Istomin had geloof ik wel een blessure, maar dat zou redelijk in de starting odds verwerkt moeten zijn.
Was er vorige week ook niet een fishy match met Istomin?

At least 10 matches on the men's ATP tour are being investigated by the tennis anti-corruption unit, Sportsmail can today reveal.

The cases relate to suspect betting patterns - where betting has moved perversely against the run of play - and all have caused sufficient alarm for them to be referred to the Tennis Integrity Unit.

Many of the matches, all revealed to Sportsmail, involve players in the world's top 100. Today Sportsmail can reveal:

THE security unit at online betting exchange Betfair alone were so alarmed by gambling patterns on at least 10 occasions in 2009 that they referred the matches straight to the sport's authorities.

AFTER Wimbledon, where around £1million was wagered on an obscure early-round match, five matches in eight days at lesser tournaments sounded the alarm.

DESPITE tennis's wealth, there are still only two full-time employees in the TIU, far fewer than in comparable sporting agencies, trying to police a game played 11 months per year all over the world by men and women.

The 10 matches under investigation, details of which Sportsmail has seen but cannot publish for legal reasons, include large amounts of money being put on weaker players or players who are in losing positions and odds on matches changing dramatically during play with no correlation to the score.

Specific incidents include one punter who tried to put £30,000 on a player who was drawing 3-3 in the deciding set and went on to win and customers betting against a player who was a set and a break up but went on to lose.

None of the game's blue-riband players are being investigated and all of the reported matches were first-round ties and therefore more likely to go under the radar. In the 10 matches, one player appears three times while another two appear twice.

Yet, as with the dozens of matches that have caused similar concerns since the issue raised its head more than five years ago, no player has been punished and those repeatedly under scrutiny are continuing their careers regardless.

Two weeks after Andre Agassi revealed how he easily duped the ATP Tour over drug taking, it again raises questions over how seriously the sport's authorities are facing up to sinister activities in its ranks.

The game's authorities claim they have responded robustly to the spate of match-fixing that broke out around 2004-5, but doubts remain about how serious the alphabet soup of governing bodies is in tackling this ever-present threat. The most notorious case was that of Nikolay Davydenko (right) versus Martin Vassallo Arguello in Poland two summers ago.

An exhaustive inquiry came to nothing and the episode is now officially closed.

There is a new army of tennis gamblers on Betfair, which allows punters to bet against each other on the internet as a match progresses, meaning they can bet as a contest twists and turns. The sport has been Betfair's biggest growth market in the past five years. The website co-operates with investigations.

The TIU is manned by two retired British policemen in their sixties, Jeff Rees and Bruce Ewen. They were only recently given part-time, clerical support staff.

In 2005 the ATP Tour was given hard evidence that one high-profile star from Eastern Europe was betting on another to lose a match at a tournament in France. No action was taken. It is believed that corrupt gamblers targetted lower level players who struggle to break even.

Those particularly vulnerable are male players who have failed to establish themselves in the top 50, where there is serious money to be made legitimately, and the corrupters are helped by a ranking system ideally suited to skullduggery. Most players are only required to count ranking points gained for their best 18 tournaments over a 12-month period.

A shady by-product of this - one that remains conspicuously unreformed - is that many first-round matches can be lost without harm done to a player's ranking. One tournament, off the tour since since its last edition in 2006, that quickly became notorious for match-fixing was the late autumn event in Palermo.

Subsequent investigations found that Italy was probably the hub of such activity with two major syndicates located, one in the south and one in the north, while another existed in Moscow.

In late 2007 and early 2008 six relatively obscure Italian players were fined or suspended for the much lesser offence of actually betting on matches, as opposed to being involved in manipulation.

Following the Davydenko affair, two corruption investigators from other sports - Rees and Ben Gunn - wrote a report and offered two models for a unit to combat the problem. Despite being a sport awash with money, tennis deliberately went with the cheaper of the two and, crucially, the one that did not include full-time staff using state-of-the-art technology.

The latest programmes can do such things such as track internet profile addresses to within a mile of their location and even pinpoint what accounts are being used on which personal computers.

The British Horseracing Board alone have 14 staff with access to this, while cricket, with nothing like the global spread of tennis, has nine full-time staff to combat potential corruption.

The Tennis Integrity Unit has a standard reply to questions about its activities: 'The Unit would not comment on any past or ongoing investigations that may or may not have occurred. The reason for this is that any ongoing investigation and related legal process can itself be compromised merely by confirming its existence.'

Vorige week gaf ze op bij een 4-0 voorsprong, vandaag bij een 6-2 1-1 voorsprong. No way dat zoiets fixers zijn...Probeert gewoon te snel terug te komen van een blessure lijkt me, maar wel bizar.
