A post-mortem examination has found that Motherwell footballer Phil O'Donnell died from heart failure.
The 35-year-old collapsed during his team's game on Saturday and was pronounced dead a short time later.
Robert Liddle, the club doctor, said: "The post-mortem revealed that Phil had suffered left ventricular failure of the heart."
It was also announced that the player's funeral service would take place in Hamilton at noon on Friday.
The Requiem Mass, in St Mary's Church, Cadzow Street, will be followed by internment at the nearby Bent Cemetery.
At the request of his wife Eileen, the church service will be for family and friends only.
Mrs O'Donnell said she had been left "devastated" by her husband's death.
Speaking publicly for the first time since he died, she said her husband had achieved much in football but "the most important thing for him was his family".
Mrs O'Donnell, mother of the couple's four children, said: "He would like to be remembered as a family man and we were all so proud of him.
"We are all devastated by what has happened.
"We hope we will now be given peace and time to grieve but we are overwhelmed by the messages of support we have received."
The player collapsed and died as he was substituted during his side's 5-3 defeat of Dundee United at Fir Park on Saturday.
Celtic manager Gordon Strachan and Rangers captain Barry Ferguson were among the figures from across the world of football who visited Fir Park to see the tributes.
The Old Firm derby between Rangers and Celtic, O'Donnell's former club, was postponed as a mark of respect for the father-of-four.

Hearts have launched a search to find a new manager as they bid to arrest their alarming decline down the Scottish Premier League table.
Assistant coach Stephen Frail and sporting director Anatoly Korobochka have been in charge this season but the club have slipped to 10th place.
While the search takes place, Frail will become caretaker manager and have full control over first-team affairs.
"The board has begun a search for a new manager," said a club statement.
"The manager, who will have full responsibility for team selection, will be an experienced football manager and will preferably have experience of management in British football.
"The new manager will work with Anatoly Korobochka and Stephen Frail."
Frail and Korobochka have led Hearts since Valdas Ivanauskas left the club in March last year.
But there has been confusion as to who is picking the team, with Frail admitting in the past to having little input in the process.
Managers John Robertson, George Burley, Graham Rix and Ivanauskas have all been and gone since the arrival of Vladimir Romanov as majority shareholder.
Hearts are now just two places and 10 points ahead of basement club Gretna.
"The board of directors of Hearts acknowledges it is not acceptable for Hearts to be in its current position in the league," added the club statement.
"The new manager's task will be to drive the club forward on the playing side to fulfil the club's ambitions."
