MP company in Texas to be used in the boards, the bad ones back to the nub production company. They need to figure out what's wrong with them. Still, as we have more than enough nubs for the boards, this issue is basically fixed for the first batch.
* Sound: On some units, the sound was scratching quite often. After I got hold of such a unit and sent it to notaz, he found it was a software bug. The next HotFix will have that one included... so, issue fixed
* Boards: On the first batch, quite a few boards came broken from the mass production company. Some problems were apparent (parts missing, sometimes even big ones like the powerswitch), some only occured after testing each functions. This was kind of a bummer - since the boards had been tested there... That did cost us a lot of time, as we were not expecting broken boards - and therefore built a lot of units just to find out they have issues when testing them. It also costs time and money, since those boards need to go back to be fixed. We told the company to test them better - and the last 200 boards we got were way better and more reliable. So yes, issue seems to be fixed.
Basically, all problems have been fixed so far. This slowed things down at the beginning - but a two-man team can now assemble 50 Pandoras in an 8-hour-day including quality testing. As Craig has a four-man team, 100 Pandoras could be built per day (as long as we have the boards and cases ready)
And of course - if you have any hardware problems with your Pandora, they will be fixed for free!
So far, about 600 Pandoras have been built and delivered (or are will be delivered next week) About 100 had some issues we need to check. This might be broken LCD cables but fine boards, broken boards that need to go back to Texas, etc.
Production was slow but steady until now, but speed has continually increased while maintaining the quality control. The MP company is also working to make production of the boards more reliable - not only to please us: They only get the money for working boards, so broken boards need to be fixed by them for free, and that's something they surely try to avoid.
All in all, we're pretty content it worked out that well. We feared the worst, but it turned out to work out pretty well. Very few RMAs so far, a lot of very happy users on the boards.
The Cases
Except for the painted buttons, the cases were fine, so there was no need to not continue the mass production. In fact, we already ordered the next ones weeks ago. I can't give you an update though, as Fatih is currently on a well-deserved honeymoon (yep, he got married just after the Pandora production began) and therefore is not online. He's still in regular contact with the chinese company to ensure they are working on it.
I'll have more information once he's back to work.
The software - and future development
Since quite a few developers already received their Pandoras, there's currently a lot going on in OS / Software development for the Pandora.
There's currently being a list setup on the Wiki which includes a To-Do list and what the status is on some issues. Also, if you as a user have feature requests or want to help out, be sure to post that on the official bugtracker.
If you want to help out as developer: We're just organizing everything (IRC, GIT, etc.) and will let you know here when everything is setup!
Finally, quite a few fixes are coming up with the next HotFix (probably within the next days).
New things that will be included (already done):
* U-Boot: Enable serial output on USB (which is really helpful if you want to create your own OS for the Pandora or port Debian, ArchMobile, Gentoo, etc.)
* Kernel: Fixed some ALSA stuff (less buffer underruns, fixed broken sounds on some units)
* SD-Card mount: SD Cards now only use mmcblk* if they have no label (name). As soon as you label them, the label is used for mountpoints (which fixes some issues if emulators / apps remember the last used directory and you put the card into a different SD card slot)
* SD-Card mount: Now using dirsync with 2 sec buffer flush instead of sync. Speeds up SD Card write speed A LOT (from 220KB/s to 5,6MB/s!)
* Startup Settings: You can now disable and enable startup services (like Samba, USB-Network, etc.). This can help you increase the boot speed and performance
New things that will probably be included (working on them):
* Enable Mass Storage access for Pandora SD Cards (so you can use the Pandora as Card Reader)
* Modify Alsa config so that you can use Bluetooth headsets (I can now test that since some community member sent me a headset - THANKS!
* Create a script to tweak settings (like LCD Refresh rate, SD Buffer flush, etc.)
* ... some other things I can't remember right now
Mass production becoming better each day, more and more units delivered, software development optimized and a new fixes done every day... things are really looking good

