Bronquote:Japanese newspaper Nikkei reports new details about the 3DS. While still unconfirmed by Nintendo, the system will apparently use a "3-D joystick" and will feature a "force feedback mechanism that will let players feel the collisions of a game character." An accelerometer to allow tilt functionality is also still under consideration.
The paper also says the 3DS will have "significant improvements in wireless communications speed and battery life," and notes the dual screens will not be larger than 4 inches each.

quote:3DS dev hardware images sighted?
Nintendo appears to be testing a new DS - very likely the 3DS - with the US Federal Communications Commission. Images of the testing, seemingly now removed from the FCC filing, showed what is referred to as a "Nintendo CTR Target Board". The company's aim with this deposition was seemingly to get the Wi-Fi card used by the system approved for use in the USA.
So what is this board exactly, and what does it tell us? The only image we have was initially posted at the end of last month by WirelessGoodness, and brought to our attention by reader Daniele Brigliadori, and can be seen below. It looks like a Nintendo DS test kit or development station stripped down to the motherboard. As the testing was all about the Wi-Fi card, its components have been highlighted in the FCC's images.
WirelessGoodness surmised that it may be a new iteration of DS, or it could simply be a test board submitted by Nintendo to get approval for the inclusion of a new Wi-Fi card for the existing model. However, the twin screen arrangement on this system is unlike anything seen in any current DS system. All DS systems released to date feature dual 4:3 screens, but what we are clearly seeing here is a widescreen display paired with the more traditional display.
If this is the new Nintendo 3DS in test kit form, it suggests that the system retains its unique dual-screen set-up, but that only one of the displays features Sharp's auto-stereoscopic 3D tech, with the second, lower screen running without the 3D functionality. It's a shame that the only photograph we have is low-resolution, making in-depth examination of the setup of the board all but impossible. However, we do see the inclusion of stereo speakers, a slot for DS cartridges plus the usual SD card port too - standard for the normal DS of course, but expected for the new hardware any way.
Perhaps the biggest tell, however, is the codename: CTR. Each of the Nintendo hardware revisions for the DS has been given such a three-letter codename. The Nintendo DSi is referred to internally as TWL, while its jumbo counterpart, the DSi XL, is known as UTL. The CTR designation hasn't been used before, which along with the screen configuration suggests a brand new kind of Nintendo DS.
With the firm extremely unlikely to launch a new iteration of the existing hardware with the 3DS just around the corner, it does strongly suggest that this is indeed development hardware strongly connected to a new platform.

Nintendo 3DS Going Widescreen? An FCC filing submitted by Nintendo and Mitsumi, an electronics manufacturer, seems to be for the new Nintendo 3DS handheld. There's not much to it, but what there is should give hope to fans of widescreen gaming on the go.
That pic above there is most likely a testbed for the Nintendo 3DS. Since the FCC report it turned up in is for its wi-fi system, there's no information on the inner workings of the handheld itself, but as you can see, while most of the board is a mess of prototype components, those two screens stand out clear as day.
The bottom one appears similar to the existing bottom screen on the Nintendo DS. A regular aspect ratio, lighter and looking slightly "spongier" thanks ot its touch screen interface. But get a look at the top screen! It's widescreen. Before you go jumping to too many conclusions, know that this is prototype hardware, so it's not what you're going to see in the final production model. It doesn't take an industrial design student to work out that, if the top screen in this case is widescreen, then when the 3DS ships the bottom screen will probably be widescreen as well.
As for the rest, while it's tempting to spot an analogue stick, be warned that this picture is as hi-res as it gets, so it's tough telling what most of those components actually are (aside from the obvious bits like the screens and speakers). Oh, and one more interesting thing: buried in the FCC reports is a request by Nintendo that the guts of the handheld not be made public for a time period of 180 days, dating from April 2010. That timeframe would expire just before the Christmas shopping season...

quote:Nintendo 3DS Speed Will Be "Close To" PS3 and Xbox 360's...Apparently
Speed has been one of the oft-talked about points of the upcoming 3DS, but according to "several developers" who spoke to IGN, it'll have processing speeds similar to that of the PS3 and Xbox 360.
IGN said they've heard the speed of the 3DS will "far exceed the Nintendo Wii," which runs on an IBM Broadway 90nm SOI CMOS processor, clocked at 729MHz. The 3DS has been rumored to include an NVIDIA Tegra chip, but IGN's developer sources have told the website those rumors are actually false.
Anyone else get the feeling these 3DS rumormongerers are just throwing any old much-hoped-for spec at the launch, hoping something will stick?
