Van der Sar: 7 - Made some solid stops, particularly midway through the first half, and looked dependable throughout.

Boulahrouz: 9 - Brilliant! Made several perfect challenges and gave Malouda no joy down the left hand side, or Evra, or even Ribery when he came over to that side as well. An incredible showing from the Chelsea man. Will Scolari be interested in hanging onto him now?

Ooijer: 8 - The player of the first half. Very quick to close down any French attacks and stayed tight to his man. His overcommitment occasionally almost left him exposed, but his was a performance tailor-made for the day.

Mathijsen: 5.5 - A little off the pace on the odd occasion and was caught out regularly when the French roved forward.

Van Bronckhorst: 7 - Had a stern test up against the vibrant Sidney Govou and often Franck Ribery doubling up as well, but he coped very well with a tenacious performance.

De Jong: 7 - Stuck in there to his credit, but could not impose himself on the game as he would have liked.

Engelaar: 5 - Surprisingly off-colour after a very good first game against Italy. Misplaced passes and was not as big a presence in stopping the dynamic Franck Ribery. Was substituted at half time.

Kuyt: 7.5 - Tenacious as ever playing down the right hand side. A well-taken header, in the right place at the right time from close range from a corner kick.

Van der Vaart: 7 - Smart passing as usual, not quite as expansive and marked tighter than he was against Italy.

Sneijder: 8 - Like Kuyt, worked tremendously hard down his flank, doubling up to assist van Bronckhorst on defensive duty brilliantly. Good pace when breaking forward and scored an absolute beauty in the dying seconds.

Van Nistelrooy: 8 - Moved very freely and held the ball up brilliantly for his side all over the pitch. Did not get into the box as much as he would have liked against a very disciplined French rearguard. Amazingly, he didn't score, but he showed several touches of pure class, including two 360-spins that would have made Cruyff himself proud.

Substitutes

Robben: 8.5 - A magnificent performance off the bench. His devastating pace put the French to the sword and his tight-angle blast gave the Dutch the initiative back after having just conceded.

Van Persie: 8 - Full of energy and was in the right place at the right time to thump home the second goal. An ambitious substitution that paid off.

Bouma: 6.5

France

Coupet: 5.5 - Made a couple of good stops and was powerless to stop the first and last goal. He would have done extremely well to stop the second, but ultimately should have been able to keep out the third from Robben, which went over his head at the near post.

Sagnol: 7 - Got up and down his flank to decent effect. Was better than against Romania, but did not win his duel with Sneijder in the Dutch half or his own. Provided a smart ball across goal for Henry to touch home.

Thuram: 3 - Had a nightmare and looked every one of his 36 years. Was not quick or sharp enough and was even out-muscled and caught out of position from time to time. With no Mexes to step in, it's likely he will nevertheless retain his place in the side against Italy..

Gallas: 6.5 - Was strong at the back and, unlike Thuram, had the athleticism to keep pace with the Dutch forwards. Could have done little to stop the goals that punished his side on the break.

Evra: 7 - Looked a great fit in the side. Not afforded as much offensive freedom as usual but his defensive discipline was a testament to his all-round ability as a full-back.

Govou: 7.5 - A great addition to the team down the right wing and worked tremendously hard for his side. Had a few half chances and the Dutch a number of problems.

Toulalan: 7 - Grew into the game and was solid defensively, also playing neat and tidy passes throughout. Became overrun towards the end of the game.

Makelele: 6 - Made some horrible challenges but otherwise played quite well, full of energy and not allowing the Dutch too much freedom. Did not give up until the end.

Ribery: 7 - Lively and full of running but too selfish at crucial moments. Has not yet provided the magic spark he did for Bayern this season.

Malouda: 5 - Barring a few moments where he showed the skill we all know him to have, Malouda had a poor game. He gave the ball away far too often and was not incisive enough with his running or passing.

Henry: 6.5 - Some good movement but ultimately was kept out of the game for far too long, which is hardly his own fault. Had a big miss with the score at 1-0, but did pull back a smart goal to make it 2-1, only for the Dutch to add another less than a minute later.

Brilliant Dutch thrash France to qualify

(CNN) -- Netherlands thrashed France 4-1 in the match of the tournament so far in Berne to secure their place in the quarterfinals by finishing top of Group C.
art.dutch.gi.jpg

Dirk Kuyt (right) celebrates his opening goal as the Dutch destroyed France 4-1 in a superb match in Berne.

