Open your Hotmail in FireFox using MSN Messenger
A while back I blogged about switching to FireFox but that I was a little disappointed that MSN Messenger did not use your default browser when linking to Hotmail. Well I came across a utility that will use FireFox (so there is hope) but some might not like it.
StuffPlug is a plug-in for MSN Messenger Plus! so you must also have Messenger Plus! running. It's not that big a deal for me because I use Messenger Plus! But for other's this might not be worth it. To me, some of the extras it adds on; e.g. user status change notifications, hide MS ad banner, of course the sounds ;^P, can be neat.
MSN Messenger Plus! is considered adware (See Update below) by applications because there is an optional sponsorship program that you can opt into during the installation. If you opt in (and I don’t know why you would) then it will install some search engine junk, but if you opt out it will not install any of it. (See update below) Pay extra attention during the install and be sure to "NOT participate" in the sponsor ship program.
So, If you want Messenger to use FireFox do the following:
1.
Dload and install MSN Messenger Plus! (Note: The "Allow Messenger Plus! to load plugins in my account" must be enabled in order for StuffPlug to work. It is enabled by default)
2.
Dload and install StuffPlug .
3.
Select the "Open Hotmail Inbox in default browser"
FWIW, I ran SpyBot and AdAware before and after the install and neither programs reported nothing new.
The good thing is that you can open your Hotmail in FireFox using Messenger. The bad thing is that it takes 2 other programs to accomplish it. Look at the bright side though, you can send an audio "Muhahaha Muhahaha" to your coworkers now
. I'm sure in time and with the popularity of FireFox gaining there will be a more simple way coming soon! I'll blog it if hear about it.
If anyone else has any other way of achieving this I'd love to hear it.
