Filming is underway for Series Four of Doctor Who, with Catherine Tate reprising her role as Donna, the runaway bride featured in last year's Christmas Special.

The start of the new series will see Donna tracking down the Time Lord during an alien emergency in modern-day London. The couple are destined to experience a series of wonderful adventures throughout the new series including meeting one of Doctor Who's most popular aliens, The Ood in a brand new episode, Planet of The Ood.

Catherine Tate said: "I am delighted to be returning to Doctor Who. I had a blast last Christmas and look forward to travelling again through time and space with that nice man from Gallifrey."

Donna and The Doctor will also be travelling through time for an encounter with the legendary murder mystery novelist, Agatha Christie, played by Jekyll star Fenella Woolgar. Fenella will be joined by The Good Life actress Felicity Kendal, who will star as Lady Clemency Eddison.

"What a brilliant idea that Agatha Christie and Doctor Who should meet!," noted Matthew Prichard, Agatha Christie's grandson. "Two characters whose contribution to British entertainment is absolutely unrivalled. As far as I know my grandmother, Agatha Christie, never saw Doctor Who, but I am sure she would have been intrigued, excited and above all flattered by all this attention in 2007."

Doctor Who's executive producer and head writer, Russell T Davies comments: "Visiting Agatha Christie has been on my wish-list for ages now, and for the Doctor, it's a real meeting of minds! Viewers can expect many more ambitious storylines and a whole host of guest stars in 2008."

Blackadder and Notting Hill Actor Tim McInnerny will also guest star later in the series.

Freema Agyeman who has played Martha Jones, The Doctor's companion throughout the critically acclaimed third series will return to the show to join The Doctor and Donna mid series.

Donna Noble may have stood out from the crowd in her Runaway Bride wedding dress, but she's determined to blend in when the TARDIS makes a date with Agatha Christie during the 1920s.

Although David Tennant's Doctor remained in his timeless pin-striped brown suit for the adventure, Donna (played by Catherine Tate) chose this classy 'flapper' style period costume for the occasion.

With filming now complete on the period piece, David and Catherine are preparing to visit the Planet of the Ood - with presumably another costume change planned.

Both episodes are being produced by Susie Liggat, who previously took charge of the Human Nature / The Family Of Blood two-parter during Series 3.

David Tennant's appearance in the fifth series of Doctor Who looks uncertain after it was revealed there will be no new series in 2009.

The fourth series, starring Tennant, is due to hit TV screens next year, but the fifth will not be seen until 2010.

Instead, Tennant, will star in three Doctor Who specials, written by Russell T Davies, on BBC One in 2009.

A spokeswoman for Doctor Who said she was unable to comment whether Tennant would return for the 2010 series.

Tennant, 36, will reportedly play Hamlet with the Royal Shakespeare Company from July to November next year, but this has not been confirmed by the RSC.

'Best loved'

Series four, which went into production in July, will hit UK screens in spring 2008 with a special episode scheduled for Christmas 2008.

Comedian Catherine Tate is set to return to the Tardis for the complete 13-week run, reprising her role as Donna from the 2006 Christmas special.

Actress Freema Agyeman, who won praise for her portrayal of assistant Martha Jones, is also set to return during series four.

BBC Fiction controller Jane Tranter said: "Doctor Who is one of the BBC's best loved and most successful dramas.

"Its journey over the past three series has been one of the most ambitious and exciting that we have had, and I'm delighted to be able to confirm not only three exciting specials for 2009, but a fifth series in 2010. "

Menna Richards, controller of BBC Wales, said: "This announcement is marvellous news for all involved, and more importantly for the programme's amazing fan base and audience."

Doctor faces Sontarans once again

The new series will be screened in the UK next spring

A group of Doctor Who's enemies - the Sontarans - will be revived, 35 years after first appearing in the BBC drama.
The warriors will feature in an episode which will also mark the return of Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones.

