Season 1 :: Episode 104 :: Just Say No
Directed by: Steve Gomer
Written by: Tom Garrigus
Logline: Joan’s yard sale forces Helen to confront a painful episode in her own past.
As she’s introduced to her conniving but charming classmate Clay Fisher, Joan is told by God to have a yard sale on Saturday. And after avoiding her mother in order to gather up items for the sale, Joan heads for the garage where she and Luke come across a series of fractured self-portraits that Helen admits to painting, but adamantly refuses to discuss. Meanwhile, after his dad’s interview with Arcadia Herald City Editor Rebecca Askew serendipitously lands Kevin a job at the paper, Will’s review of the case file from Sara Bonner’s rape suggests that some seemingly benign breathalyzer results could make a conviction very difficult to win – a fact that doesn’t sit well with the impatient and grieving victim.
When she’s summoned to the office from her chemistry class, Joan finds that it is part of a scam Clay concocted so he could ask her out on a date. Though she already has plans, Joan agrees to meet on Saturday. But after God reminds her of her prior commitment, she’s forced to ask Clay to meet her at the yard sale instead. Meanwhile, despite Will’s pleas, Helen refuses to discuss the portraits, which she painted in response to being raped in her college dorm room. And after Kevin accidentally overhears Rebecca say he got the job because of his disability, she uses her own problems as an affirmative action hire to illustrate that life isn’t always easy.
After dismissing Helen’s warnings about Clay, Joan learns that he walked away from the yard sale with her dad’s badge. So when told that he’s using it to extort money from frightened students, she demands that he give it back as she realizes that her mom was right about him after all. Following an interview that convinces Will of rape suspect Todd Bainbridge’s guilt, Detective Daghlia takes responsibility for the test results that could get the case thrown out. But when Daghlia alters the report before sending it to the D.A., Will dismisses him from the force -- even after being reminded of how he once did something similar himself. Finally, after God tells Joan that she needs to be more open with her mom, Helen gives in and tells her the truth about her rape.
