One of the two passengers of a KLM aircraft who was arrested at Cologne airport last Friday studies technical physics at Saxion, as appears from an announcement made by the Board of Management to inform all Saxion students and employees.
According to Saxion spokesman Rob Admiraal, the university was informed Tuesday “when from the side of the authorities questions were asked about a student enrolled at Saxion.” Subsequently Saxion informed the members of the student’s study group and his course lecturers. “Before Tuesday we didn't have the least suspicion that this student from Rheine was linked to possible terrorist actions.”
Mr Admiraal states that Saxion is not the object of the investigation and the hogeschool has not been approached by the German justice department for that. “Moreover, we don’t screen any students.” Saxion cannot exclude the student from his course, even if he is going to be prosecuted. Mr Admiraal: “Everyone is entitled to education.” Saxion informs all its employees and students but does not take any further steps. “All we can do is informing everybody”, says Mr Admiraal. “Moreover we’re dealing with someone who’s been arrested as a suspect.”
Meanwhile the current affairs programme Eén Vandaag has got wind of the Dutch link to the arrest. The show is going to pay attention to the matter tonight. After the broadcast, Saxion expects more media attention and in the announcement advises students and employees not to speak with the reporters and, instead, to refer to Dienst Interne en Externe Betrekkingen, the Saxion p.r. service department concerned with internal and external communication. Mr Admiraal: “I can imagine that students and staff don’t feel like giving interviews about this. But it’s just a piece of advice.”
