She was 84. Knight died Sunday at a Harlem, New York, nursing home of complications from pneumonia, according to her manager Mark Carpentieri. Knight and Tharpe had a string of gospel hits such as Beams of Heaven, Didn't It Rain and Up Above My Head.
Knight also spent some time in the 1960s singing R&B with the likes of Brook Benton, the Drifters and Clyde McPhatter before relaunching her career as a solo gospel singer. Knight was born in Sanford, Fla., but raised in Newark, N.J. She began singing spirituals at her parents' church at age five.
