Best Drama Series: “Mad Men”

Well, duh. Nice to see Matt Weiner get his Globe moment after last year’s win went unseen, though.

Best Actress in a Drama: Kate Winslet, “Revolutionary Road”

Wow. I mean, just… wow. Who saw that coming? Unprecedented, I should think. In any case, a fair reward for a fine performance — so was that undeserved supporting award really necessary, HFPA?

Who cares what happens in the Drama categories? This is the best slate of Musical/Comedy winners I can remember since, well, I don’t know when.

Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy: Colin Farrell, “In Bruges”

Ha, so my last-minute hunch came through. Allow me to feel all smug and satisfied — not just because of that, but because Farrell was easily the most deserving of the bunch. I’m ecstatic. Speech of the night so far too… is is too late to give him an Oscar nod? (Yes, but still…)

Best Director: Danny Boyle, “Slumdog Millionaire”

And the Oscar goes to… start engraving it now, folks. And you won’t hear any complaint from me — a brilliant filmmaker, unrewarded for too long, and one of the single nicest people I’ve ever met. Maybe it’s not his best film, but what’s new?

By the way, I realize I’ve been a little snide about four-time winner “John Adams” tonight, so in the interests of balance, let me point you to Kris’ rather more measured, intelligent assessment here.

Okay, so Steven Spielberg is a genius of sorts and I bow to no one in my admiration for Martin Scorsese. But will anyone think me disrespectful if I use the Cecil B. DeMille award as an opportunity to run to the kitchen and make myself another hot-chocolate-cognac toddy? (Don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it.)

I’ve tried to like “30 Rock.” Hell, I’ve tried just to get “30 Rock.” I don’t. It’s my failing. Let’s move on. (I love you, “Weeds.”)

I won’t lie to you, I had that one typed out before the envelope was opened. Are we done with “John Adams” now? Can we file it away in the archives of Worthy Achievements Stuffed With Great Actors That No One Will Ever Watch Again?

Best Actor in Comedy Series: Alec Baldwin, “30 Rock”

OK, I know “30 Rock” hasn’t been winning awards for the last ten years running. It just feels that way.

Best Screenplay: Simon Beaufoy, “Slumdog Millionaire”

The film remains a triumph of directing over writing for me, but with that beige slate of nominees, I’m hardly complaining.

Best Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries: Laura Linney, “John Adams”

Well, I do love Laura Linney, at least.

I want so badly to love this film. Why don’t I? Answers on a postcard, please.

Sorry for the delay, but I had to savour that moment. For the first time in a very long while in my history of awards-watching I feel genuinely proud of a winner. Nicely done, Ms. Hawkins — and stunning glam-up job too.

The biggest upset since … oh, I don’t know … gravity?

Best Actress in a Drama Series (TV): Anna Paquin, “True Blood”

Seriously? Well, I guess January Jones is insanely beautiful, madly talented and in the best show on TV, so she doesn’t need any extra hardware to prove it. And I’ve always liked Anna Paquin but … seriously?

Best Actor in a Drama Series (TV): Gabriel Byrne, “In Treatment”

OK, so Jon Hamm won last year. But still.

Best Supporting Actress (TV): Laura Dern, “Recount”

My God, Dern was stunning in this. If it had been a theatrical release, she’d be racking up awards, mark my words.

Best Supporting Actor (TV): Tom Wilkinson, “John Adams”

Maybe it’s a British thing, but I was left thoroughly unmoved by “John Adams.” But hell, I’m happy to see Tom Wilkinson win anything.
