House is eind jaren 1970 ontstaan. De eerste house klinkt niet echt als de latere house. Het wordt dan ook wel proto-house genoemd. Rond 1983 ontstaat langzaam de vorm waarin house bekend werd in onder andere de Warehouse in Chicago (waar house-muziek ook zijn naam aan dankt), waar onder andere Frankie Knuckles draaide, en in de Paradise Garage (waar de term garage vandaan komt) in New York, waar Larry Levan zijn draaikunsten vertoonde.
