Tens of thousands of airline passengers face travel chaos today after volcanic ash from an eruption in Iceland has forced three airports to shut and brought heavy disruption to others.
Airports in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow were shut this morning and five easyJet flights that were due to take off from Stansted were ground due to massive visibility problems.
At Gatwick, 106 flights were cancelled with heavy disruptions expected to follow later today. All flights from Manchester airport have been disrupted.
Newcastle and Belfast are also affected, according to reports, as is Birmingham airport.
A huge ash mushroom across major British flight paths threatens to turn thousands of families returning from Easter holiday into a nightmare.
Business travellers hoping to leave London from City Airport tonight also reported that British Airways had cancelled flights.
Airports have urged travellers to check with their relevent airlines to see whether flights have been effected.
“Following advice from the Met Office, the National Air Traffic Service (NATS) has introduced restrictions to UK airspace this morning as a result of volcanic ash drifting across the United Kingdom from Iceland,” a spokeswoman for Stansted Airport said.
“These measures currently affect Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports which are closed but may also affect other parts of the UK later today,” she said.
After bringing chaos to UK airports, the ash cloud is expected to spread into continental Europe overnight, wrecking holidaymakers’ chances of reaching many international destinations.
A spokesman from NATS said: “The Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre has issued a forecast that the ash cloud from the volcanic eruption in Iceland will track over Europe tonight.
“NATS is working with Eurocontrol and our colleagues in Europe’s other air navigation service providers to take the appropriate action to ensure safety in accordance with international aviation policy.”
The ash cloud is caused by the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which surged back into life on Tuesday after apparently showing signs of dying down.
It follows eruptions last month in a 1.2 mile wide strip on the flank of the volcano where there is no ice.

Volcanologist Haraldur Sigurdsson said there is a risk of a phreatic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull glacier in south Iceland, which occurs when magma makes contact with water. The crater at the glacier’s summit is filled with ice which is starting to melt.
“There have been indications for two to three months that the main movement of magma is straight underneath the summit crater at a significant depth,” Sigurdsson told mbl.is.
He said the crater is quite large, approximately five kilometers in diameter. Now the ice inside it is starting to melt as magma is flowing underneath the ice. “When it melts its way through there is a risk of a phreatic eruption.”

De aswolk trekt in zuidoostelijke richting. Daardoor kan kan ook het Nederlandse luchtruim verstoord worden en komt ook het luchtverkeer van en naar Schiphol plat te liggen.
De belangrijke internationale luchthavens van Stockholm en Gotenburg liggen volgens de autoriteiten vooralsnog buiten de gevarenzone van de aswolk. In het noorden van Zweden is het vliegverkeer wel ontregeld.
As van vulkanen kan ertoe leiden dat vliegtuigmotoren plotseling stilvallen. Dat gebeurde in 1989 met een vliegtuig van KLM, dat onderweg was van Schiphol naar Tokio.
Bij Alaska vloog het toestel door een wolk van de vulkaan Mount Redoubt. Het stof verstopte de vier motoren, die ineens uitvielen. De bemanning slaagde erin de motoren te herstarten. (ANP/CBR)

Je wilt die asdeeltjes liever niet in je motoren hebben. In het verleden zijn een KLM en BA vlucht al eens door een aswolk gevlogen, met als gevolg was dat alle motoren stopten. Ik heb ook gen idee hoe dat dan moet, lijkt me niet dat er vliegtuigen door de as gaan vliegen en ook niet dat het luchtvaartverkeer zo lang stil kan staan.

Ik heb ook gen idee hoe dat dan moet, lijkt me niet dat er vliegtuigen door de as gaan vliegen en ook niet dat het luchtvaartverkeer zo lang stil kan staan.
Is het niet dat het gewoon nog een lange tijd kan napruttelen met misschien zo nu en dan een piek?
