To begin, let's go back to 1995, when I saw REM for the first time in
Belgium (Torhout festival). I was 17, and I didn't have a ticket for the
festival, which was sold out. On the day the festival started I took all my
money, got on a train (wothout my parents knowing it) and took off to
Belgium. When I arrived someone offered me a ticket, 3 times the normal
price. I bought it, because I HAD to see REM. Only seconds after this,
suddenly police appeared out of nowhere: on foot, on horses and by car. They
arrested all people who were dealing tickets. I was so lucky that I had just
bought one, if I would have arrived a minute later, I'm not sure I could
have gotten a ticket.
So I was in. I fought my way to the very first row and stayed there all day.
Hundreds of crowd surfers put their shoes in my neck during bands like
Therapy? and Offspring. I liked those shows, hated the boots in my neck, but
everything was worth waiting for REM. And then they finally came on stage.
It was *pure magic*. I never ever saw a concert like that before that night,
and I never ever saw one like it after that show. And I saw hundreds and
hundreds of bands on countless shows and festivals in my 25 years on this
planet (a small list until 1999 is on
http://www.osdorp-posse.nl/content/kirsten.htm). 8 years later I can't
remember all the songs they played back then, but what remains is the
feeling of that night. It was unbelievable. I remember looking over my
shoulder (and no, I did not see a piano falling, crashing on the ground) and
seeing the ENTIRE public jumping up and down on 'It's the end of the world'.
I remember Michael Stipe who seemed to look eveerybody in the eyes
personally the whole show. I remember energy, tons and tons of energy. And I
remember being so extremely happy.... The atmosphere was just unbelievable.
Later that year I had tickets to both cancelled shows in Holland. Argh!
And then, 2003... REM comes to Holland... TWICE! 8 years older but still a
fan... of course... but.. too late for tickets to Utrecht. When I came home
on the day the show was announced AND the ticket sales had started, it was
already sold out. Desperately I got on the internet to find tickets, and a
friend of me happened to have two of them! So I had tickets... And saturday
finally, I saw REM again....
... and I was a bit disappointed! The sound was great, Michael voice was
great (a little story on that in a minute), but there was no atmosphere at
all strangely enough and the songs were not exactly my favorites. They were
mostly slow songs which was even worse for the atmosphere in Tivoli, since
everybody was just standing absolutely still! It took over an hour to get
some people moving!!! Of course hits like Losing my religion, Everybody
hurts, The One I love and Man on the moon were played (with man on the moon
being received greatly!), but loads of other songs were as mentioned a bit
slow (welcome to the occupation, all the way to reno). However, it was ok,
and I was happy to have seen REM once again. On the way back home I realised
that 'the great beyond', a song that I had never really noticed before was
stuck in my head. Oh... I almost forgot! My little anecdote: Michael talked
to me!!! When he asked somewhere in the show if the sound was ok,
everybody yelled YES and clapped. After that, he asked: how is my voice? And
as a joke I waved my hand with a big grin on my face in a way that said
'it's barely ok". So he pointed at me and said 'fuck off' (luckily he smiled
when saying it). Finally, after more then 10 years of being a fan he spoke
to me. Nice words
The day after. REM played in the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. I didn't
have tickets. I didn't plan on going there. But 'the great beyond' was still
in my head and doubt came into mind. After a whole day in doubt, it was
18.15 when I finally decided to get in the car, and drive to Amsterdam. The
same guy I had the tickets to Utrecht from, got tickets for this concert as
well. So I picked him up and we went there. WHAT WAS I THINKING BY NOT
WANTING TO GO IN THE FIRST PLACE?!?!?! Somewhere in the last 8 years
something was messed up in my mind I guess...
Anyhew, I went. And I am SO happy that I did! The show was completely
different from Utrecht. The beginning alone was great: Finest Worksong! 6
other songs followed that were up tempo, and in my favorite REM songs list.
Even these days was playec, one of my alltime favorites. Again, 'the great
beyond' was played, and it is still in my head now. Can't get it out
anymore. The atmosphere was much better, the sound was almost as good as
the day before, the stage looked great and Michael was in his element on
this bigger stage. I jumped almost the entire show and I felt much, much
better than the day before. Walk unafraid which they had also played
saturday, finally clicked in my head as well. From being just a song, it
became a personal hit to me. They could have left Linda Hopper out (stupid
same joke as the day before, come on!), but apart from that, THIS was the
REM I love.
It was not as good as in 1995, nothing will ever be that good I'm afraid,
but at least it came close.

Helaas is 't alweer afgelopen 
. Wat een feestje gisteren in de HMH zeg. Schittend begin met Finest Worksong, schitterende opening van 'Walk unafraid', met alleen dat zware orgelaccoord achter Michael. En hevig ontroerd bij Country Feedback. Ik was 4 jaar geleden in London, en daar speelden ze dat nummer toen niet. Balen! Wel weer Find the River, en die heb ik deze keer weer niet gehoord. Goeie setlist wel, vonnik.
Iemand ook opgevallen hoe politiek de setlist was? Exhuming McCarthy, I Believe, These Days, Man on the Moon, Cuyahoga, People have the Power, etc...
Helaas is't afgelopen... heb wel een t-shirt gescoord

Bad Day vond ik in ieder geval een erg goed nummer

Afgelopen zaterdag in Wiesbaden geweest. Ook een erg mooie buitenlocatie. Stipe vertelde dat er opnames werden gemaakt voor een 'feature lenght film'. Stonden erg veel camera's en het was een erg goede show, dus ben benieuwd naar de film/dvd.

We are filming tomorrow night's show for some sort of future use and happy to be working with Julia Knowles, the capable and talented British director who filmed the band in the square in Cologne for MTV Europe a couple of years ago. So that should be fun, and it will be good to capture the whole thing on film in a setting like the Bowling Green, a classic, European public space.
In dat verslag staat ook dat ze zeker terugkomen naar Belfast!

RADIOHEAD AT R.E.M. SHOW IN VANCOUVER [30-08-2003]Before tonight's show at the Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver, Radiohead were already out there enjoying the R.E.M. show last night. The band walked out on the field before the show started and watched the show from there. Michael Stipe dedicated 'Orange Crush' to Radiohead. After mentioning Radiohead again later in the set, the bass line of Radiohead's 'The National Anthem' was played twice. Michael Stipe said he was going to be there at tonight's show.
During the last two songs two songs Thom Yorke joined R.E.M. on stage. Thom joined Michael Stipe on vocals with 'E-bow the letter'. Thom previously performed this song with R.E.M. at the Tibetan Freedom Concert. For the last song of the set, 'It's the end of the world' Thom was still on the stage doing vocals and even later he took over Peter Buck's guitar and played with the band. It was an amazing performance with Thom joking, dancing and singing on stage.
Just a note: Last time Thom sang with R.E.M. on stage, Michael Stipe joined Radiohead with their perfomance (vocals on Lucky)... Will it happen again tonight? We'll see. Seeya there