Nu ik dus 2 pandora's heb gezien moet ik zeggen dat ze kwa hardware er beiden erg goed uitzagen. De D-Pad is echt super op mijn nieuwe unit zit een a knop die iets minder voelt maar niet irritant of zo hij is iets squishier dan de andere 3 maar desondanks erg fijne knoppen. De schouder knoppen zijn ook van deze unit weer goed. Verder ben ik helemaal weg van de nubs
ze werken een beetje als die oude trackpoints die wel eens op laptops zaten maar dan met meer travel ze zijn erg gevoelig maar dat mag ik wel (de nubs blijven zichzelf configureren tijden het gebruik dus begin ik mijn pandora sessies altijd even met een calibratitieje nubs even naar de uitersten duwen) De linker nub gebruik ik als muis en de rechter als muisknoppen (link is links klik rechts is rechts klink en naar boven is dubbel klik) De touchscreen is er precies zels alle kleine knopjes en dingetjes zijn direct raak. Al moet ik zeggen dat ik voor rechts klikken vaker de nub pak (rechts klikken met touch is langer vasthouden). Ook zijn de game knoppen voor gewoon gebruik fijn gemapt, de rechter schouderknop in combinatie met muis sleept windows zonder ze bovenaan vast te hoeven pakken (erg fijn op zo'n klein scherm) en de game knoppen zijn gemapt op end, home, page down en page up super voor webbrowsen wat kan ik nog meer over de hardware zeggen de scharnier vind ik prima voor gebruik onderweg klap ik het scherm helemaal open en dan klikt hij vast, maar ook voor films blijft hij gewoon in de gewenste stand staan. Het geluid is ook goed de speakertjes zijn wat je kunt verwachten van kleine speakertjes niet super goed vooral niet in het bas gebied maar ze gaan redelijk hard en met een koptelefoon klinkt het helemaal super.De software kant is volop in ontwikkeling en toch vind ik het al super prettig, de gewindowde linux omgeving doet erg natuurlijk aan voor mensen die veel computeren, en ook het minimenu loopt fijn. Maar wat ik toch echt wel het kunststukje vind van de pandora (vooral nadat ik een andere heb gekregen) is het PND systeem. Het PND systeem is een heel makkelijk systeem je maakt op je SD kaart 2 mapjes aan pandora/menu en pandora/desktop dan download je pnd bestanden met software en zet je in menu om ze in het menu te laten verschijnen en in desktop om ze op de desktop te laten verschijnen. Als je nu je SD kaart erin stopt verschijnen de programma's op de desgewenste plek. Maar dat is nog niet alles de programma's zelf maken dan nog een directory aan in pandora/appdata en schrijven daar hun data.
Klinkt allemaal vrij logisch maar wat het in de praktijk inhoud is echt heel erg fijn. Ik heb nou 2 weken geen pandora gehad en kreeg een nieuwe dus, ik stop mijn SD kaart in de pandora en ik heb gelijk alle instellingen van alle programmas. Dus de muziek speler wist waar ik mijn muziek had staan en bij welk nummer hij was, ik had nog savestates en highscores van spelletjes etc etc. Dit betekent dat als er straks nieuwe firmware is je de SD kaart erin kunt stoppen en je dan klaar bent en niet dat je dan nog weer savestates op moet gaan zoeken of instellingen aanpassen.

Audio inputs use McBSP4 and audio outputs use McBSP2 so they can run simultaneously with different audio on them. BT is on McBSP3 for reference.
The audio output of the TPS65950 is not connected on the PCB but I read in the TRM it might be possible to route it out of the USB OTG port for four channel audio (six channel if you stream over BT too). That might take some clever coding to hack into the kernel, but neat if it works some day. I could be wrong about it working like this, but I found information in that carkit section for USB.

De one-nub-club is niet zo one-nub trouwens
Mensen konden vooraan in de wachtrij komen te staan als ze een one-nub versie bestelden (een van de nubs was dan defect).
Alleen de meeste mensen die de one-nub versie hebben binnen gekregen hoefden alleen of de nubs te calibreren, of lucht in de kapotte nub te blazen. Zodra dat was gedaan deed hij het 9 van de 10 weer

Just a short summary so far:
About 650 - 700 should've been shipped (alltogether) - or will be shipped these days (as I'm shipping some more today).
There were a couple of things that slowed things down in the beginning:
* Lots of failed LCD Cables in the beginning after we assembled the lid. As we had all 4000 cables here, it didn't prevent us to build the units... but it took a lot more time. As we now know what the problem was, this will be no slowdown anymore (last 200 lids we built only had one failed LCD cable
* Quite a few boards from the first few hundred units failed and had to go back for repairment to Texas. The quota for the last 200 was WAY better (only a couple ones broken), so the company is working on it. As testing these boards and having quite a few failures was time consuming... yeah, another one of those issues solved.
* The case was fine, but the L/R Buttons were painted, so they didn't fit. We needed to manually drill and file them to make them work (you can't drill exactly in the center, so you need to manually file and test them...) This was REALLY time consuming - took up to 1 - 8 minutes (varying) per unit! As the next 3000 buttons will not be painted, this issue is also solved.
* As you could see on the "one-nub"-Thread, a lot of nubs had problems. We shipped them back to the company that produced them and they found the problem (it was a tolerance problem). As it was their fault, they apologized a dozen times and are now testing each one of them and repair the broken ones for free. Since most nubs are fine and only a few need to be fixed, this should work out pretty fast. Another issue solved.
Two persons could build 50 units a day - even with doing all these manual labour and quality check.
But until we figured out what went wrong, this took a lot of testing and time.
As all these issues are solved, production should go way faster in the future.
There are a couple hundred boards already produced, just waiting for the nubs to be soldered to them (which doesn't take long).
There are about 250 cases left to build the units - the next 3000 are either in production or already finished.
So once the first batch of checked nubs arrive at the company in Texas (hopefully, this week), production should start and continue way faster.
Welcome to a first run - where lots of problems can occur. Thankfully, none of them were serious and all of them have already been taken care of.

