interview met Ronald de Boer.
It may have left Celtic bristling with indignation but Ronald de Boer, the former Rangers player is not so sure that the Scottish side have any right to feel they are more suited to the Champions League than Twente, who have yet to feature in the illustrious competition.
"If it transpires that Celtic and Twente meet, I think I would say that Twente would be favourites to go through," said De Boer.
And before cynics shrug and claim that a former Rangers player is always likely to back a team from his homeland ahead of Celtic, the candid Dutchman was keen to back up his argument.
"I don't think Celtic are the Celtic they were even just two or three seasons ago," he said. "Twente, on the other hand, really impressed me last season.
They finished runners-up in the very competitive Dutch league and they play well as a unit. They have no superstars but are a competent side and they like to get the ball down and pass it.
"Steve McClaren has also made a decent impression in Holland. He has done very well with the squad of players he has and I think a lot of people think very highly of him as a coach.
"I read that he had said he wanted to play Celtic, but I don't think he meant in a cheeky way. I would have to say that I would put my money on Twente beating Celtic, because I think they are a better side. Of course, Celtic may bring in one or two players between now and the end of the month but right now the situation with a new manager and a big pressure game can work in Twente's favour."
McClaren's young side went out of the Champions League qualifying stages to Arsenal last term when they were soundly beaten 6-0 on aggregate, which should offer an indication of their inexperience in continental competition. That is the one factor De Boer believes could work against them should they travel to Glasgow.
"People do tend to think of Scottish football as being an easy option, but Celtic and Rangers can be daunting on their own turf," he admitted. "Twente don't have the kind of experience where you would think they would take a hostile atmosphere at Celtic Park in their stride because it would be new to some of their players, so Celtic will always have that going for them."
"Van Duitsers heb je pas gewonnen als ze met de bus de stad uit zijn."
