Zwaarste orkaan in 20 jaar teistert Fiji

(CNN) Tropical Cyclone Tomas battered Fiji's northern islands on Monday evening with gusts of up to 275 km/h (170 mph) and heavy rain, but weather officials had not received immediate reports of damage.

The Category 4 storm is the second-most destructive on a five-point scale. As it heads southeast, it is expected to sideswipe the main island, Viti Levu. The South Pacific nation's capital, Suva, is on that island.

"The closest it will come is 200 km (124 miles) to the east of Suva," said Alipate Waqaicelua, forecaster for the Nadi Tropical Cyclone Center.

Still, the storm inundated the capital with heavy rain and strong winds. Authorities imposed a nighttime curfew. Schools have been ordered closed till Thursday, and banks were shuttered till Tuesday, said resident Moses Waqavonovono.

"Squatter houses have been blown away in the gusting winds," he said. "The stronger structures will take a hard hitting tomorrow."

Ik wacht op een levensteken.

Ze zij al vanaf november op reis. Nieuw Zeeland vonden ze een beetje saai. Dit is dan wel weer het andere uiterste.

Devastating Cyclone Tomas Rips FijiMar

Devastating wind gusts to at least 160 mph have been hammering eastern Fiji as Cyclone Tomas storms through the archipelago on Monday.

The storm's eye, about it whirling the storm's most extreme wind, rated Category 3 to Category 4, has already clipped the eastern tip of Vanua Levu, one of two main Fijian islands. One smaller islands that has been slammed head-on is Rabi, off eastern Vanua, with nearby Taveuni next in line.

Vanua Levu boasts a population of over 100,000 people. Serious disruptions of power and transportation will take place.

Along with winds well above 100 mph, the storm's wrath was manifest in storm tides of 10 to 15 feet above normal along and near the eye path.

Magnifying the storm's destructive potential has been its sluggish forward movement, which has been only about 5 mph towards the south. Which means that the worst of the storm's wind, wave and rain have been prolonged.

The nation's biggest and most populous island, Viti Levu, has braced for severe wind and rain, but not a potentially devastating direct blow by Tomas. Nevertheless, the capital, Suva, was awaiting damaging winds and torrential rain.

Owing the storm's sluggish forward motion, extreme wind and wave will persist into Monday night and early Tuesday morning, EDT, over the southern reaches of the archipelago southeast of Viti Levu.

After leaving Fiji, Tomas will accelerate southward at least as weakening begins in earnest.

The Associated Press reported that thousands of Fiji residents have already been forced to flee to evacuation shelters. A mandatory nighttime curfew has been enforced by officials in Suva where schools have been closed through Thursday.

This will be the second and strongest cyclone to affect Fiji this season. In December, Cyclone Mick struck Fiji's main island, Viti Levu. Mick was blamed for several deaths and significant damage.

5000 people in evacuation centres in Fiji's north

Update: 12:00PM FIVE thousand people have been billeted at 90 evacuation centres in the Northern division in the path of Hurricane Tomas, according to latest figures from the Commissioner Northern Lt Colonel Inia Seruiratu.

Lt Col Seruiratu said each centre had been provided security with a police officer and soldier to help maintain law and order.

He said everyone in the centres were safe and well and assistance of food could be delivered soon to the evacuees.

At present the province worst affected seems to be Cakaudrove, which has 49 evacuation centres, with 25 in Bua and 16 in Macuata.

Evacuation centres are also operational in the Eastern division of Fiji, with 68 activated in Lomaiviti, 84 in Kadavu, and 77 in Lau.

TC Tomas is making its way through the northen parts of Vanua Levu and nearby smaller islands with destructive hurricane force winds. The cyclone is intensifying and moving south southwest at 10 km/per hour.

Authorities advised those in the Lau islands (the eastern-most part of the country) to take precautionary measures. This after a review of Tomas' path this morning saw it shift slightly southwards, turning it towards the Lau Group.

Mariners were also advised not to go out at sea in this weather.

Meanwhile, a curfew continues to be in place for the Northern division. Although police lifted temporarily the night curfew for the nation, the DISMAC office in Labasa asked that it be maintained in the North for the sake of law and order.

Lt Col Seruiratu said the curfew would remain until the weather cleared. But he said passes were available fo stakeholders to move around in emergency cases.

Western residents flee

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Update: 2:14AM MORE than 10,000 people are sheltering in 178 evacuation centres around the country.

Figures supplied by DISMAC show that eight evacuation centres are open in Nadroga with 153 people sheltering at the facility.

In Nadi 40 people are at two centres, there are 18 people at a centre in Lautoka, 12 centres are open with 477 people at Ba, six centres with 480 people in Tavua and nine centres with 367 people in Rakiraki.

On Kadavu two evacuation centres are open sheltering 252 people and 137 people are at two centres in Lau.

The Central Division has six centres open at Navua with 526 evacuees, three centres with 28 people in Naitasiri, three centres in Rewa with 229 people, four centres in Tailevu with 427 people and two in Suva with 80 people.

In the Northern Division eight evacuation centres are open on Taveuni housing 410 residents, 36 in Savusavu with 2488 people, 27 in Bua with 873 people and 24 in Macuata with 1899 people.

DISMAC officials say most evacuees moved to safety while there was light yesterday and took rations and water to the centres.

The centres have been opened to ensure there is no unnecessary movement at night and emergency services are not placed at risk.

In Labasa, firefighters worked late into the afternoon evacuating people from low-lying areas as the river threatened to break its banks.

There has been little or no communication with most of the Northern Division for more than six hours.

Thousands pack shelters as cyclone smashes Fiji

By Liv Casben

Posted 31 minutes ago

An estimated 10,000 people are continuing to pack evacuation shelters in Fiji and many schools and businesses remain closed as Cyclone Tomas batters the islands.

There have been reports of sea flooding in the outer islands, with some villages also evacuated.

The Fiji Meteorological Service says the cyclone is one of the strongest in Fiji for several years, recording wind speeds of up to 175 kilometres per hour and moving in a southerly direction at 15 kph.

A Sunshine Coast woman who is holidaying in Fiji with her husband says the country is well-prepared.

Glynis Timmings is staying about two hours from Suva on the Coral Coast and says precautions have been taken.

"All the windows are taped, all the boats have been pulled out of the sea and tied up to the trees," she said.

"All the schools up and down the Coral Coast have been closed and people are advised to stay home.

"They're looking after the tourists very well, and I must say that I'm not at all frightened by it. I think they've made very good plans over here."

Alifereti Fisaitu is a resident of Labasa and says it has been a while since such a large storm battered Fiji.

"Just experiencing the wind that we're going through now and not having to face the brunt of the cyclone, I would say from experience this is one of the biggest we will ever come across," he said.

The category four system is currently 230km north-east of Suva, after it moved over the far eastern islands overnight.

The director of Fiji's disaster management centre says communication has been lost on islands including Taveuni and Lau, and officials will not know what damage has been caused until tomorrow.
