Adam komt van een joods gezin en zijn ouders heten Stanley en Judy. Zijn eerste ervaring met comedy was toen hij ging optreden in de Boston Comedian Club. Hij ontdekte dat het hem goed afging en ging steeds meer optreden. Ondertussen was hij ook een student bij de New York University. Hij studeerde daar af in 1991.

Adam wist een kleine rol te bemachtigen bij de The Cosby Show in 1987. Ondertussen werd hij tijdens een optreden ontdekt door Dennis Miller. Hij raadde hem vervolgens aan bij Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels. Hierdoor kreeg hij ook een rol in de show van 1991 tot en met 1995. Na Saturday Night Live, schakelde hij over naar films.