Verder ben ik nog te lui om de data voor spellen als quake I,II en III, comander keen, warcraft 2, baldurs gate op te zoeken zodat ik die met de open engines kan spelen maar dat komt nog wel

Ik zou toch eerder gaan voor xbmc op de pandora, deze draait veel soepeler, en speelt veel meer mediasoorten af (ik bedoel zonder iets zelf in te stellen). Zeker als je toch niets opneemt van TV, dan zou ik gaan voor xbmc.
Ik zie dat je al iets gaat proberen met cifs in fstab? Ik heb ook zoiets staan in mijn mediacenter, zal het later even voor je opzoeken (moet nu naar mijn werk

There is a lot happening now to make things much better in the future in terms of production speed and software.
I know some of you would just have us 'build, build, build' but the whole project has been based on being very cautious and getting things as right as possible (measure twice, cut once), and the reason we are still here is because we are so cautious - we want to look after the Pandora project and make sure it's still here for many years to come.
Oh and the first 1000 will have shipped by the end of next week, or at least be finished and be shipping by the end of next week.

Het verschil tussen pandora #61 en pandora #135 die ik allebei gehad heb geeft me vertrouwen in het feit dat ze alleen maar beter worden. Het is ook een leer proces voor OPT
Verder gerbuik ik hem dagelijks minimaal 5 uur en is hij zn geld meer dan waard geweest. Kort gezegd, deze week worden niet de rest van de Pandora's (400) gemaakt en geshipped, dat gebeurd volgende week. Alles staat dan wel klaar om ze zo snel mogelijk te bouwen (5 min. per pandora ipv 17). Zo kunnen ze dadelijk 200 pandora's bouwen per dag.

This may not be the Pandora news you’re all waiting for. But for me, it’s an important event, so I thought it will fit in the devblog here as well.
I’m currently on a short vacation. Only for four days… but it’s the first vacation I have since we started the whole project… and boy, this has been a loooong time.
And I guess I really needed it. I didn’t think it was that bad, but it looks like I was totally exhausted.
There were so many things I wanted to do during the last few weeks: Finish up Hotfix 4, update the website with more information for developers, write blog posts about what’s happening, do Tutorial videos, etc.
Every night I wanted to do it… but I couldn’t. Either I just browsed the web because I really wasn’t in the mood or I just fell asleep in front of my PC. I was totally out of strength and I was down – and I’m usually one of the guys who’s almost always happy
I just spent a whole day in Mallorca at the beach – and I’m already feeling my strength coming back to me. I worked on more things for the Hotfix – directly on my Pandora, and I’m finally having fun again doing that!
I can feel how life is flowing back into me. A few more days, and I’m ready again! Ready to solder thousands of LCD cables. Ready to face all problems we may encounter!
I also learnt something else: There’s more in life than a Pandora. A lot more. Yes, the nubs caused a bit of a delay and we don’t know when production will finally speed up… so what?
The Pandora won’t be a worse device because of that.
The board manufacturer as well as the nub company are working together to solve that issue. I’m sure they will find a fix – and once that’s done… everything will should speed up!
I’d rather wait one or two weeks longer and have a proper solution, than shipping out as fast as we can and getting back tons of Pandoras because the nubs break.
Everyone who’s desperately waiting for the Pandora now and starts to shout and cry because it takes a few weeks more: Get a break! It really helped me. And it helped Gruso (a long-term and nice member of gp32x.com), too.
It’s really relaxing – and suddenly you realize: The Pandora really is a unique and cool device. And it will still be unique and cool when you get it. You can still play emulators and native games. You can still surf the web with FireFox or Chromium. It will still be open.
Well, so much for day one here directly from my hotel room.
Maybe I’ll write some more tomorrow.
And when I’m back next Wednesday, I’m most probably back with full strength – doing all the things I wanted to do weeks ago. And give you more real updates about where the rest of the Pandoras are.
Last but not least, I took a little picture at the beach. Nothing special, but fans of classic games might smile a bit

A little update on production progress, which has been tiptoeing along since 100 more boards arrived last week. Quality checks on the nubs are still a significant slowdown, although it looks like things could be possibly thinking about looking up soon.
The last 25 of the 100 will ship today and tomorrow. It does look like this nub issue is solved for 99% of the units so we can get back on track. Over 700 Pandoras have now been shipped.