She will run into the Doctor's new companion - Donna Noble, played by Catherine Tate - for the first time.

Another plot for the new series will be a meeting between the Doctor and Agatha Christie, and guest stars will include Felicity Kendal and Sarah Lancashire.

There will also be appearances from Tim McInnerny, who played Percy in the first two series of Blackadder and Captain Darling in the fourth.

Peter Capaldi - a fierce spin doctor in political satire The Thick of It - and Phil Davis, who appeared in Quadrophenia and Bleak House, will also be seen on the show, the BBC has confirmed.


Doctor Who won top drama at the National TV Awards on Wednesday
The series, once again starring David Tennant as the Doctor, is due to be seen in the UK next spring. Filming is under way in Cardiff.

The run will begin with Donna tracking down the Doctor during an alien emergency in modern-day London.

Martha will be back halfway through the series, once actress Agyeman has appeared in three episodes of Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood.

"Martha Jones returns in a fantastic storyline and the fans will get to see her in a whole new light," Agyeman promised.

The Sontarans were first seen on The Time Warrior, an episode of the show in 1973, when Jon Pertwee was in the lead role.

Christopher Ryan, known as Mike in 1980s TV sitcom The Young Ones, will play the head Sontaran.

And the tentacle-faced Ood will return in an episode called Planet of the Ood.

En goed hoe het nog steeds aansluit op de Christmas Special zoals we al zagen in S3. Het is alsof deze scene "er altijd al was maar niet in die aflevering is getoond".

Ik zat pas geleden The Doctor Dances te kijken, en ik vind Ecclestone's Doctor heel serieus, maar daarin juist heel luchtig, en af en toe ontsteekt er een enorme lach in zijn gezicht (en roept-ie Fantastic!). Dat is erg goed, maar Tennant is heel uitbundig, maar nooit doldwaas. Nu ook weer met Davison: hij is enthousiast, maar houdt vervolgens zijn kop om de ander na te laten denken terwijl hij staat te glunderen. En als-ie dan een idee heeft springt-ie heen en weer en alles wat-ie ontdekt vindt-ie prachtig.

Daarin vind ik Tennant's Doctor echt m'n favoriet.

Weet je wat me een keer leuk lijkt? Als een opvolger voor Tennant een half seizoen eerder al een gastrol krijgt in een aflevering met 2 Doctors. Dus, stel, James Nesbitt zou vanaf S5 the Doctor zijn, ik noem maar wat, dan zou halverwege seizoen 4 Tennant Nesbitt tegenkomen. En vanaf dat punt natuurlijk een 2-Doctorverhaal, maar met het verschil dat je als publiek (en als Doctor) die andere Doctor nog helemaal niet kent, omdat het de *volgende* incarnatie is, in plaats van een van de vorige.

Ik ben benieuwd wat voor verhaal je daarvan zou kunnen maken.

Doctor Who has scooped a prestigious Writers' Guild of Great Britain Award for the Best TV Series beating Life on Mars and New Tricks.

In the presentation on Sunday 19th November, Series Three of the BBC One Drama was named Best TV Series. Gareth Roberts and Steven Moffat were in attendance to collect the award on behalf of the Series Three writing team which also included Russell T Davies, Chris Chibnall, Helen Raynor and Stephen Greenhorn.

"It's a particular honour to receive an award from our peers in the writing community," said Gareth Roberts, writer of The Shakespeare Code. "We're all surprised and delighted, and looking forward to bringing more Doctor Who to BBC One in 2008."

Steven Moffat, writer of Blink, said he was "Absolutely thrilled to be part of the winning Doctor Who writing team. Writing for Doctor Who has been my dream since I was seven years old - now that I've got an award for it, maybe I can get a girlfriend.

"That would make my Mum happy as she's keen for me to move out. Just amazing, though to see this grand, mad old show take on huge, wonderful hits like Life On Mars and New Tricks and stroll off home with the gong."
