In de bekende Inca-stad Machu Picchu zitten 1.900 toersiten vast doordat modderstromen de spoorlijn naar de stad blokkeren. Dat is dinsdag vernomen uit officiële bron.

Machu Picchu ligt tussen de steile toppen van het Andesgebergte, op een hoogte van meer dan 2.400 meter. De trein is het enige transportmiddel van de stad Cuzco naar het laatste stuk van de ruïnes. De regering heeft vier helikopters van het leger en twee privéhelikopters ter beschikking gesteld om de Europese, Latijns-Amerikaanse en Noord-Amerikaanse toeristen te evacueren. Maandag konden slechts 70 toeristen geëvacueerd worden.

LIMA, Peru -- A mudslide on the famed Inca trail to Machu Picchu killed an Argentine tourist and a Peruvian guide Tuesday, as authorities evacuated dozens of tourists by helicopter from a flood zone where nearly 2,000 more were still stranded.

Cuzco government spokesman Hernet Moscoso said the Argentine, identified as Lucia Ramallo, 23, and the guide, Washington Huaraya, were in their tents when a slope gave way and their tents were crushed. Three other tourists were injured.

The Inca trail is a popular tourist trek that follows a stone path built by the ancient civilization from their capital, Cuzco, to the Machu Picchu citadel.

The deaths raised to five the number of people killed by heavy rains that have unleashed floods and landslides and collapsed homes, Moscoso said.

Civil Defense reported that 61 travelers - the sick, the elderly and minors - were flown by government helicopter on Monday from the village of Machu Picchu Pueblo near the citadel.

Another six flights made the trip on Tuesday, said Machu Picchu village spokesman Ruben Baldeon. There was no immediate word on how many people were evacuated.

Five days of torrential rains in the Cuzco region have destroyed bridges, 250 houses and hundreds of acres (hectares) of crops, while blocking highways and the railway to Machu Picchu.

Rail operator Perurail suspended service on Sunday due to mudslides and the flooding of the Urubamba River. The train is the only means of transportation on the last leg of the trip from Cuzco to the ruins.

In Peru moeten betere weersomstandigheden ervoor zorgen dat de twaalf Belgen die al sinds zondag vastzitten in Machu Picchu, in de loop van vandaag geëvacueerd kunnen worden. Dat meldt Bart Ouvry, woordvoerder van Buitenlandse Zaken. De Belgen zijn samen met veel andere toeristen vast komen te zitten doordat modderstromen en grondverschuivingen veroorzaakt door hevige regenval de spoorlijn naar Machu Picchu heeft geblokkeerd.

Gisteren werden 1.402 toeristen via een luchtbrug geëvacueerd", zo zegt Martin Perez, de Peruaanse minister van Toerisme. Dankzij het betere weer kon gedurende een periode van elf uur maar liefst 93 vluchten uitgevoerd worden. Volgens de autoriteiten wachten nu nog 800 toeristen op hun evcuatie.

"Als het weer aan onze kant staat, beginnen we vrijdagmiddag vanaf 12 uur aan de evacuaties", aldus Perez. Volgens lokale weerberichten zal de bewolking beperkt blijven, hierdoor kunnen de twaalf gemobiliseerde helikopters, waaronder vier Amerikaanse toestellen, waarschijnlijk opstijgen.

Zeven doden
Zeven mensen zijn omgekomen door de felle stormen die de regio sinds zondag teisteren. Rivieren zijn buiten hun oevers getreden en bruggen zijn ingestort. In het hele gebied is de noodtoestand uitgeroepen. De omstandigheden voor de toeristen zijn verre van ideaal, omdat voedsel en water moeilijk tot bij hen geraakt. De meeste Belgische toeristen zijn jong en in goede gezondheid. Er wordt voorrang gegeven aan kinderen, zieken en zestigplussers.

Located at 2,430 meters above sea level (nearly 8,000 feet), Machu Picchu is difficult to reach because it is surrounded by many high ridges and steep-sided valleys. The ancient citadel is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and tourism is essentially the only source of income in the area. While the site was not damaged, officials predicted it would be cut off for weeks if not months as the damage to surrounding roads and trails was assessed and repaired. As many as 20 people may have died in the flooding, while 2,000 homes were ruined.
