quote:
“We’ve seen these reports before, reports saying there was going to be a greenlight in a couple of days — well, a week’s gone by and there isn’t one," adds Jackson. "You can’t believe everything you read. There is only one thing you want to believe and that’s when the studio announces a greenlight. As far as I’m aware that’s not going to be today. I keep hearing positive things. Everyone’s working very hard. There’s a lot of people at Warner Bros. who are working around the clock trying to manoeuvre through the MGM complexities. MGM is a company that is about to go bankrupt and in a way they are about to take The Hobbit into bankruptcy hell with them when they go down. Warners are trying to extract The Hobbit out of the bankruptcy hell before it happens. It is just so complicated I can’t even put my head into it. It’s all to do with American copyright laws, bankruptcy laws. A lot of Warner Bros. lawyers are working round the clock at the moment trying to make it happen so let’s see."

quote:
This piece of news is a long time coming! The Wrap reports that MGM and Warner Bros. have reached a deal to officially start work on the highly anticipated prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy The Hobbit!

And here's the cherry on top of that nerd-gasmic sundae - Peter Jackson will direct the two part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved novel! According to the source, production will begin in February in New Zealand, bringing the crew back to the Middle Earth sets where the original trilogy was shot.

For fans of the film franchise and casual observers of this often heartbreaking tale of financial woes and flip-flopping talent, today's announcement is a major sigh of relief. If there never was a plan to adapt The Hobbit, there wouldn't have been such an outcry when the project went into jeopardy as a result of MGM's money troubles. People's hopes were drummed up only to be let down time and time again as one problem after another kept the film from rolling before cameras.

Now, as Oscar winner Jackson, who also co-wrote and will produce the epic two-part production, is ready to rock, the sky is the limit for The Hobbit, which should first hit theaters in December 2012 before completing in December of 2013. Though there's still no word on who will play protagonist Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman has been most recently rumored for the part), Sir Ian McKellen is set to reprise his role as Gandalf the Grey in the film, while other characters from LOTR like Hugo Weaving's Elrond and Cate Blanchett's Galadriel could show up at some point or another.

Peter Jackson has his fearless burglar in the bag. Or should we say, the Baggins?

The studios behind The Hobbit officially confirmed Thursday that British actor Martin Freeman will be playing the titular Shire hero, Bilbo Baggins, in Jackson's two-part Lord of the Rings prequel.

"Despite the various rumours and speculation surrounding this role, there has only ever been one Bilbo Baggins for us," Jackson said in a statement.

But Bilbo isn't going it alone in today's casting news. MGM, New Line and Warner Bros. also rolled out a roster of actors who will be playing the hobbit's comrades in treasure hunting and Smaug slaying...

Brit Richard Armitage, who presumably will be seen in Captain America: The First Avenger long before The Hobbit's journey concludes, has signed on to play Thorin Oakenshield, head of the company of dwarves who are off to recapture his lost inheritance.

Rounding out the troop are Aidan Turner and Rob Kazinsky as Kili and Fili; Graham McTavish as Dwalin; John Callen as Oin; Stephen Hunter as Bombur; Mark Hadlow as Dori; and Peter Hambleton as Gloin. (You never know which one of them is going to be the next Dominic Monaghan!)

The manly group will gather in February—possibly in New Zealand, possibly elsewhere—to start shooting the long-awaited epic.

In response to the decision made by SAG, AFTRA and New Zealand Actors' Equity not to boycott or otherwise interfere with the production, the studios said in a joint statement earlier today that they are still waiting to hear from other industry unions before they make their final decision about whether to move production out of New Zealand, where LOTR was shot.

"The actions of these unions have caused us substantial damage and disruption and forced us to consider other filming locations for the first time," the studios said. "Alternative locations are still being considered."

Meanwhile, since the film was officially greenlighted, there's been no word on whether Ian McKellen, who's been attached as Gandalf since the project's inception, or Andy "Gollum" Serkis are officially on board.

In an official press conference a few hours ago, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key announced that both "The Hobbit" and its untitled sequel are keeping their productions in New Zealand according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Following on from labor disputes, media fights and considerations of moving the production to Europe or other locations, the announcement essentially brings to a close a media whirlwind that has been making headlines for several weeks now. It also means the production will continue on track for its planned start of production in February with the two films to score releases on December 2012 and December 2013.

Keys added that the government would immediately introduce into parliament legislation sought by Warners that would clarify the distinction between contractors and employees in the film production industry.

Securing the films however comes at a price - $25 million U.S. dollars to be exact. The Government plans to broaden the criteria for its large budget incentive program, resulting in an additional rebate to Warners of $15 million. They will also offset up to US$10 million of Warners' marketing costs in a planned strategic partnership that will promote New Zealand as both a destination for tourism and film production.