I know things are going slow but 170 more boards are arriving soon and things will start to really speed up and those units should be very good quality due to this lengthy test process.

we decided to order 7000 last month. 1500 are coming by UPS the rest by boat (4-5 weeks).

Sometimes EvilDragon says a bit, and other times he says a lot. This is one of those times where he must have spent his night up, making a post.
Let’s see… The current nubs are working great, the latest hotfix is looking pretty good. The team is very happy with the last hundred boards, and there and many more on the way. What more is there to say?

Hardware Production
We were really pleased with the last 100 boards! Only a few failed for different reasons, but the nubs were working fine! So it seems the mechanical testing is a fine solution until the next batch of nubs will be produced with added accuracy.
170 more boards are already on the way to UK, so expect more units to be delivered soon.
Hopefully, now that the nub problem seems to be sold, the production will speed soon! As usual, we’re working on getting there!
The next 4000 cases should also be ready soon – all of them have been produced and most of them are already painted. They should just arrive in time when we are passing the first 1000 units mark!
Software updates
Softwarewise, some nice things have happened: With Ginge (which should be ready for release soon), you can play GP2X games (even commercial games like Payback and Wind & Water) on the Pandora! While it still is work in progress, it already has pretty good compatibility. Thanks to notaz for that incredible piece of software work.
Also, Hotfix 4 Beta 1 is out. Thanks to the guys that tried it, I already fixed a few errors and will release a Beta 2 within the next days.
The biggest improvement is probably that HF4 is using IPKs for the update: This is the first major step to properly upgrade the system, via a package manager.
Another test I did worked fine: I installed the very first OS version on my Pandora, changed the config files to use our feeds and upgraded the system using opkg update and opkg upgrade – and 10 minutes later, I had a working up-to-date OS on my system!
Soon you will be able to update your unit by either downloading the latest HotFix and running it or by directly update the Pandora while connected to the internet.
The brave ones among you will also be able to use unstable feeds to get the latest changes to the system a few minutes after they have been committed! Of course, bug reports are welcome.
Help us improve the unit!
So, all in all, while things are not going perfect, we’re still moving forward and getting there.
Basically, I could be happy with that – but there is one thing that makes me sad: And that is the current mood on the boards. There are some people who seem to try to bash the unit for whatever reason.
This is really demotivating and won’t help anyone get anywhere – since it’s no constructive criticism.
Yes, we know there have been some problems with the first produced units like shoulder buttons, nubs, LCD cables. And we are working hard to get them all fixed (and most seem already be fixed).
Yes, we know there have been slowdowns in the production – mainly because we had problems with the nubs (we couldn’t magically fix them, this takes some time).
Please don’t forget: We are not a big company, we are just some guys trying to achieve something. Something major – and I think we didn’t do too bad so far.
We are NOT trying to cover or deny any faults, but are trying to fix and prevent them in the future.
According to most people we talked to who already received the unit: They love it and think it’s the best device they ever owned.
So far, we only had about 50 RMAs out of 700 – while the boards currently make it sound as if almost EVERY unit is unusable.
Some people do claim that there are more broken units but the users do not want to ship it back to us since they are waiting for production to speed up.
I can imagine this might be true for some people, but not for all.
Please: Even if you do not want to return your unit right now, let us know if you have any serious issues like a dead nub or a failed LCD cable or anything else.
Why? Well, we’re trying to fix all problems and prevent them from happening. But if we DON’T KNOW about these issues, we can’t fix them. Telling us what fails will help us to improve the quality and increase the production speed.
Also, of course, if you have a Pandora and like it – spread the word! Show it to friends, colleagues, post on boards. Tell them the story behind it, that it’s a device made by a small company, not by Sony, etc.
One thing you can be sure about:
If you encounter any real problems with your unit, we’ll fix it for you! AND use the information to improve further produced units!
Let’s all work together to improve the mood at the boards again. We all do share something: The love for niche products. Be it for gaming, for hacking, for coding – we all gathered to make the Pandora happen. For some, the Pandora is already reality – and for the rest, this reality is coming closer and closer!

