Barton arrested in assault probe
Newcastle and England midfielder Joey Barton has been arrested by police in Liverpool following an alleged assault.
The footballer was arrested along with a 19-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman on Church Street in the city centre at 0530 GMT.
Merseyside Police confirmed the three were being held in custody.
A spokesman said: "All three remain in custody for interview and processing and I expect a decision on charges or release will be made later tonight."

Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor
Gordon Taylor has called for greater respect between players
Players' union boss Gordon Taylor is concerned over a recent apparent upturn in the number of two-footed tackles.
Chelsea's Ricardo Carvalho and Brynjar Gunnarsson of Reading were sent off on Boxing Day, the latest in a spate of red cards for two-footed challenges.
And chief executive Taylor says the Professional Footballers' Association wants those kind of tackles eradicated to protect skilled players from injury.
"You have to protect skilful players first and foremost," said Taylor.
"The only way the game is going to survive is not through a 'Rollerball' or ice hockey type of 'crash, bang, wallop'.
"We have to show a concern for the health and safety of players.
"I'm worried about it because if you get that tackle on the standing leg then it is a danger. We lose 50 players a year with permanent injury."
Taylor believes that recent tackles show a lack of respect between players, and he has called for captains to have a greater role in preventing wild tackles by communicating with referees before and during games.
"There needs to be a respect between fellow professionals and for the opposition," he said.
A player who jumps into a tackle two-footed is not in control of himself
Professional Game Match Officials spokesman
"We know the game has got faster and it's even faster in this country.
"The FA are having a respect campaign for referees and we want referees to make better use of captains - to make it clear to them certain things they are not going to stand for and for him to tell his team."
Despite a recent increase in red cards for two-footed challenges, the Professional Game Match Officials Board, which represents referees, insist they are merely enforcing existing policy.
"There has been no 'clampdown' on the tackle or new directive issued," said a PGMO spokesman.
"Referees are simply applying the law as it has always stood."
Stephen Ireland
Stephen Ireland was sent off by Mark Halsey against Tottenham
Carvalho and Gunnarsson are just two Premier League players who have recently been given their marching orders for two-footed challenges.
Others include:
* Robbie Keane's late tackle on Birmingham's Fabrice Muamba on 2 December.
* Stephen Ireland's two-footed lunge on Tottenham's Young-Pyo Lee on 9 December.
* Didier Zokora's two-footed tackle on Manchester City's Elano on 18 December.
* Peter Crouch's two-footed lunge on Chelsea's Jon Mikel Obi on 19 December.
But despite the rise in red cards for such tackles this month, the PGMO spokesman denied that officials had been ordered to change their approach to such incidents.
The spokesman added: "The issue of the two-footed challenges was discussed at the regular pre-season meetings the PGMO holds with managers and players.
"They were reminded of the key point surrounding the excessive use of force in the tackle.
"A player who jumps into a tackle two-footed is not in control of himself and therefore if he makes contact with the player, ball and player, or if the referee determines there to be excessive malice in the challenge, he will be dismissed."

Hodgson has plenty of coaching and managerial experience
Fulham have announced the appointment of Roy Hodgson as their new manager on a "long-term" contract.
He will take over on 30 December, with caretaker boss Ray Lewington remaining in charge for Saturday's away game against Birmingham City.
Fulham sacked Lawrie Sanchez last week with the club in the Premier League's bottom three.
"I am determined that we will overcome the current position," Hodgson, 60, told the club's official website.
"I understand that it will be a challenge, but one that I will relish."
Fulham's new manager will be at their game at St. Andrews on Saturday before taking training with the Craven Cottage squad on Sunday.
His first game in charge will be the local derby at home against Chelsea on New Year's Day as he tries to arrest a dramatic slump in form for the Cottagers.
Fulham's last league win came on 3 November against Reading and they have since lost five of their seven top-flight games, including their 5-1 thrashing by Tottenham last time out.
"After long talks with the chairman and the board I am convinced that we can take the Club to a new level," said Hodgson.
He made an inauspicious start to his managerial career when he was sacked after a short stint with Bristol City.
But he led Malmo to five consecutive championships and two Swedish Cups and then guided the Swiss national team to the 1994 World Cup finals and Euro 96.
He went on to manage Inter Milan and Blackburn Rovers, among others, before taking over as Finland coach and narrowly missed out on taking them to Euro 2008.
Hodgson's stint in charge of Blackburn ended with him being sacked in November 1998 with the club bottom of the Premier League.
But he has a vast amount of experience and success across Europe and is the experienced boss Fulham wanted to guide them away from relegation.
Former Fulham midfielder John Collins, who recently resigned as Hibernian manager, had been linked with the post after resigning his job with Scottish Premier League Hibernian.
But it proved to be no more than speculation and Hodgson will be unveiled by Fulham at a news conference on Monday.
"It is my vision to combine the best of the fantastic traditions of the English Premier League with the flair and innate professionalism of the continental game, which I hope will return Fulham to its tradition of playing attractive passing football," said club chairman Mohamed Al Fayed.
"I believe that Roy has immense experience in all areas of football and can drive this club forward for the long term.
"My commitment to this club has never dwindled and I am more than ever determined that we have the right man to turn round our current predicament and build for a successful future."
