Metalheads Unite!!!
quote:
Amidst a sea of mediocre releases from bands no one will care about in a year or so, a true gem stays afloat. Once again, Cynic demonstrates that, even when they're being "soft", they can still write better songs than your favorite band.
Retraced features remixed versions of some of the songs from 2008's Traced In Air, as well as a new, unreleased song. The songs are more tame than their previous versions, but they still have the beauty and complexity that you would expect if you're a fan of the band. They have a somewhat "industrial" sound, although it's not too harsh. They're somewhat closer to Nine Inch Nails' less harsh songs, but Nine Inch nails is terrible, and Cynic rules the Universe, so let's forget that I even mentioned them in the same sentence. For those who hate Paul Masvidal's "robot voice", he's not overdoing it on the EP, so you can finally pay attention and fully appreciate his soothing voice. The feel of songs like Evolutionary Sleeper and Integral Birth has been somewhat enhanced by the "industrial-acoustic" approach, which can be appreciated even more when listening through a good pair of headphones. It's like discovering the gentler side of The Hulk: it's still a beast, but now you know he's capable of doing more than destroying everything on his path.
The unreleased song, Wheels Within Wheels, easily fits among Cynic's best songs to date. It is a little less Death Metal and more Progressive/Fusion, but it still has a heavy feel to it, which is very important for a band that changed the way Death Metal was made back when you were still calling your mom to help you wipe your ass. It also features one of the most beautiful melodies I've listened this year.
If you're into Cynic, you already got your hands on this EP. If you don't know who are they, you should start paying attention and learn a thing or two.