Goed nieuws is dat er nieuwe pandora's op komst zijn, het nub probleem is opgelost en ook het LCD kabel probleem. Dat betekent dat er volgende week 350 pandoras komen met nieuwe nubs en hopelijk blijft dan de productie gewoon doorlopen. (en er is gisteren een nieuwe veel betere PSX emulator gereleased
)Ik hoop dat iedereen die er nog niet één heeft maar wel besteld hem snel heeft.

De mensen achter het project zijn ook best wel op heb ik het idee ED en Craig zijn allebij ziekig de laatste paar weken en echt positief zijn ze niet meer maar ze laten het er niet bij zitten. Ze klinken gewoon erg verslagen omdat het allemaal 3rd party werk is, het designen van deze handheld was verder een groot succes. De software kant loopt redelijk maar omdat er niet zoveel units zijn ook niet echt heel erg hard (ze halen toch wel gemiddeld 1 á 2 programmas per dag) maar de echt spectaculaire dingen moeten denk ik nog kopen. Als ze het gaat lukken zo'n 300 pandora's per week te maken dan kan het in een stroom versnelling komen.
De enige klachten die ik over pandora's heb gehoord zijn een beetje in de trant van punnik, namelijk dat het niet zo spannend is en dat hij dan in hoek beland. Maar dat is een kleine minderheid.

En men is druk aan het porten. Voor mensen die de humble indie bundle hebben gekocht, gish is nu ook naar de pandora geport. Dat is dan feitelijk de eerste commerciele titelZe gaan deze week 550 pandora's versturen, en het lijkt erop dat de hele eerste batch deze maand eruit kan en de volgende batch in de maanden erna, hopelijk krijgen de heren eindelijk de productie op gang, er blijft nogsteeds genoeg vraag naar de pandora heb ik het idee.
Deze zijn de terug gestuurde pandoras die gerepareerd zijn. (als bijvoorbeeld de mijne daar tussen zit daar was niks mis mee op de LCD kabel na, met een andere LCD kabel zou ik hem zelf graag terug hebben dus misschien kunnen ze anderen daar blij mee maken)
Ja op het phone gedeelte na er zit dus geen sim kaart in. Verder draait het gewoon linux en dus niet een apple OS oid. Maar er zijn wel veel mensen die iphone software maken die de pandora een verademing vinden qua openheid.quote:

Heb je trouwens van die browsers wel de nieuwste versies gebruikt want daar zijn oude versies van die op het NAND geheugen schreven. Als dat zo is moet je de chaches van die 2 browsers leegmaken en nog eens proberen. (om snel te kijken hoe vol je NAND is gebruik het commando df -h in de terminal)
Ik kan je sowieso aanraden om van alle software de nieuwste versie te downloaden, er is veel gebeurt op software gebied in dat half jaar dat de pandora nu uit is. Vooral de nieuwe PCSX-ReArmed is veel beter dan psx4pandora

Ik blijf het nieuws volgen over de pandora. Maar ik weet nog steeds niet wat ik doe
Ik wil in ieder geval straks een 3DS halen, en die nieuwe PSP2 ziet er ook vreselijk tof uit. Vooral die laatste heeft heel veel homebrew-potentieel

Ik moet zeggen dat ik eerst over deze move van openpandora ltd. verbaasd was maar na veel uitleg snap ik het wel van ze. Helaas gaat dit waarschijnlijk voor batch 3 ook de prijs worden, de oude pre-order prijs hebben ze duidelijk te laag ingeschat. Het is wel tof dat ze er nu ongeveer 150 per dag kunnen maken en dus ook gaan beginnen aan het maken van een voorraad. Softwarematig is er echt een vooruitgang, en ik merk nu meer mensen een pandora hebben het nog harder gaat!
Laatste nieuws is een port van red alert
en zoals ik eerder al melde gish ik hoop op meer van die leuke indie titels.Ik ben nogsteed vervent voorstander van de pandora zoals je leest, ik denk toch voor linux minded mensen met een portable gaming interesse dit de ultieme machine is (die je nu kunt krijgen) Als je dan ook nog van retro houd is het helemaal af

Dat zijn dus pandora's die binnen 7 dagen opgestuurd worden (voor mensen die niet willen wachten) er zijn inmiddels al een heel setje van deze pandora's opgestuurd en voor de meeste mensen werd het de volgende dag nog opgestuurd.