France still have a chance of qualifying, but they will need to beat Italy and hope Romania fail to defeat the Dutch in their final match.

For the second time in four days the rampant Dutch produced an attacking masterclass.

Dirk Kuyt opened the scoring and Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder added others after the break as Marco van Basten's in-form team sank the French in the same way they did world champions Italy here on Monday.

Les Bleus' consolation came through Thierry Henry on his return to the team, but even their revered defense could not handle the pace of their opponents' attacks.

France meet Italy on Tuesday but they both may be eliminated if Romania, who are second in the group, defeat the Netherlands on the same night.

The Dutch, meanwhile, will now have to cope with the tag of tournament favorites after disposing of the two World Cup finalists of 2006 in sensational style, scoring seven goals in the process.

It took just eight minutes for the Dutch to carry on where they left off against the Italians. Rafael van der Vaart sent in a corner in from the right and Kuyt beat Florent Malouda in the air to head home at the near post.

France coach Raymond Domenech, who had reverted to a 4-2-3-1 formation in bringing Patrice Evra, Sidney Govou and fit-again Henry back, would have been alarmed at the defending for the goal.

The Dutch were posing all sorts of problems early on, Sneijder firing just over in the 15th minute and then Kuyt poking a shot over the bar when free in the area after he pounced on a weak Lilian Thuram header.

However, France hit back and created a host of half-chances in the final 20 minutes of the half. Their first sight of goal came when Govou's near-post effort drew an excellent save from Edwin van der Sar.

Three more opportunities fell to the French in the space of a few minutes -- Malouda, Govou and Franck Ribery all bringing decent stops out of van der Sar with low drives.

Henry curled wide from 15 meters with the last opportunity of the half but at the start of the second period, he thought he had earned his side a penalty.

Govou's driven cross-shot was deflected into his path and the Barcelona striker's goalbound effort was blocked by the hand of Andre Ooijer, but German referee Herbert Fandel only gave a corner.

Henry had an immediate chance to exact his revenge but having been put clean through in the 53rd minute by Malouda's spectacular pass, the former Arsenal skipper sent his lob way over.

His miss was punished on the hour mark when two of the Netherlands' second-half substitutes, Robben and van Persie, combined to put the Dutch further ahead.

The goal originated from some sublime skills by Ruud van Nistelrooy on the touchline and his Real Madrid team-mate Robben took the ball on.

His perfect cross from the left found van Persie, whose volley crept over the line despite the best efforts of France goalkeeper Gregory Coupet.

Henry finally got his goal in the 70th minute when he glanced home a cross from the right from Willy Sagnol but, within seconds, Robben had restored the Netherlands' two-goal cushion.

The left-winger ran onto Sneijder's through-ball down the left channel, earned himself a bit of space against Thuram and drove home a powerful drive from a narrow angle into the roof of the net.

The impressive van Nistelrooy almost got himself on the scoresheet with seven minutes left with a looped header, but it was clawed out by Coupet.

It was left for Sneijder to add the cherry on the cake, with his superb curling shot from 20 meters out giving Coupet no chance.

"We were missing a lot of things, namely scoring," Domenech said. "We had more chances, we opened them up really well.

"But we were not efficient and that has been our recurring problem for a while now. You can't do much about that," he added.

Bold Dutch rewarded as France left on brink

Orange aid: Van Persie meets a left-wing cross by Robben to score within four minutes of his arrival as a substitute (EMPICS Sport/PA Photos)

Martin Samuel, Chief Football Correspondent, Berne
A goal up against France with 45 minutes to go, most coaches would look to protect the lead. A rare few would dare to go farther and Marco van Basten, coach of Holland, is one such man. Last night he was rewarded with a convincing victory that sent his team into the quarter-finals as the first group winners of Euro 2008.

The battle for top place in the group of death, far from going to the wire, is over with a match to spare. Holland cannot be caught now and, indeed, are in such a position of strength that a full reserve team could be fielded in the final match with Romania on Tuesday. For France, and Italy, the end is nigh. If Romania beat the Dutch in that final game, the World Cup finalists of two seasons ago will exit at the first stage. Depending on news from the other group game, the match in Zurich could become a meaningless fight to avoid the wooden spoon.

Holland won convincingly here because Van Basten gambled at half-time by replacing Orlando Engelaar, the defensive midfield player, with Arjen Robben, the winger, and the coach reaped a handsome reward. Robben set up one goal, with an excellent run for his fellow substitute, Robin van Persie, to score his first goal of the tournament, and scored another with a stunning finish on the left. The fourth, in injury time, for Wesley Sneijder was the pick of the night in technique but, by then, an irrelevance. The game was over long before.

