Robinho's career at Manchester City has not got off to the smoothest start following his switch from Real Madrid. The Brazilian stunned football by making a £32.5m move to Eastlands and not, as expected, to Londoners Chelsea. However, it appears the 24-year-old's deadline day move has still to sink in.

"On the last day, Chelsea made me a great proposal and I accepted it," he said, to which a reporter replied: "You mean Manchester right?". "Yeah, Manchester, sorry!" answered Robinho. Robinho's transfer overshadowed news of the other big-money deal on Monday, that of Dimitar Berbatov's £31m switch from Tottenham to rivals Manchester United.

However, it was later reported that the deal - funded by new City owners Abu Dhabi United Group - was concluded without Robinho, 24, taking a medical or even fully understanding the personal terms of his contract. And he said he hoped his reputation will not be tarnished by the manner in which he left La Liga champions.

"Unfortunately this kind of thing happens," he said. "Of course I don't want to fight and I don't like to be criticised in the press, with people saying I'm not a professional and that I don't follow what my contract says. I want to do what is written in my contract until it lasts! I don't want to be criticised and have my image damaged. Unfortunately this thing happened twice (with me), so be it!"

Real president Ramon Calderon had insisted he had no choice but to let Robinho leave the club, saying: "When he talked about his situation he cried and asked to leave Spain."

But Robinho hit back, saying: "I didn't cry. I just told him that I would like to leave. Since he was desperate because he didn't hire anyone, he pretended not to listen me. At the end, he made things even worse for me to leave, but I didn't cry. I only told him the truth, that was, if the club didn't want me to stay there, then I didn't want to stay at Real either. I wanted him to let me go, through the front door, without any fight."

Pele, the most famous Brazilian footballer, criticised Robinho's decision to join City, but the 24-year-old said defended his decision.

"Look, I accept Pele's criticism. He is the king of football. But, maybe, if he were in my shoes, he would have done the same thing," added Robinho. "I think that only someone who suffered as I suffered in Real Madrid may have something to say on this. People from outside, judging (this situation) is easy."

Daar moest wel veel geld aan te pas zijn gekomen, aangezien we niet eens in de Champions League uitkomen.’

Het niet te bevatten vermogen van ADUG ten spijt, denkt Gallagher dat Cristiano Ronaldo zich niet laat overhalen om United te verruilen voor City. ‘De laatste club waarnaar Ronaldo wordt getransfereerd is City.’ (MA)

Denk je dat hij nog steeds bij Madrid gezeten had, als City niet overgenomen was? Denk het niet. Als Robinho echt naar Chelsea wilde, hadden ze bij Madrid wel die 28 miljoen pond geaccepteerd.

Dit was natuurlijk een oplossing die voor alle partijen werkte, dus begrijpen doe ik het wel. Helemaal stijlvol vind ik het niet.

Manchester staat op zijn kop. De laatste week is het niet Manchester United, maar stadgenoot Manchester City dat de hoofdrol heeft in de Britse media. En het lijkt een kwestie van tijd voordat ook op het voetbalveld The Blues zullen uitgroeien tot een geduchte rivaal van The Red Devils.

Met de komst van Robinho deed City al flink wat wenkbrauwen fronsen. Had de Braziliaan zich soms vergist, vroeg menigeen zich af. Robinho versprak zich donderdag in ieder geval wel: 'Chelsea kwam op het laatste dag met een geweldig aanbod en ik besloot dat te accepteren. Eh, ik bedoel Manchester, sorry.'

Coach Mark Hughes bevestigde het gerucht dat City op de laatste dag van de transfermarkt grootse plannen had. De club was juist overgenomen door nieuwe eigenaren uit de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten en die besloten direct duidelijk te maken dat ze van The Citizens de grootste club ter wereld willen maken. En dus bracht City een bod uit op zes spelers, onder wie Mario Gomez (VfB Stuttgart), Dimitar Berbatov (Tottenham Hotspur), David Villa (Valencia), Ruud van Nistelrooy (Real Madrid) en Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Ajax).

'We hadden niet zomaar enkele namen verzonnen', verdedigt Hughes achteraf de opmerkelijke manier van zakendoen van de nieuwe eigenaren, Sulaiman Al-Fahim en de koninklijke familie van Abu Dhabi, Al-Nahayan. 'Het was de laatste dag van de transfermarkt en ze wilden een statement maken. Het was heel belangrijk voor hen: het was de eerste dag van de ramadan en ze wilden een impact maken. Niet alleen in Manchester, maar in de hele voetbalwereld. En dat hebben ze zeker gedaan. Het feit dat we Robinho hebben gehaald, heeft de hele selectie blij gemaakt.'


