SICILY, ITALY (BNO NEWS) -- Mount Etna, which is located on the east coast of the Italian island of Sicily, briefly erupted on late Wednesday evening, volcanists and witnesses said on Thursday.

Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe with a standing of 3,329 meters (10,922 feet) high. It is also one of the most active volcanoes in the world and has seen increased activity in recent months

On Tuesday evening, the country's Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said it had recorded a slight increase in volcanic tremors that reached its peak by 7 a.m. local time on Wednesday. It then quickly diminished.

Hours later, at around 9.30 p.m. local time on Wednesday, a small eruption at Mount Etna sent lava down the mountain. "Shortly after [9 p.m.] an overflow began from the edge of the east pit crater," a statement from the institute said, adding that the lava flow was expanding in the direction of Valle del Bove.

The eruption of Etna lasted only about an hour although the lava flow remained visible as of Thursday morning, lighting up the sky but posing no threat to the towns and cities near the volcano.

As it was dark at the time of the eruption, it was not immediately clear if Etna had created an ash cloud. "The emission of volcanic ash is possible," the institute added.

After reports of mysterious mass animal deaths around the planet, photos of a fierce volcanic eruption might confirm that the end of the world is nigh.

Thankfully, these magnificent pictures of Mount Etna's latest eruption are merely a chance to revel in the awesome power of nature rather than a reason to start stocking up on canned goods.

The 3,329-metre (10,922-feet) volcano erupted for around an hour yesterday evening, lighting up the sky on the small Italian island of Sicily.

Etna is Europe's tallest and most active volcano and has seen increased activity in recent months yet its seismic might poses no immediate threat to the nearby towns and cities.

According to the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, a slight increase in Etna's volcanic tremors had been recorded on Tuesday, reaching its peak at 7am local time yesterday.

The activity diminished but at 9:30pm local time on Wednesday night, Etna roared into life sending lava spewing down its sides.

'Shortly after [9pm] an overflow began from the edge of the east pit crater,' a statement from the institute said last night.

While the Sicilian communities near the volcano were not threatened by the latest eruption, it has not been established whether an ash cloud has been created by Etna's new activity.

'The emission of volcanic ash is possible,' a spokesperson for the institute added.

Large stones, known as volcanic 'bombs', and a sizeable quantity of ash was released by the volcano earlier this month, though no lava was released on that occasion.

Known as 'Jebel Utlamat' in Arabic - meaning 'mountain of fire - Etna's name is thought to originate from the Phoenician word 'attuna', meaning 'furnace'.

The volcano has been active for around half a million years, with 15,000 people killed during its most violent eruption in 1669.

While its modern eruptions have rarely threatened the inhabited areas in the volcano's vicinity, a lengthy blast in 2002 was spectacular enough for footage of it to be included in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

Volcano experts said Monday in a report the volcano in Italy might have fallen back into a short calm phase before another active phase, “just around the corner.”

The 11,000-foot tall volcano had a collection of black smoke more than 2 miles high and spewed lava and shards of magma more than 1,200 feet into the air on Sunday before it calmed down.

The wind carried eruption fragments to towns of the large Sicilian city, Catania, but flight operations at the city were not affected.

"De etappe van zondag komt niet in het gedrang", predikt Zomegnan rust. "Er zijn al mensen aan het werk om de wegen die naar de top leiden, vrij te maken. We zijn niet ongerust." In de Italiaanse pers klinken de stemmen wat pessimistischer. Er is immers een kleine vrees dat de Giro-ploegen Sicilië niet met het vliegtuig zullen kunnen bereiken, wat hen heel wat minder recuperatie zal bezorgen in de aanloop naar de zondagrit. Na de zaterdagrit met aankomst in Tropea (Calabrië) moeten de renners per vliegtuig naar Messina, de startplaats zondag op het eiland Sicilië.

Monte Crostis
Garmin-Cervélo maakt zich inmiddels meer en meer zorgen over de veiligheid van de renners. Ex-rozetruidrager David Millar stapte samen met zijn ploegmakkers Brett Lancaster en Matthew Wilson naar de organisatie met de uitdrukkelijke vraag om iets te doen aan de aartsgevaarlijke afdaling van de Monte Crostis, in de beestachtige 14e rit.

"We hebben gehoord dat er zoals in het skiën netten zullen worden gespannen om ons op te vangen als we een bocht missen. Sommige bochten liggen op een klif", zucht Millar. De Schot hoopt dat de organisatie alsnog ingrijpt. "Als Zomegnan even nadenkt, weet ik zeker dat hij de juiste beslissing zal nemen. We zijn overeengekomen geen onnodige risicio's te pakken." (dea)

De situatie wordt met behulp van helikopters permanent bewaakt door het Italiaanse Instituut voor Geofysica en Vulkanologie.

De wielrenners in de Ronde van Italië rijden zondag op Sicilië. De etappe eindigt dan op de flanken van de Etna. Er zijn schoonmaakploegen aangesteld om de as van de wegen te vegen voordat de renners arriveren. (anp/kve)

ROME, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The eruption of the Etna volcano in southern Italy early Thursday is connected to the earthquakes that rocked the Spanish region of Murcia, killing 12 people and injuring more than 170 others, a seismology expert said Thursday.

"We are currently witnessing an intense seismic activity in the entire Mediterranean area from Spain all the way to Malta which has a certain impact on regional volcanoes," said Domenico Patane, director of the Sicily office of Italy s National Geophysics Institute.

Patane said volcanoes are like windows from where underground magma surfaces and it's normal that they respond to earthquakes occurring in a geographic proximity.

"The Spanish eastern coast hit by the quake, after all, lies close to Italy, in the Mediterranean. Both Spain and Sicily are on the same earth plate," he said.

The earthquakes in Spain on Wednesday, which could be felt in Madrid, reportedly had their epicenter near the towns of Lorca and Totana in the Murcia region. The initial tremor of 4.4 magnitude was followed by a quake of about 5.2 magnitude.

Around 2 a.m. Thursday people in Sicily felt the earth slightly tremble and heard the sound of an explosion coming from Etna's pit crater. < The eruption sent flying massive quantities of lava and volcanic ash, which spilled on the main town of Catania and other nearby villages but luckily caused no serious damage.

The central airport was forced to close after it was submerged by the ash.

Patane said there were no severe risks for local inhabitants but just for buildings and infrastructures that could be damaged by the ash and condensed lava.

"It's normal to have frequent small-scale quakes and minor volcano eruptions in the Mediterranean," he said, "We're used to seismic activity here in Sicily and recently several minor shocks have been felt also across the whole of Italy."

Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe, with a 45-kilometer-diameter crater.

As die is uitgestoten door de Siciliaanse vulkaan de Etna heeft de luchthaven van de stad Catania doen sluiten.
Catania ligt slechts 25 kilometer ten zuiden van de vulkaan. De autoriteiten verwachten dat het vliegveld na een grote schoonmaak morgenochten weer geopend kan worden.

De top van de Etna ligt op bijna 3.300 meter. De vulkaan is daarmee de hoogste actieve vulkaan in Europa. De laatste uitbarsting dateert van mei. (afp/adha)