In between Robben’s interventions, Thierry Henry had given France brief hope of a revival with a goal in the 70th minute, but it was nowhere near enough. Raymond Domenech’s side knew the penalty for failure to win here and it made no difference. Their fate is in the hands of a team with nothing left to play for, Holland, and another for whom winning will be everything, Romania. That adds up to one thing, and it looks as if France and Italy can begin preparing for a summer on the beach.

If the opening fixture against Italy had been a night for the stellar talents in the Holland team, the first half here belonged to the bread-and-butter men. Edwin van der Sar, the goalkeeper, and Dirk Kuyt, the striker who has selflessly converted to an outside right for club and country, reprising his Liverpool role to great effect.

Kuyt was one of the most underrated players in the Barclays Premier League last season. Often the scapegoat when things went awry, he performed a vital and frequently thankless role in Rafael Benítez’s system, starting wide but expected to link quickly with the front man from deep, a position that is hard for defenders to monitor. It led to important goals, such as the one against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in the Champions League, and a number of nights when his contribution, though less than eye-catching, was invaluable. Equally, on occasions, his persistence went unnoticed and if Liverpool failed to win, he looked ineffectual, a goalscorer without a sniff of goal, when in truth his role was considerably more complex than that.

Played to perfection against France here, Kuyt combined the best of both worlds. His striker’s instinct secured Holland’s lead after just ten minutes, the rest of the time he worked tirelessly to stop France bringing the ball out on the left through Patrice Evra, of Manchester United. His workrate was outstanding and his team ethic impressive; he trailed Evra into Holland’s half at times, yet was quickly available to stretch the France defence if Holland broke, which they frequently did.

What Holland demonstrated last night was that they could play a variety of ways and score many ways, too. The goal that rocked France after a healthy start was a simple set-piece, impressively converted by Kuyt, even if the defence against Rafael van der Vaart’s corner was a joke.

Florent Malouda, detailed to mark Kuyt, forgot only one thing: to challenge for the ball when it arrived. Instead of making an attempt to go against his man in the air, he did that prissy wrestling thing that passes for resistance these days, grappling with him when a proper physical confrontation would have led to him putting his head where it might get hurt. Kuyt treated Malouda’s attention with the contempt it warranted and got in front of him as any instinctive goalscorer would, delivering a powerful header from close range that left Grégory Coupet, in the France goal, with no chance.

Indeed, the strength of Holland’s front players seemed to cause a constant problem for the French and in the twentieth minute, Kuyt could have put them two clear when a long ball by Giovanni van Bronckhorst was poorly dealt with by Lilian Thuram, his header almost putting the forward in again, but he shot over under pressure.

Holland’s goal had certainly taken the wind out of French sails and, despite early possession, it was not until the 22nd minute that they mounted an attack of significance. Willy Sagnol played the ball in to Sidney Govou and the Lyons forward controlled it on his chest before hitting a low shot that Van der Sar saved with his feet. The Holland goalkeeper may not be as flamboyant as some here, but he looks the best and has carried on where he left off for Manchester United, the final act of his club season being the penalty shoot-out save from Nicolas Anelka that landed the European Cup.

Now playing with more confidence, not to mention a growing desperation at their predicament, France came at Holland through the heart of midfield and three times in two minutes, Van der Sar had to be on his mettle to save, first from a shot by Malouda, then after a fantastic move involving Malouda, Franck Ribéry and Thierry Henry, which fell to Govou. Finally, Ribéry cut inside and struck a fierce shot, but Van der Sar was its equal. In the 42nd minute, Henry turned and shot from a through-ball by Claude Makelele, but the waywardness of his effort was a sign of growing France frustration.

Then, at the start of the second half, came the two events that the French will claim turned the game. In the 48th minute, a Govou shot was deflected to Henry and he let fly from close range, André Ooijer charging the ball down on its way to goal. French appeals and protests were instant and replays did show that the shot had struck Ooijer on a raised arm as he threw his body in the way, but Herbert Fandel, the German referee, was having none of it. It looked a harsh decision, even if there was no deliberate attempt to play the ball illegally by Ooijer. No flint-hearted official to blame for France’s next moment of misfortune, however, a good scoring chance for Henry, left one on one with Van der Sar only to lob over. Had they gone in, it could have been very different. Instead, the fate of France is no longer in French hands. Allez, oops.
