quote:Charlie Weis is out after five seasons as Notre Dame coach.
A member of Notre Dame's coaching staff told ESPN's Joe Schad on Monday that the staff was informed of the decision in an afternoon meeting.
The New York Daily News first reported that Weis was out.
Notre Dame players have scheduled a mid-afternoon players meeting that will include a vote on whether they want to play in a bowl game after a 6-6 season. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick has said he will consider the players' wishes in deciding on a bowl trip.
The member of the coaching staff told Schad a decision hasn't been made on an interim coach; Notre Dame will wait to see whether the players will decide if they want to participate in a bowl game first.
Weis was not in his office early Monday, though there were no announcements about whether he will return for a sixth season. Swarbrick has said he will make that decision within the next few days.
Ik heb een bloedhekel aan de Noles maar heb wel groot respect wat hij met de Noles gepresteerd heeft.quote:TALLAHASSEE -- Legendary Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, who built one of college football's greatest dynasties in 34 seasons with the Seminoles, plans to announce his retirement Tuesday morning, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com.
Bowden, whose 388 career victories trail only Penn State's Joe Paterno as college football's winningest coach, met with FSU president TK Wetherell and athletic director Randy Spetman on Monday morning. According to sources, Bowden was given two options: return to FSU in 2010 as an ambassador to the program, in which he would have little input in the day-to-day operations of the program, or retire after the Seminoles' upcoming bowl game.
Sources told ESPN.com that offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, who was named Bowden's eventual successor near the end of the 2007 season, has agreed to contract terms to replace Bowden after this season. The school's booster organization would have owed Fisher $5 million if he didn't replace Bowden by January 2011.
Bowden, 80, led FSU to national championships in 1993 and '99 and 14 consecutive top-five finishes in the Associated Press top 25 poll from 1987 to 2000. But the Seminoles finished 6-6 after last week's 37-10 loss at No. 1 Florida, which was the third time in four seasons that FSU lost six games.
Ik ben benieuwd hoe Meyer dit gaat aanpakken.quote:GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Top-ranked Florida could be without one of its best pass rushers against No. 2 Alabama in the Southeastern Conference championship game.
Defensive end Carlos Dunlap was arrested early Tuesday and charged with driving under the influence, just days before the biggest game of Florida’s season.
“We are aware of the incident and are currently gathering more information,” coach Urban Meyer said in a statement released by the school.
Meyer was expected to address the situation in more detail after practice Tuesday.
Dunlap, a junior from North Charleston, S.C., was released Tuesday morning on his own recognizance after his initial appearance at the Alachua County Jail. He was arrested at 3:25 a.m.
According to Gainesville Police spokesman Keith Kameg, an officer was dispatched to check out reports of a reckless driver near campus. When the officer spotted the car stopped at an intersection, he noticed the red 2000 Chrysler was not moving through several green lights.
The officer found Dunlap slumped over and asleep at the wheel. The officer woke up Dunlap through a cracked window, but he “would only open his eyes momentarily and then fall back asleep,” Kameg said.
The officer unlocked the door, put the car in park and turned off the ignition. Dunlap got out and “was very groggy and had difficulty speaking and listening to instructions,” Kameg said.
According to police, Dunlap had watery and bloodshot eyes, and there was a smell of alcohol. Dunlap failed a field sobriety test, refused a breath test and was booked.
Dunlap, the defensive MVP of last season’s Bowl Championship Series national title game, has started every game this season for the defending champs. He has 35 tackles and is tied for the team lead with seven sacks heading into Saturday’s SEC title game.
