Men mag de Royals volledig te kakken zetten in Spitting Image maar geliefde oudere acteurs zijn zowat heilig. Logisch dat de jongere generatie anders denkt, die kennen die ouwetjes niet eens. Aan de andere kant, wat was het ook zo flauw, kinderachtig zelfs, beetje Beelenachtig, de Britse humor onwaardig. Laten ze met die kleindochter dan wat uithalen, áls het al moet, kennelijk zit het die Brand hoog (hebbie wat te verbergen?), maar een ouwe baas die van niks weet, zooooo laf.

The BBC will be plunged into a multi-million pound legal battle with Jonathan Ross if he is dismissed at the end of the internal inquiry,

Ross has 18 months to run of his three year £18 million contract which is the most expensive in the history of the BBC. All his shows for the BBC are made by his own production company, Hot Sauce.

The contract includes a clause which gives the BBC the right to terminate the agreement, at short notice, if the corporation is brought into disrepute by his actions.

Even though Mark Thompson, the director-general, has accused Ross of a "gross lapse in taste", his lawyers would sue the corporation if he is fired.

The lewd remarks by Ross, who was a guest on Russell Brand's Radio 2 show, were pre-recorded and broadcast two days later on October 18. They had been subjected to the usual internal compliance procedure.

But Ross and his legal advisers will argue that any blame is attached to the BBC for permitting the comments to be broadcast in the first place. They will argue that if anyone is dismissed or disciplined it should be the producers of the show and compliance team.

One source said: "Ross was in a studio, on someone else's show, with a producer and an engineer. They tapes were sent to a senior member of staff to be vetted in the usual way and they were cleared. So whose fault is that? I think lawyers would have a field day if the BBC tries to scapegoat the presenters."

The BBC is anxious to avoid an expensive and damaging legal row with Ross who Mark Thompson regards as "genuine talent".

Senior management are aware that they would have another public relations disaster on their hands, after the damaging publicity of the last three days, if they had to give Ross the £9 million outstanding on his contract. Ross may also consider suing for any damage to his reputation and loss of earnings.

With the BBC making 1,800 people redundant, and the country in severe recession, the BBC is anxious to minimise any financial fallout from the row over Ross and Brand. A BBC source said: "They are issues but not ones that can be taken into account in the internal inquiry which is to establish what went wrong with the compliance procedure."

Russell Brand en Jonathan Ross, bekende Britse radio- en televisiepersoonlijkheden, maakten in de radioshow van Brand seksuele grappen over de kleindochter van de 78-jarige Sachs. Brand heeft Radio 2 inmiddels verlaten, Ross is geschorst. De directeur zal met de raad bespreken welke acties de omroep moet ondernemen om de schade te beperken.

Ontslagen
Kleindochter Georgina Baillie (23) vertelde dagblad The Sun dat Brand en Ross ontslagen zouden moeten worden voor de telefoontjes naar haar grootvader. Sachs liet weten respect te hebben voor het opstappen van Brand.

Het Britse commissariaat van de media Ofcom is een onderzoek begonnen naar de gang van zaken.

Verklaring
Brand liet in een verklaring weten dat hij alle verantwoordelijkheid op zich neemt. "Ik werd meegesleept en vergat temidden van alle grove opmerkingen en flauwe liedjes dat de gevoelens van een briljant acteur en een lieve jonge vrouw werden geraakt."

Ross verklaarde: "Ik zeg oprecht sorry en ik heb er echt spijt van dat ik zoveel ellende en verdriet heb veroorzaakt met mijn kinderachtige en onbezonnen opmerkingen in de uitzending van Russell Brand."

Het hoofd van BBC Radio 2, Lesley Douglas, heeft ontslag genomen. Ze diende haar ontslag in wegens de rel om de uit de hand gelopen treitertelefoontjes in de radioshow van Russell Brand op de zender. Dat meldt BBC News.

Vanochtend diende Brand zelf ook al zijn ontslag in. Gisteren waren hij en collega Jonathan Ross al geschorst. Ze hadden in de radioshow van Brand herhaaldelijk de voicemail van Andrew Sachs ingesproken met de boodschap dat Brand het bed heeft gedeeld met diens kleindochter.

"Eigen beslissing"
Brand verklaarde spijt te hebben van de uit de hand gelopen grap. "Ik liet me een beetje meeslepen en vergat dat de grove opmerkingen en gekke liedjes de gevoelens kwetsten van een geliefde en briljante acteur en een heel lief jong meisje met een groot hart", stelde hij in een verklaring.

