The Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce recently received appropriate criticism for the significant subsidy it receives from Nashville taxpayers. ("Metro's millions in subsidies to Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce questioned," March 3) While approximately 500 Metro employees have lost their jobs, tax dollars flowed uninterrupted to the Chamber. While the administration was cutting the department budgets, $300,000 in annual appropriations went to the Chamber with unwavering support from Mayor Dean.

The annual appropriation to the Chamber is supposed to be for economic development activities. Indeed, through the good work of the Chamber's Janet Miller, the Nashville area is able to attract a number of new companies. However, the majority of those businesses and resulting jobs have located outside Davidson County, according to the Chamber's data. Its marketing and recruitment efforts seem concentrated on the relatively easy sale of Williamson County's green fields and superior rated public education system.

Chamber credibility is eroding

It would be one thing if the Chamber's mission and activities were in sync with the majority of Nashvillians, but the Chamber has launched a propaganda war on our citizens. The Chamber, led by president Ralph Shulz, heavily lobbied for passage of the Music City Center, which polls indicated had a mere 25 percent public support from citizens. The public's cynicism about the Chamber's rosy numbers seem accurate to date, as only a handful of conventions have been booked exceeding the capabilities of the existing and debt-free Nashville Convention Center.

One year later, the Chamber decided one of Nashville's beloved venues, the Tennessee State Fairgrounds, the "common man's convention center,'' would be better served by a wrecking ball for further economic development. Then, further eroding its credibility, the Chamber supported its position with a two-page "economic impact'' study. This report, which was met with ridicule and laughter from the development and business communities alike, suggested redevelopment of a treasured cultural institution would yield an outlandish 6,500 jobs and $2.5 billion in economic impact — roughly one-third of the impact of Nashville's entire music industry.

The Chamber's cheerleading for the Fairgrounds' re-development was made more peculiar in light of its silence on May Town Center, a private green field development similar to Cool Springs. It also appeared to run counter to its own mission as most of the flea market vendors are small businesses. Isn't small business the Chamber's target audience?

If the Chamber wishes to remain immune to the budget cuts affecting all areas of Metro government, it must somehow eliminate the perception that it has been reduced to nothing more than a political tool or pawn for the administration. It must stop being simple order takers for business relocations and start selling Nashville.

Nashville, which has been growing and developing for more than a century, has fewer cheap and easy answers for new businesses, but isn't that why we pay the chamber these ridiculously big bucks far more than any other government in the region? The Chamber also must stop taking political positions and entering into political battles, which should be contrary to its mission and its members' interests. If the Chamber does not stop, it isn't just its funding that is at risk; its credibility will be tarnished, too.

Een “oorlog om vakbonden te vernietigen”, dan wel een “oorlog tegen de middenklasse”. Zo noemen tegenstanders het omstreden besluit van de Amerikaanse staat Wisconsin gisteravond om ambtenaren te verbieden om collectief te onderhandelen over hun werkomstandigheden.

De Republikeinse gouverneur van Wisconsin, Scott Walker, wil het begrotingstekort van de staat terugbrengen door te korten op ambtenarensalarissen. Om dat mogelijk te maken zijn nu allereerst de rechten van ambtenaren ingeperkt. De Republikeinse meerderheid in de senaat van Wisconsin joeg de maatregel er doorheen in afwezigheid van de Democratische senatoren. De stemming heeft tot veel ophef geleid in de staat.

Vanuit de hele VS is de strijd met grote aandacht gevolgd omdat fundamentele rechten ter discussie staan.

Een voorbeeld van de aandacht die de zaak krijgt van landelijke media in de VS: op de ‘Ed Show’ van MSNBC noemt Mike Langyel, de voorzitter van de lerarenvakbond in Wisconsin, de gouverneur een “extremist” – “we zullen niet toestaan dat hij met zijn klein groepje de macht in de staat probeert overneemt.”

The NEA and AFT spend large sums on political lobbying so that public school districts maintain their monopoly control of more than half a trillion dollars in annual U.S. K-12 education spending. That monopoly, in turn, offers a more than 40 percent average compensation premium over the private sector, along with greater job security. And since both the U.S. and international research indicate that achievement and efficiency are generally higher in private sector and particularly competitive marketeducation systems, the public school monopoly imposes an enormous cost on American children and taxpayers (Coulson 2009).
