With all of the excitement about the iPhone, my first thoughts yesterday weren’t exactly on what the iPhone couldn’t do. But, Nokia was quick to point out a major shortcoming in the iPhone, which is the lack of 3G technology.
For those of you that don’t know, EDGE, the cellular data technology on the iPhone, is usually known as “2.75G,” as it is faster than GSM (2G) and GPRS (2.5G) networks, but slower than UTMS (3G) and HSDPA (3.5G). But why do all these acronyms matter? Well, the key is speed. While UTMS and HSDPA offer broadband speeds at up to 3.6 Mbit/s, EDGE offers only a measly 237 kbit/s. That’s about the speed or less of the very slowest DSL lines! Not exactly optimal for a part “Internet communicator device.” So why did Apple and Cingular choose to go with slow EDGE for the iPhone? Cingular is touting 3G UTMS with HSDPA phones, so it’s not like this hasn’t been done before. And, if you’re not in one of the many metropolitan areas that offer Cingular’s 3G, the phone can always revert to EDGE and GSM/GPRS. So, with all of this, why did Apple choose EDGE? To be honest, I don’t know. Maybe Apple couldn’t cram it in in time to submit the iPhone to the FCC for approval. Maybe they somehow physically couldn’t fit the 3G radio tuner into the phone. Or maybe it was just too expensive for the $499/$599 price point.
But, the point is, the lack of 3G is a major turn-off point, at least for me. Why should I take the time and effort to end my Verizon plan, switch to Cingular, and buy a $499 phone, when I can just stay on Verizon and get a Treo, Blackberry, or Motorola Q with broadband-speed EV-DO for $300+? Well, the truth is I’d still probably go to any lengths to somehow get an iPhone, but the desire becomes a little less when I don’t have a broadband-speed cellular network, even with WiFi.
