Hoi,

The reasons.
First of all we are going to tell you why we actually have picked this book.
We thought this book was interesting because the book is about a boy who is going to live with his poor aunt so his life will change after that. We wanted to know how he was going to handle it.

General information about the book.
As you know, the title of the book is leaving home. It’s written by Jan Michael.
The year of publication was in 2008. The themes of this book are poverty and friendship. We chose poverty because the story is about a boy called Sam who was pretty rich until his parents died so he need to live with his poor aunt in a poor city in Malawi. The book describes his new life in this poor city. You mostly read about how he needs to work for the family and what he thinks about his new home.
We have also chosen friendship as a theme of this book because when Sam moves to his new house, he meets some children. He has to work with them but he can also have fun with some of them. At the end he knows that friends are important.

Characters.
We’re going to describe the characters of the book.
Sam is the main character in this book. He is Aunt Mercys nephew.
Before his parents died, he wasn’t poor and he had a lot of nice stuff like his books and sportshoes. When he had to live with his poor Aunt Mercy, his life changed and he wasn’t that rich anymore.
He can be nice and lovely to people but he is so attached to his expensive things that he would rather not lend them.

Aunt Mercy is very sweet to everybody. She takes care of many children who don’t have parents anymore. She also takes care of Sam so they live together.

Ezelina is Aunt Mercys daughter. She is twins with her brother Enock.
She is exactly like her mother, because she’s also very sweet and helpful to everybody. She is also friends with Sam.

Enock is Ezelinas brother. He is not as helpful as Ezelina. He can be nice but first, he has to know you well and knows your personality. For example, when he meets a stranger, he isn’t as nice as when he knows you for months.

Macdonald is Ezelina and Enocks cousin. He also lives with them. He loves to play football. But he dislikes Sam because he is jealous of his expensive stuff.

Summary

Sam lives in the country Malawi, in Africa. His parents died because of AIDS. He has to live with his aunt and her children. Aunt Mercy lives in the poorest part of Malawi. Aunt Mercy is also very poor. She has a small house with only one room, which she has to share it with her children. Sam needs to get used to it, because before that, he used to have a room for himself with a computer in it. But there are more things where Sam needs to get used to. He needs to do some jobs for Aunt Mercy, for example, he has to sweep the garden and gather wood.
Sam comes from the richest part of Malawi and he has things where the villagers never heard of. Like his blue trainers and books what he got from his mother. Other children would like to borrow his stuff but Sam doesn’t want to lend them out. The children of the village become jealous and one day Sam’s shoes are getting stolen. To find out who stole his shoes, you have to read this book on your own.

Reading part
Now we’re going to read out a small part of the book. We chose this part because in this part, Sam will see his new house for the first time. He is a bit shocked when he sees it because he didn’t expect that. And the interesting thing is that he exactly tells his thoughts about it.
*leest voor*

Our opinion
We didn’t like this book very well. It was pretty boring because there were parts which weren’t very interested or important. And there weren’t many things going on. So it didn’t really excite us. The positive things about the book are that it sometimes was interesting to take a look into the life of a poor boy.

Spell check, use it.
