Dat valt dus best wel mee, iemand op Reddit heeft de grid daarop ontleed en die info leert dat het grootste deel van de coureurs gewoon werkende ouders hebben.
Vaak ouders met een goede baan/eigen bedrijf die de start van de carriere van hun zoon hebben kunnen bekostigen, maar absoluut niet de financiële mogelijkheden om een F1 stoeltje te kopen (wat vermogende familie's wel kunnen).
Kijkend naar de laatste wereldkampioenen valt op dat Hamilton, Vettel, Button, Raikkonen, Alonso, Schumacher en Hakkinen allemaal uit Europese-middenklasse gezinnen komen. Villeneuve en Hill hebben race-vaders en de laatste twee wereldkampioenen die uit een vermogende familie kwamen waren Senna en Prost.

• Sebastian Vettel's dad was a carpenter. RBR backed him since age 11
• Kimi's dad was a road builder, sometimes worked two or three jobs, drove taxi and was a doorman; mom was a secretary
• Stoffel Vandoorne's dad was an architect, designed a cafe at a kart track which led him to enter karting. The kart owner put him in a mini kart. He couldn't race earlier than he did because of low cash. Found sponsors and went to be runner up in Karting championship. Again didn't have sponsors to enter single seater racing(financial crisis at the time). End of 2009 he won a competition organised by the Royal Automobile Club Belgium. The prize was to fund a drive in F4 Eurocup 1.6 in 2010. Won the championship and used that money to pay for Formula Renault 2.0 in 2011. Joined Mclaren in 2013
• Valtteri Bottas's dad runs a small cleaning company and his mom is an undertaker. His parents funded his karting career. Welding company Kemppi has been his backer from 2007-2015. They funded his entry into single seater racing
• Nico Hulkenberg's dad has a shipping company-Hülkenberg Transporte GmbH, hulk trained as a shipping clerk and worked for his dad as a teenager
• Romain Grosjean's dad is a lawyer, owns a firm and junior slalom skier; mom is Marie-Helene Brandt who is a successful painter. Her grandfather was weapons designer, gallery owner, artist and founder of Brandt, Edgar Brandt. Grosjean's grandfather was 1950 Giant Slalom skiing second place finisher Fernand Grosjean
• Felipe Nasr's dad with his uncle(competed in the British Formula Ford series in the '80s) ran a F3 racing team. The sponsors for their team and his family backed his career. Interestingly I just found out he's of Lebanese decent through his dad
• Felipe Massa's dad is a former touring car driver. Grandfather was involved in organizing motorsport in interlagos. His single seater career pre f1 was backed by Riccardo Tedeschi.
• Sergio Perez's dad was a racing driver(won National Malboro Cup in '87), entrepreneur in car racing, works to get funding for national and international races, ran for local office. That's how they established the Carlos slim contact which led to Perez moving to the states when he was 14 to climb up the ladder
• Esteban Gutiérrez's dad is a successful business man in mexico. He's had backing by carlos slim too
• Rio Haryanto's dad was a local racer(so are his brothers), owns Indonesia's biggest stationary business-PT. Pure Solo Murni/KIKY which was his sponsor
• Pascal Wehrlein's dad is co-owner of Jurgen Dangel & Richard Wehrlein Ohg, a medium sized parts producer using CNC Machining
• Daniil Kvyat's dad was a politician, economist. Head of the Supervisory Council of the Prometey plant, a publicly-held corporation in Boryspil. Independent deputy. Multi-mandate electoral district, elected from the Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine. Interestingly Kvyat went off to live in Rome at age 12 to build his career and is fluent in spanish and italian. Gained RBR backing at age 15
• Daniel Ricciardo's dad was founder of GR Engineering Services(company that is publicly listed) and director of Mineral Resources(Earth moving company). Quiet well off and funded his career including some of his single seater drives till RBR took him in '08.
• Nico Rosberg's dad is Keke Rosberg 1982 WDC
• Carlos Sainz Jr's dad Carlos Sainz is two time world rally champion(1990,1992). Became RBR junior in 2009 at age 15
• Max Verstappen's dad is Jos Verstappen, former F1 driver. Joined RBR in 2014 Jenson Button's dad John Button was rallycross driver
• Kevin Magnussen, son of Jan who has raced in CART, NASCAR, F1 and Le Mans. Kevin did work as a welder in a factory briefly when he didn't have a drive. He said in some interview that his dad was bad with finances. His dad funded his karting career. In 2008 he had no money so he went to work in a factory. Found a sponsor in 2009 and later became a McLaren junior
• Lewis Hamilton's dad Anthony Hamilton was a IT Manager, later contractor and then had his IT firm besides managing his son. Became a McLaren-Mercedes junior in 1997
• Jolyon Palmer's dad is Jonathan Palmer, former F1 driver, doctor, majority shareholder and chief executive of MotorSport Vision(owns a lot of circuits and organizes racing in multiple categories)
