Arnie Admits Puffing on Joint

Pictures of movie muscleman Arnold Schwarzenegger puffing on a cannabis cigarette are circulating on the Internet in an attempt to derail his campaign to be Governor of California. The stills are taken from Arnie's 1977 documentary flick Pumping Iron but are unlikely to harm him as he has already admitted to smoking - and inhaling - the drug. Speaking last year Arnie said, "I did smoke a joint and I did inhale. The bottom line is that's what it was in the '70s, that's what I did. I have never touched it since." Also circulating are revealing pictures of a bare bodybuilding Arnie with a towel doing little to cover his modesty, while a naked woman sits on his shoulders. Rob Lowe Joins Arnie

Rob Lowe has agreed to become Arnold Schwarzenegger's running mate in the upcoming recall election for California Governor because he believes the action hero is a born leader. The former West Wing star joined Republican Arnie's campaign late last week, despite the fact he's a longtime Democrat. In an exclusive interview with American showbiz news program Extra, Lowe says, "Arnold will put the people above partisan politics. That's what we need right now because the state is in real trouble. He's motivating and energizing people in this state that haven't been interested in politics in many, many years. I think people want born leaders. California congressional Dems endorse Bustamante

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- California's Democratic congressional delegation on Thursday endorsed Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante's bid for governor, even as the lawmakers reiterated their opposition to the gubernatorial recall.

Schwarzenegger on abortion, gays, environment

(CNN) -- For the first time since he announced his intention to replace California Gov. Gray Davis in the upcoming recall election, actor Arnold Schwarzenegger Wednesday explained his views on a variety of topics including abortion, homosexuality, and the environment.

Sounding more like a Democrat than a Republican, the GOP candidate said in a radio interview that he is pro-choice but does not support what critics call "partial-birth" abortions, and said he agrees with parental notification for underage girls seeking abortions, unless there is abuse or other problems in the girl's family.

In a rapid-fire series of questions by radio talk show host Sean Hannity on the nationally syndicated Sean Hannity Show, Schwarzenegger, on the phone from California, said he does not support gay marriage, but does approve of some kind of domestic partnership.

"I think that gay marriage is something that should be between a man and a woman," he said, a misstatement in a rush to keep up with the staccato-like delivery of the questions.

He also supports the Brady Bill, which tightened gun control measures.

"I would also like to close the loophole of the gun shows," Schwarzenegger said, referring to the fact that people can buy weapons at such exhibitions without a background check.

Delving into issues closer to the hearts of Californians, the candidate said he does not support giving driver's licenses to illegal aliens, but he said the issue of offering them other services is not so clear.

"That is an issue with the federal government because the governor has nothing, [not] really much power over those things," Schwarzenegger said.

The actor also said he does not support the legalization of drugs, except for the medicinal use of marijuana; he is in favor of limited school vouchers; and he supports allowing schools to decide whether prayer will be part of their day.

But he came out strongly against allowing oil companies to drill off the coast of California.

"No, absolutely not, I think that we should stop the oil drilling and I think that our state government and federal government should negotiate to buy back the leases," the candidate said.

As for his economic views, Schwarzenegger said he's "fiscally conservative."

"I don't believe in spending. The first thing I would do when I go into Sacramento is put a spending cap on those politicians, because they just can't help themselves, they're addicts, they should go to an addiction place because it's ridiculous to spend money they don't have," he said.

The candidate said he would be willing to take a pledge stating that barring any state emergencies, he would not raise taxes on California residents.

One of Schwarzenegger's top advisers, former Secretary of State George Shultz, told CNN Wednesday that tax cuts are a top priority of the Schwarzenegger team, "but we're a long ways from there."

"The first thing we have to do is get the operating budget under control and start getting the debts paid off," Shultz said from Palo Alto, California.

California gubernatorial candidate Tom McClintock criticized fellow Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger for not completely ruling out raising taxes.
"If you can get the spending under control and you get California's costs under control by reforming the workman's compensation system and other such things, then the California economy starts to move forward, and it starts to generate a lot of revenue with the current tax system," Shultz added.

Of his fellow 134 candidates in the October 7 election, Schwarzenegger only talked about Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, saying the lieutenant governor is the same as incumbent Davis.

"It's the same mold," he said.

Davis, Schwarzenegger leading pack in campaign fund raising

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Gov. Gray Davis is topping the field of candidates in the recall campaign money chase with challenger Arnold Schwarzenegger close behind, campaign finance records show.

But "it won't be this one that's coming up," the Republican congressman said on CNN's "Late Edition." The CBA debate is scheduled for the third week in September.

California Democratic Party Chairman Art Torres accused Schwarzenegger of "ducking the debates because he's not prepared.

"Every time he's asked questions, he uses the old Reagan trick -- 'Oh, I can't hear you' or 'Oh, I don't know' or 'I don't remember.' At some point, that's going to catch up to him," Torres said on "Late Edition."