De coach kijkt al uit naar de volgende transferperiode als zijn club meer tijd heeft de tientallen Arabische miljoenen uit te geven, die van City naar verluidt de rijkste club van Engeland zullen maken. 'In januari zal het voor iedereen weer een opwindende tijd zijn. Er zijn spelers met exceptionele talenten van wie wij denken dat we hen naar hier kunnen halen. Maar clubs die in de Champions League spelen zullen in januari niet zo snel een speler laten gaan, dus het zal iets lastiger worden dan mensen denken.'

'Niets houdt ons nu nog tegen', voorspelt algemeen directeur Garry Cook echter heel overtuigd. 'Als je met een club voorwaarts gaat, dan laat je je niet stoppen om de beste spelers te halen. We gaan een nieuw tijdperk in. De fans zullen de beste spelers ter wereld gaan zien. Deze nieuwe eigenaren denken groots en hebben duidelijk laten weten wat hun ambities met de club zijn.'

Eigenaar én vastgoedmagnaat Al-Fahim zet die ambities nog even op een rijtje. 'De club heeft een geweldig voetbalstadion, een grootse geschiedenis en een fantastische aanhang, maar heeft nooit kunnen investeren. Daarvoor kunnen wij zorgen. We zullen kopiëren wat Roman Abramovitsj heeft gedaan met Chelsea. Maar we moeten ook onze club populairder maken. We kunnen er een merk van maken dat net zo groot is als Manchester United. En nóg groter.'

Coach Hughes blikt dan ook tevreden terug op de afgelopen hectische week. 'Iedereen is opgewonden door wat er is gebeurd. We zijn nu op het punt gekomen, dat we onze middelen kunnen aanspreken en de spelers, die we nodig hebben om succesvol te kunnen zijn, kunnen kopen.' En dat Pelé heeft beweerd dat Robinho de verkeerde club heeft gekozen, laat Hughes koud. 'Als Pelé begrijpt waarmee wij bezig zijn, dan zou hij zelf als speler óók voor ons hebben gekozen.'

Twaalf duels na aanvallen collega

NEWCASTLE - De Engelse voetbalbond FA heeft Joey Barton voor twaalf wedstrijden geschorst, waarvan zes voorwaardelijk. Ook kreeg hij een boete van ruim 30.000 euro. Barton krijgt die straf wegens het aanvallen van zijn ploeggenoot Ousmane Dabo tijdens een training van Manchester City.

De 26-jarige Engelsman komt geregeld negatief in het nieuws. Drie jaar geleden drukte hij tijdens een avondje stappen een sigaar in het oog van een ploeggenoot en vorig jaar viel hij in Liverpool een tiener aan. Barton kreeg voor die daad een gevangenisstraf van zes maanden, maar na tweeënhalve maand kwam hij alweer op vrije voeten.

Barton is momenteel in dienst bij Newcastle United. De middenvelder droeg één keer het shirt van de nationale ploeg. (ANP)

Mark Hughes is determined to ignore all the talk surrounding Manchester City as he looks forward to building on a good start to the season.
The current international break comes at the end of a week where the Blues bagged two Premier League wins either side of a nail-biting UEFA Cup victory. Following that came the deadline-day move for Robinho, but the Manager is dismissing suggestions that he is already eyeing the next transfer window.

“Actually I am looking forward to the end of the international break,” he asserts, “so we can get the players back and start working with them. I’m a football person, working with players is what I do and making them go in the direction we want is key. The other issues surrounding the Club will addressed by people with that expertise, so for now I’m just hoping that all my players come back fit and well.”

The arrival of the exciting Robinho has captured City fans’ imaginations, but regardless of who potential targets might be Hughes says that his basic approach towards buying players remains unchanged.

“I think the fans are right to be optimistic,” he continues, “but it takes time to build a team and as I have said before we have to make sure that the balance of the squad is right. That’s my job, but we’ll get there as quickly as we can.

“What’s important is that we will try to get value, if we can, if the right player is attainable. We’ll still look for good, young players who will gain value because that is what I always think is the right thing to do.

“We’ll make sure that we get the right players for the right positions, that’s building a football team and a club. We will go for players that I think will enhance our expectations for success. My role does not really change, maybe the sums of money and the means to get a different level of player changes. But the same mindset is here, and that’s bringing players that will help build a team.”

Robinho will meet up with his new team-mates after returning from Brazil’s World Cup qualifier in Rio against Bolivia late on Wednesday night, and Hughes does not think there will be any problem integrating him, or Argentinean defender Pablo Zabaleta, when his squad reconvenes.

“I don’t see a problem, we are getting world-class players here and if you ask any club about bringing those sorts of players in, the effect is always positive. The guys already here will see it as a challenge, they will have to up their game.

“You have to regenerate a team to bring in new faces, it stimulates the group and bringing in the likes of Robinho can only be a positive.”
