Goede Docu's?!

Psychopaths who have been convicted of appalling crimes explain with disturbing clarity what motivated them in their violent and destructive behaviour. They speak without shame, guilt, remorse or empathy with their victims. Though they are articulate and, at times, plausible and charming, they lack the range of emotions experienced by the rest of society. They know the difference between right and wrong but they do not feel it.

Robert Hare, Professor of Psychology at the University of Vancouver, has devised a system of assessment called the Psychopathy Checklist. In specialised interviews, psychologists assess individuals on a scale of 0 to 40 for a series of character traits, including callousness, superficial charm, lack of empathy and many others (for more detail look at How to recognise a psychopath). Anyone whose score is greater than 26 is diagnosed as psychopathic.

Een van de geinterviewden is J.Z. Knight.. Een medium dat een 30.000 (ofzo) jaren oude Ramtha (een strijder uit Atlantis) pretendeert te channelen.. Verder is het zo dat de makers van "What the bleep.." deel uit maken van de "Ramtha school of Enlightment".. Goed beschouwd is het niet veel meer dan een verkapte commercial voor deze 'sekte'.. Dat dit op een pseude-wetenschappelijke manier over de rug van de Quantum Mechanica gebeurt maakt het niet alleen een hele slechte docu., maar zelfs een gevaarlijke.. Bijna een belediging aan het adres van de wetenschap.

Vooral dat woord gevaarlijke

Mensen die niet nadenken zijn gevaarlijk. Voor mensen die wel kunnen nadenken is What the Bleep (vooral deel 2) best interessante materie. Nergens in de docu wordt trouwens gezegd dat het de ultieme waarheid is die verkondigd wordt.

En dan dat eeuwenoude argument dat 1 van die geinterviewden een medium is Lekker belangrijk zeg, je bent toch volwassen genoeg (hoop ik) om de boodschap los te zien van de boodschapper?

Als een moordenaar zegt dat het belangrijk is om van je familie te houden, ga jij dan het tegenovergestelde doen omdat je niet wilt doen wat een moordenaar zegt?

En het woord sekte is ook niet op zijn plaats. De makers vd docu staan gewoon open voor vragen en discussie zoals uit de extras van de dvd's wel blijkt. Daar wordt ook benadrukt dat het MAAR ideeen en niet de laatste waarheid die verkondigt wordt.

Reporter Aidan Hartley and producer Julie Noon begin their journey at the San Miguel Gate crossing. There, they meet Marta, a young woman who will pay people smugglers known as coyotes $3000 to get her across the border. She tells Hartley that she owes the coyotes the money which she will pay off once she gets a job, putting her into a form of bonded labour.

Travelling deeper into the desert, the team comes across a monument to the more than 2950 people, including children, who have died in this part of the desert. They are just some of the estimated million people who try to cross the border every year.

Hartley and Noon find one exhausted group, some of whom have been travelling for weeks already. They are only carrying tiny bottles of water in the scorching heat and are ill-equipped to survive the freezing nights as they begin their walk of up to fifty dangerous miles through the desert.

Crossing the border into the USA, the team meets a volunteer group in Tucson. They've produced what they call a death map, showing the distribution of some 4000 people who've died while crossing the desert since the mid 1990s. As border security and immigration move towards the top of the agenda in the upcoming US elections, the authorities are cracking down on migrants. The volunteer group tell Hartley that every time additional personnel or more technology are added to secure the border, the migrants are forced to take ever more circuitous routes and are exposed to the elements for longer periods, resulting in more deaths. A local forensic anthropologist tells Hartley that some migrants take their own life rather than die a painful death lost in the desert.

The team moves on to Phoenix where authorities have begun a crack-down on illegal migrants, which has sharply divided opinions and polarised the city. Local Sheriff Joe Arpaio tells the team that he believes all illegal migrants should be removed from the country. "We have a lot of money, I'm sure we could hire a few buses and go state by state, I'm sure they could load up the buses and spend some gas and deport take them to Mexico," he tells Hartley.

