Taiwan - (AP) -- Diegomar Markwell pitched six-plus innings of five-hit baseball Wednesday to help the Netherlands post a 2-1 upset victory over Cuba in a Group B game of the Baseball World Cup.

The defeat was Cuba's first in World Cup Baseball since it lost to Japan in November 2001.

Dirk van't Klooster and Sharnol Adriana had an RBI each in the win that ensured the Dutch team a place in the Nov. 16 quarterfinals. Other Group B quarterfinals entrants include Cuba and Australia.

In other Group B play Wednesday, South Korea overwhelmed Germany 8-1, while Mexico demolished Italy 11-2 in Group A.

Kei Nomoto drove in one run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Japan a 4-3 victory over Spain and a place in the quarterfinals from Group A. Japan joins host Taiwan and the United States in the final eight.

Later Wednesday, the U.S. beat Taiwan 10-7 and Panama destroyed South Africa 13-3 in Group A, while in Group B, Australia edged Canada 7-6, and Venezuela demolished Thailand 17-3.

Ruggiano's HRs lead U.S. past Taiwan at world cup

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Justin Ruggiano hit a tie-breaking, three-run homer in the seventh inning and added a solo home run in the ninth to lead the United States to a 10- 7 win over Taiwan on Wednesday and the top seed in the World Cup quarterfinals.

The U.S. team finished 6-1 in group play, and takes on South Korea on Friday in an opening quarterfinal game.

Ruggiano finished with three hits, five RBIs, two runs scored and a walk, while Evan Longoria was 3-for-5 with a home run.

Taiwan scored a run in the ninth inning and had the bases loaded before U.S. manager Davey Johnson brought on reliever Chris Booker to record the final two outs. Starter Josh Outman went the first five innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits with eight strikeouts.

Also Wednesday, the Netherlands surprised Cuba 2-1 -- the Cubans first loss in the World Cup since 2001 -- and advanced to the quarterfinals.

Verrassende winst Oranje op Cuba



Nederland heeft op het WK in Taiwan voor een daverende verrassing gezorgd met een memorabele zege op titelhouder Cuba. Oranje won met 2-1 en plaatste zich met de overwinning in de laatste groepswedstrijd voor de kwartfinales.

De ploeg van bondscoach Robert Eenhoorn schreef met de zege geschiedenis, want Oranje won nooit eerder van Cuba op een WK. Cuba, dat na zes overwinningen op rij al zeker was de kwartfinales, leed eind 2001 voor het laatst een nederlaag op het WK. Toen was Japan met 5-3 te sterk.

Oranje baarde dinsdag ook al opzien bij het WK met een schitterende 5-1 zege op Zuid-Korea dat in 2005 in de finale het onderspit delfde tegen de Cubanen.

Voorsprong
Nederland kwam tegen Cuba al in de tweede inning op voorsprong. Dirk van 't Klooster stelde Sidney de Jong vanaf het tweede honk in staat om te scoren.

Startende werper Diego Markwell hield zich daarna uitstekend staande bij het Cubaanse aanvalsgeweld. Hij stond in de eerste vijf innings slecht één honkslag toe. In de zevende inning kwam Cuba via Urrutia langszij. Met David Bergman op de heuvel werden de Cubanen afgestopt, waarna Raily Legito, op een lage bal van Sharnol Adriana, Oranje op 2-1 zette.

In de laatste slagbeurt van Cuba wist Nederland onder leiding van Bergman de kostbare 2-1 vast te houden.
