Three Things Obama Should Think About While Watching The Pacific

At approximately 5 p.m. today, Barack and Michelle Obama will host a screening of The Pacific, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg’s new HBO miniseries documenting the American Marines involvement in the Pacific theater during World War II. Hanks and Spielberg will be on hand, as will national security adviser and retired four-star general James L. Jones, as well as members of the V.F.W. and Women in the Military Service for the American Memorial.

As the president draws down troops in Iraq and ramps up the war in Afghanistan, he has a lot to learn from America’s past conflicts. This fall, when the White House was reevaluating its strategy on Afghanistan, Obama’s staff passed around Lessons in Disaster, Gordon Goldstein’s account of then national security adviser McGeorge Bundy’s poor decision-making in the early days of Vietnam. The Pacific is a miniseries, not a documentary or memoir, but Hanks and Spielberg (who also produced Band of Brothers) stay true to history’s timeline. Herewith, three things Obama should reflect upon about while watching The Pacific.

1. Veterans Affairs: The war may be unpopular at home, but the men and women that have served overseas deserve our support—emotional, fiscal, and medical—back home. A decade into two wars, we’re only seeing the beginning of a large group of veterans—wounded and unwounded—reintegrating into society.

2. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: Both The Pacific and Band of Brothers focus on the horrors of the war and the emotional trauma that a soldier or Marine can endure. P.T.S.D. should be treated with as much seriousness as a gunshot wound. If the president is going to send tens of thousands more troops to south Asia, he also needs to consider the emotional payload. With suicide rates up among veterans—accounting for 20 percent of all suicides among Americans—the government must dedicate more money to support programs for our returning troops.

3. Soldiers’ Sacrifice: The president writes a note to the family of each service member killed in action (but not to the families of those who commit suicide). Casualties are drastically lower than they ever were in Vietnam and WWII, but the men and women in our all-volunteer force are putting their lives on the line every time they step outside the wire or simply walk to a latrine. Whenever Obama discusses the war in Afghanistan, he is careful to acknowledge the tremendous danger our troops face and their selflessness in fighting. But the White House has not constructed a strong or prevalent enough narrative illustrating that, whether or not you support the war, young Americans are shedding their blood for you. It makes its way into the crevices of each speech and discussion in Washington and across the nation, when it deserves to be at the forefront of the conversation.

Tevens: Deze serie kijken met reclame als je het al twee weken eerder reclameloos kunt zien. HBO zend het (uiteraard) sowieso zonder commercial onderbrekingen uit.