People trafficking has now become mixed up with narcotics gangs who are preying on migrants. Hartley visits the Drug Enforcement Administration's office in Tucson, which seizes nearly half of all marijuana entering the USA. Head of the Office, Anthony Coulson tells Hartley that traffickers are arranging for migrants to carry rucksacks containing 50lbs of the drug across the border, in return for a promise of transport to their final destination.

The team returns to the Mexican side of the frontier, where thousands of people are being returned across the border in buses. And just where they are dropped off, a gang of coyotes is waiting to pounce as the migrants to begin yet another attempt to fulfill their dreams and reach the promised land.

Wat is er in deze tijden verkeerd aan om tegen het kapitalisme te zijn? Heb je het boek No Logo van haar gelezen? The program sheds light on the vital data known inside the NSA but only partly relayed to other agencies. The trove of information the NSA had access to in advance included Osama bin Laden's now-disconnected direct satellite phone, which the NSA tapped starting in 1996. Exclusive footage shows the three-story house in Yemen that served as Al Qaeda's communications and logistics headquarters. The NSA was listening in on phone communications to and from the house for years prior to the 9/11 attack.

Three times the size of the CIA and far more secret, the NSA is comprised of top linguists, mathematicians, and technologists trained to decipher all kinds of communications—epitomizing the hidden world of high-tech, 21st-century surveillance. To show how this eavesdropping operates, NOVA follows the trail of just one typical e-mail sent from Asia to the U.S. Streaming as pulses of light into a fiber-optic cable, it travels across the Pacific Ocean, coming ashore in California, and finally reaching an AT&T facility in San Francisco, where the cable is split and the data sent to a secret NSA monitoring room on the floor below. This enables the NSA to intercept not only most Asian e-mail messages but also the entire U.S. internal Internet traffic.

Thus, since 9/11, the agency has turned its giant ear inward to monitor the communications of ordinary Americans, many of whom are on the government's secret watch list, now more than half-a-million names long.

But how effective is this monumental monitoring effort in countering security threats? The NSA is faced with an enormous and ever-expanding archive of phone calls and e-mail messages. Many experts in data mining and analysis are skeptical about the value of collecting so much information without the ability to understand it, as it may lead to critical clues being lost in the static. Among those interviewed on "The Spy Factory" are former NSA, CIA, and FBI analysts and officials, many speaking publicly for the first time. Among these is Mark Rossini, the senior FBI agent in the CIA's Osama bin Laden tracking unit. For the first time, Rossini tells how intelligence agency turf wars prevented him from notifying his FBI superiors that Al Qaeda terrorists were heading for the U.S. with valid visas in early 2000.

Surprisingly, the 9/11 Commission never looked closely into the NSA's role in the broad intelligence breakdown behind the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks. If they had, they would have understood the full extent to which the agency had major pieces of the puzzle but never put them together or disclosed their entire body of knowledge to the CIA and FBI. Traditionally, the NSA didn't share its raw data with those other agencies, an institutionalized reluctance that played a critical role in the failure to stop the 9/11 plotters. (Hear from Eleanor Hill, a former Staff Director of the House Intelligence Committee, on the myriad dangers inherent in such a tradition.)

In what Bamford calls "one of the largest ironies in the history of American intelligence," he notes that weeks before the attacks, the terrorists were staying in a hotel near NSA headquarters in Maryland, almost within sight of the office of then-NSA Director Michael Hayden. Hayden, who was later appointed director of the CIA by President Bush, was never held accountable for his agency's failure, and after 9/11 he spearheaded the Bush administration's warrantless wiretapping activities in the name of making the nation safe from terrorists.

Addressing the question, Are we any safer now than we were before?, Bamford says, "We should have been safe the way it was. NSA had all the information that it needed to stop the 9/11 hijackers. It had laws that allowed it to track the hijackers." Bamford adds that those same laws also protected the privacy of ordinary Americans in ways that have since vanished.