Bustamante tried Sunday to link Schwarzenegger's views on immigration issues to those of former Gov. Pete Wilson, which were unpopular among California's large Latino population.

Wilson, who served as governor from 1991 to 1999, faced a budget crisis similar to the one that has threatened to cut short Davis' term in office.

Allowing the tribes to recommend board members creates potential questions of conflicts of interest and undermines the board's credibility, Schwarzenegger said Saturday.

"This is yet another example of Davis putting his own political interest ahead of the public interest," Schwarzenegger said. "I oppose this decision and I call upon Governor Davis to immediately reconsider and reverse it."

Davis has accepted nearly $2 million from casino-owning tribes since his 1998 run for governor but has received none from them since the recall began, his campaign staff said.

FRESNO, California (AP) -- Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger swept through the hometown of leading rival Cruz Bustamante in an attempt to broaden his appeal in the state's Republican heartland, while both recall replacement candidates fended off criticism for ties to controversial groups.

Schwarzenegger was called on by the League of United Latin American Citizens, the nation's oldest Hispanic civil rights group, to resign from the advisory board of U.S. English, which seeks to make English the official language of the United States. The Austrian-born actor refused.

Meanwhile Bustamante, the state's Democratic lieutenant governor, shrugged off criticism of his affiliation in the 1970s with Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan, or MeCHA, a Chicano student activist group. The state's highest ranking Hispanic, instead, pounced on an issue dear to his constituents -- gasoline prices.

Schwarzenegger was stumping Thursday in Hispanic-heavy Central Valley, Bustamante's home territory, when the league challenged him to step down from U.S. English.

"So many of us support bilingualism and bilingual education and maintaining our culture and he's essentially saying it's not valid by being part of this board that has got this whole anti-immigrant, underlying racist mentality," said the league's Gabriela Lemus.

The league said it is not taking a position on whether Gov. Gray Davis should be recalled and will not endorse a replacement candidate.

Said Schwarzenegger spokesman Sean Walsh: "Arnold Schwarzenegger came to this country with a few dollars in his pocket and not speaking the English language, and he realized the importance of learning to speak English as quickly as possible to achieve your American dreams."

Bustamante, who leads Schwarzenegger in the latest polls, compared today's members of MeCHA to those when he was a student at California State University, Fresno. Critics claim the group holds extreme separatist positions, including the belief that much of the Southwest rightfully belongs to Mexico.

"The students who are MeCHA today are just like the students when I was there," Bustamante said. "Pretty much they are trying to get an education. Most of the friends I went to school with are now either graduates from college or raising families."

Gasoline prices
Bustamante devoted much of his energy Thursday reminding voters they will be paying the highest gasoline prices over the Labor Day weekend. He accused the oil companies of price-gouging and vowed to bring the industry under state regulatory control.

"Californians are being gouged," Bustamante said, "and under current law we are powerless to do anything about it."

Ueberroth told about 75 people that if elected he would convene a special legislative session on his first day in office to address the state's budget problems and would ask lawmakers to place a measure on the March ballot asking voters for a constitutional amendment to impose spending caps. The spending limits would be tied to inflation and population changes.

"I'm going to be a mad dog chasing a meat truck to make sure we get spending in line and get jobs back in the state," he said.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign to become Governor of California has hit another stumbling block - he's been labeled a supporter of South Africa's crumbled apartheid system. According to journalist Matt Drudge, American network ABC has scrapped a taped interview with Rick Wayne, a bodybuilding friend of Schwarzenegger's, in which he claims the Terminator star made racist comments. Drudge claims two weeks ago Wayne gave ABC News an interview the network "deemed too hot to touch" - in which he "accused Arnold Schwarzenegger of some very serious things". Wayne reportedly revealed Schwarzenegger made a disparaging prediction during the 1980s about what would happen to South Africa if blacks took over the government. The actor is said to have stated, "If you give these blacks a country to run, they would run it down the tubes." A spokesman for Schwarzenegger's campaign has since told Drudge the actor's "memory was fuzzy" about the episode. Just days ago, California's San Jose Mercury News carried similar quotes from the friend, who is African-American. The publication reported, "Wayne said Schwarzenegger defended the apartheid system and argued that white South Africans could not turn power over to black South Africans without ruining the nation." Wayne told the paper, "At the time, I just thought he was an out-and-out racist." Wayne also told the News that "he watched Schwarzenegger upset Jewish friend Joe Weider to the point of tears with his crass jokes, which included doing an impression of (Adolf) Hitler". But Wayne said he later came to accept the remarks as part of Austrian-born Schwarzenegger's sense of humor. He explained, "Today I don't necessarily think he's a racist. How are you a racist and have a black guy as your friend?"
