"We hebben aan UEFA-voorzitter Michel Platini gezegd dat we grote kosten hebben gehad. Hij heeft niet geweigerd." Later deze week zal Kroatië de vraag ook officieel stellen aan de UEFA.

De UEFA koos vorige week voor Polen en Oekraïne. Kroatië en Hongarije kregen geen enkele van de twaalf stemmen. Door die nederlaag ligt Markovic zwaar onder vuur, maar hij weigert op te stappen.

Runje given one-match suspension

Turkish league authorities have confirmed Beşiktaş JK goalkeeper Vedran Runje's one-match suspension after he made a provocative gesture towards Sakaryaspor supporters.

Ban served
The Croatian goalkeeper had been given a provisional ban for last weekend’s game against Antalyaspor pending a meeting of the disciplinary committee today concerning his conduct following the 1-1 draw at Sakaryaspor on 14 April. However, he will now be able to play in the second leg of his side’s Turkish Cup semi-final against Fenerbahçe SK on Thursday. In effect, he served his ban in the game against Antalyaspor. The absence of Runje and second-choice goalkeeper Murat Şahin forced Beşiktaş to field teenager Erdem Köse in the 1-0 win.

Nations jostle for Rakitic's favour

At 19 midfielder Ivan Rakitic is keeping FC Basel 1893's interest in the Swiss title alive - but a big decision over his international future is looming.

Unwelcome influence
Rakitic's two goals in last weekend's 4-2 win against FC Zürich kept Christian Gross's side in the running, with the Swiss-born player taking his total to nine goals for the campaign. His mentor in the Basel side, Mladen Petrić, has ten more but Swiss fans are hoping that the striker does not have too much influence over the youngster.

Decision looms
A Swiss-born Croat, Petrić elected to play for the Croatian rather than Switzerland, and a battle is now on between the two nations for the registration of Rakitic, who could also represent his mother's homeland Bosnia and Herzegovina. An Under-17 and U19 international with Switzerland, Rakitic has played friendlies at U21 level, but having made no competitive appearances, can still opt to play for Slaven Bilic's side.

Trademark strike
Rakitic has insisted he is "in no hurry" to decide and is adamant that he will not be appearing for either side in July's international games - but the pressure is building. Switzerland coach Jakob Kuhn watched him in the game against Zürich and would doubtless love to see him produce one of his trademark volleys in a Swiss shirt.

Pragmatic approach
Rakitic insists he will take a pragmatic approach to the decision, telling uefa.com: "I will choose the national team which I have the best chances of playing for." Few doubt he has the ability to carve out a regular first-team place for either Switzerland or Croatia, and he may soon outgrow the competition at Basel too.

Youthful promise
Discovered as a ten-year-old when his FC Möhlin-Riburg side trounced Basel's youngsters, he signed a professional contract in 2005 despite interest from Chelsea FC and Juventus. Compared by his coach to Chelsea's Frank Lampard, he saw limited first-team action at St. Jakob-Park until Zdravko Kuzmanović left for ACF Fiorentina in the winter.

'Right time'
Having addressed concerns over his pace and added 8kg to his slight frame, Rakitic's future at Basel is also uncertain, despite the club's eagerness for him to sign a two-year contract extension until 2010. "I think there is a right moment for every Swiss player to make a move abroad," he said recently. Basel will be hoping that occasion still lies a few years ahead.
