TEHRAN (BNO NEWS) -- A strong earthquake rocked southeastern Iran on late Monday evening, seismologists said, but it was not immediately known if there was damage or casualties.
The 6.5-magnitude earthquake at 10.12 p.m. local time (1842 GMT) was centered about 16 kilometers (9.9 miles) from the town of Hosein abad in Kerman Province, or 99 kilometers (62 miles) southeast of Bam. It struck about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) deep, making it an extremely shallow earthquake, according to the Iranian Seismological Center.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the strength of the earthquake at 6.3 on the Richter scale with a depth of 12.4 kilometers (7.7 miles). The agency estimated as many as 49,000 people may have felt strong to violent shaking.
It was not immediately known if there was damage or casualties from the strong earthquake, and state-run media did not immediately report the quake.
Earthquakes, even light and moderate ones, often cause heavy damage and severe casualties in certain parts of the country due to poor construction, especially when they hit during the night when most residents are sleeping.
In 2003, on December 26, around 31,000 people were killed and more than 30,000 others were injured when a strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Bam - not far from Monday's epicenter. It left the area devastated with 85 percent of buildings damaged or destroyed in Bam.
More recent earthquakes include a light 4.9-magnitude quake on November 6 that rattled western Iran, approximately 17 kilometers (10 miles) from Dorood in Luristan Province. It struck about 5 kilometers (3 miles) deep, leaving 119 people injured.
And on August 27, two young children were killed and more than a dozen others were injured when a moderate 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck 76 kilometers (47 miles) from Damghan, a city in the country's Semnan Province.
Before that, in November 2009, a light 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, injuring more than 700 people.

TEHRAN | Mon Dec 20, 2010 4:46pm EST
(Reuters) - An unknown number of people have been killed in remote mountain villages in southeastern Iran hit by an earthquake of 6.5 magnitude Monday, state television quoted an official as saying.
"In some villages in the mountains several people have been killed reportedly ... but we have no specific figures yet," said a local official in Kerman province, where the quake happened. "Access to these villages is very difficult."

Reporting from Beirut — A powerful earthquake struck a sparsely populated district of southeastern Iran, killing at least 11 people, injuring at least 40 and damaging 1,800 homes, state media reported Tuesday.
The magnitude 6.5 quake late Monday struck 30 villages populated by no more than 4,000 people, state radio reported. Rescue efforts and damage assessments were being hampered by downed phone lines and landslides that have blocked access to some villages, official media cited officials as saying.
"The area was mountainous, and many roads have been blocked," Mohammad Barzang, a local official, told state radio. "From early morning we have sent loaders and bulldozers to open the roads."
Almost exactly seven years ago in the same region, a catastrophic 6.6 earthquake struck the nearby city of Bam, killing more than 25,000 people and destroying a medieval castle that was one of Iran's most treasured archeological sites.
Monday's 10:12 p.m. quake appears to have centered on the village of Hosseinabad, between the townships of Fahraj and Rigan, both less than 40 miles east of Bam in Kerman province, a vast region of high deserts and mountains.
Authorities in the provincial capital, also called Kerman, convened an emergency meeting to oversee rescue operations.
The Red Crescent, the local equivalent of the Red Cross, set up tents to shelter those whose homes were destroyed or left too unstable to live in. The Red Crescent of neighboring Turkey dispatched truckloads of blankets, tents and stoves to aid in the relief effort, the semi-official Turkish Anatolia news agency reported.
Iran is one of the world's most seismically active countries, crisscrossed by several major fault lines and hit nearly every day by earthquakes.
Iranian villagers continue to build mud-brick homes that collapse and smother them during earthquakes. State television reported that some residents in Monday's earthquake zone remained pinned in their homes.