Radio 2-baas Douglas benadrukt dat ze zelf heeft besloten om bij de BBC te stoppen en dat de omroep haar daar niet toe heeft geforceerd. "Het was mijn eigen beslissing, echt alleen van mezelf", verklaarde ze tegenover BBC News.

Russell Brand heeft de award voor beste live stand-upcomedian gewonnen bij de British Comedy Awards. De omstreden komiek was niet aanwezig op de show in Londen. In een videoboodschap verklaarde Brand zijn award op te dragen aan Jonathan Ross.

Met die opmerking verwees Brand naar het incident waarbij hij en Ross vorige maand betrokken waren. Ross was ook genomineerd voor een British Comedy Award. Zijn talkshow 'Friday night with Jonathan Ross' maakte kans op de prijs voor beste komedieshow. TV Burp van Harry Hill won echter in deze categorie.

De presentator raakte eind oktober verwikkeld in een schandaal toen hij samen met komiek en radio-dj Russell Brand in diens show een bericht achterliet op het antwoordapparaat van hoogbejaarde acteur Andrew Sachs (Fawlty Towers), waarin ze seksuele handelingen met Sachs’ kleindochter (een stripper en pornoactrice) bezongen. Russell is daarna opgestapt.

Jonathan Ross has announced he is leaving the BBC, after 13 years working for the corporation.

Ross, 49, who is the BBC's highest paid star, said in a statement he had decided not to renegotiate his contract when it ends in July.

The presenter added his decision to leave was not "financially motivated".

In 2008, the controversial host was suspended for making a series of phone calls to actor Andrew Sachs on Russell Brand's Radio 2 show.

Delivering a tray of tea to reporters standing in the snow outside his north London home, Ross said: "It's probably not a bad time for me to move on - and it's probably not a bad time for the BBC, either.

"I've got six months left, I'm hoping to make the best shows of my career with them."

One of the biggest names at the BBC, Ross currently hosts his own Friday night chat show, Radio 2 show and a film review programme.

The announcement comes a day after it was revealed that Graham Norton had signed a two-year deal with the corporation prompting newspaper speculation that he would take over Ross's Friday night slot on BBC One.

But BBC creative director Alan Yentob said it was "too premature" to make such decisions.

He added: "You don't need to compare Graham with Jonathan Ross. No decisions have been taken with that slot."

'Wonderful time'

It was reported that Ross's contract, which secured his services for the three years up to July 2010, was worth £18m.

The BBC has never confirmed that amount, but it was expected that Ross would be asked to accept a pay cut, following the lead of other big stars, such as Bruce Forsyth and Chris Moyles.

"Although I have had a wonderful time working for the BBC, and am very proud of the shows I have made while there, over the last two weeks I have decided not to re-negotiate when my current contract comes to an end," Ross said.

"While there, I have worked with some of the nicest and most talented people in the industry and had the opportunity to interview some of the biggest stars in the world, and am grateful to the BBC for such a marvellous experience.

"Lucrative offers"

"I would like to make it perfectly clear that no negotiations ever took place and that my decision is not financially motivated.

He said that he had previously turned down "more lucrative offers from other channels" because the BBC was "where I wanted to be".

He added: "As I have said before - I would happily have stayed there for any fee they cared to offer, but there were other considerations.

"I love making my Friday night talk show, my Saturday morning radio show and the Film Programme, and will miss them all."

The star said he will remain working for the BBC until the summer and will continue hosting the Bafta Film Awards, Comic Relief and other BBC specials.

"Working at the BBC has been a tremendous privilege, and I would like to thank everyone who has watched and listened so loyally over the last 13 years."


Jana Bennett, director of BBC Vision, said she could "understand" Ross's decision "following a difficult year".

She called him an "extremely talented broadcaster" and said all his programmes had been a "great success".

"I'm pleased that Jonathan will continue to apply his considerable abilities to the remaining six months of Friday Night, Film 2010 and his Radio 2 show," she said.

"I'm delighted that he will continue to present the Bafta awards and Comic Relief for BBC Television."

Ross has thanked fans posting on micro-blogging site Twitter, "Thanks for all the kind words about my decision. I feel sad that I can't keep making the shows so many of you love!"
