TOKYO, (CNN) -- Japan is mobilizing its missile defense system, and U.S. Navy ships are deploying to the Sea of Japan, as North Korea prepares to launch a rocket that is expected next month, officials said.

Japan's move, aimed at shooting down debris from the launch that might fall into its territory, is notable for a country with a pacifist constitution.

The U.S. ships are capable of shooting down ballistic missiles, a Navy spokesman said.

North Korea says it will launch a commercial satellite on top of a rocket sometime between April 4 and April 8. But other governments fear the North Koreans will actually put a long-range missile on top of the rocket.

The United States and Japan have been stepping up pressure on North Korea, hoping to head off the launch.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin on Friday also urged North Korea to not launch the rocket, Russia's Interfax news agency reported.

Japan's military has two-pronged orders: to move destroyers carrying air-to-sea missiles to the Sea of Japan, which separates Japan and North Korea, and to send land-to-air missiles to northern Japan.

However, the probability of a missile successfully hitting a moving target without a known trajectory -- as in the case of debris -- is very low, Japanese Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshitada Konoike said earlier this week.

If North Korea launches, the United States may have as little as five minutes to decide whether it is a threat and, if necessary, try to shoot it down.

The U.S. ships that are being moved to the Sea of Japan are "prepared to track a launch or more, if afforded," according to a U.S. Navy official who could not be named because of the sensitivity of the information.

The United States generally has a number of Aegis-capable ships in the Sea of Japan because of the threat posed by North Korea to launch missiles. The ships monitor the region and are designed to track and, if need be, shoot down ballistic missiles.

The USS Hopper, a destroyer with the Aegis radar system aboard, was scheduled for a port call in Japan in coming days. But the port call was canceled and the ship will remain in the Sea of Japan ahead of the launch, the official said.

Two other U.S. Navy Aegis-capable destroyers, the USS Chaffee and USS McCain, were leaving the port in Sasebo, Japan, and were heading to South Korea for a ceremony in coming days, according to the U.S. Navy official with direct knowledge of the operations.

The U.S. Navy just wrapped up military exercises with the South Korean military, bringing a number of its ships into the region.

Japan mag van de grondwet geen vliegdekschepen bezitten, en wilden wel een stel kleine vliegdekschepen hebben omdat het kosteneffectiever is om met helikopters vanaf een vliegdekschip te werken dan vanaf een fregat of destroyer.

Dus hebben ze de specs omgegooid naar een LST.

North Korea has mounted a rocket on a launch pad on its northeast coast, American intelligence officials say, putting Pyongyang well on track for a launch in about a week's time that the U.S. and South Korea warned Thursday would be a major provocation with serious consequences.

Pyongyang says the rocket will carry a satellite, but regional powers suspect the North will use the launch to test the delivery technology for a long-range missile capable of striking Alaska. They have said the launch — banned by the U.N. Security Council in 2006 — would trigger sanctions.

Sankei Shimbun meldde ook dat Noord-Korea bij de lancering hulp krijgt van ongeveer vijftien Iraanse raketgeleerden. Zij zouden een brief hebben meegekregen van de Iraanse president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad aan de Noord-Koreaanse leider Kim Jong-il, waarin Ahmadinejad het belang van samenwerking tussen de beide landen in de ruimtevaart benadrukt.

Ze kunnen het wel, maar niet met absolute zekerheid. Zeg dat het 50-50 is dat ze dat ding succesvol neerhalen. Als het dan niet lukt zijn ze voor de hele wereld te kakken gezet en weten Iran, China, etc dat het anti-raket programma bij lange na niet is wat de Amerikanen ervan gemaakt hebben. North Korea says it will send a communications satellite into orbit on a multi-stage rocket between April 4 and 8. The U.S., South Korea and Japan think the communist regime is using the launch to test long-range missile technology, and they warn Pyongyang would face sanctions under a U.N. Security Council resolution banning the country from ballistic activity.

Japan has deployed battleships and Patriot missile interceptors off its northern coast to shoot down any rocket debris that the North has said might fall over the area.

Tokyo has said it is only protecting its territory and has no intention of trying to shoot down the rocket itself, but North Korea said it is not convinced and accused Japan of inciting militarism at home to justify developing a nuclear weapons program of its own.

If Japan tries to intercept the satellite, the North's army "will consider this as the start of Japan's war of re-invasion more than six decades after the Second World War and mercilessly destroy all its interceptor means and citadels with the most powerful military means," the North's official Korean Central News Agency said Tuesday.

China, North Korea's neighbor and often-estranged ally, continued to appeal for all the powers in the region to show restraint and "refrain from any action that would further complicate the situation," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told reporters in Beijing.

But Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso said he is ready to pursue punishment by the Security Council if North Korea fires the rocket, which already is on the launch pad.

"It would be crucial for the international community to make concerted action," Aso told a news conference after both houses of Japan's parliament passed a resolution strongly urging the North to forego the launch.

Sinds men twijfelt over zijn gezondheid zie je zelfs een meer provocerend NK. Daarnaast zijn er genoeg legerleiders die z'n taken willen overnemen. Hij heeft ook nog een zoon trouwens.
