Maybe he was sampling the free booze, maybe he mistook a dude for
, or maybe you just don't mess with Jack Bauer. Whatever the reason, multiple outlets are reporting that Canadian actor Kiefer Sutherland took a break from schmoozing at an afterparty for Monday night’s Met Costume Institute Gala to headbutt Proenza Schouler co-founder Jack McCollough, leaving the designer with a bloody nose.
According to TMZ, the 24 star Jack Bauer-ed McCollough's face as an act of chivalry -- in defense of Brooke Shields (who, incidentally, is a friend of the designer).
Shields and Sutherland were reportedly chatting at an afterparty in Soho when McCollough turned up, allegedly interrupting their conversation. According to the New York Daily News' sources, McCollough "jostled" the actress as he butted into the scene. Sutherland then reportedly demanded an apology, before laying the "jackdown." While the News' witnesses claimed that Sutherland left the designer's nose busted, the police report obtained by the News says McCollough’s only injury was a cut on his nose.
Though these initial reports are saying Sutherland jumped to Shields' defense, the actress' rep is maintaining that milady was not, in fact, in distress.
"Jack [McCollough, not Bauer] did nothing inappropriate. It's not clear what caused Kiefer to do what he did," Shields' flack told TMZ.
McCollough's been a bit more eloquent on the subject. As reported by the News, the designer told police that Sutherland "was drunk and obnoxious and wouldn't back down or be logical," going on to say Sutherland "pulled this stupid wrestling move like a teenager" before bashing the designer’s head.
Sutherland's side of the story has yet to surface, though it is being sought by authorities in a misdemeanor investigation. People magazine reports that both he and Shields are expected to speak with police some time today.
