1172 UK - Rendez-vous 6.02



De band werd opgericht door bassist/zanger John Wetton en drummer Bill Bruford, die elkaar nog kenden van King Crimson. Bruford had daarvoor al faam verworven als drummer van Yes. Na zijn periode bij King Crimson werd Bruford ook nog gevraagd als extra (live)drummer bij Genesis. Wetton verbleef na King Crimson enige tijd bij de Britse hardrockband Uriah Heep.

In eerste instantie was Rick Wakeman (Yes) bij het project betrokken, maar die hield het al snel voor gezien. In zijn plaats kwam Eddie Jobson, die naast toetsen ook elektrische viool speelde en meespeelde op albums van o.a. Curved Air en Roxy Music. Ook werd jazzrockgitarist Allan Holdsworth aan de band toegevoegd. Hij zat in die tijd ook in de band van Bruford.

Het eerste album verschijnt in 1978, en heet simpelweg UK. Het album laat een geslaagde mix horen van progressieve rock en jazzrock, in de lijn van King Crimson en Bruford, maar virtuozer en met een meer bombastisch, ‘symfonisch’ geluid, met avontuurlijke, doch toegankelijkere nummers. Belangrijkste songwriters zijn Wetton en Jobson.

Na de eerste tournee besluiten Bruford en Holdsworth het voor gezien te houden. Bruford keert begin jaren 80 terug bij een hernieuwd King Crimson, en nog later in 2 versies van Yes.

Wetton en Jobson besluiten door te gaan met drummer Terry Bozzio, onder meer bekend van Frank Zappa. Een nieuwe gitarist wordt niet aangetrokken. In deze samenstelling neemt men het album Danger Money op, dat verschijnt in 1979. Van dit album wordt het nummer Rendezvous 6:02 op single uitgebracht, wat ook in Nederland een bescheiden hit wordt. Danger Money is minder jazzgericht, maar meer in de stijl van Emerson, Lake and Palmer, met hardere drums en dikke lagen keyboards.

Van de tournee die volgt verschijnt het live-album Night After Night, waarop ook twee nieuwe nummers. Maar op het moment van verschijnen is de groep al uit elkaar. John Wetton zien we later terug in de supergroep Asia. Eddie Jobson richt de band Zinc op, en maakt onder andere de elpee The Green Album met o.a. Gary Green van Gentle Giant.

Halverwege de jaren 90 komt ineens het bericht dat Wetton en Jobson opnieuw samenwerken. Er worden inderdaad nummers geschreven, maar van een nieuw UK album komt het niet.

Dan Bejar zit ook in New Pornographers en Swan Lake, maar maakt ook met Destroyer mooie muziek. Zie dit nummer, let met name op de nuance qua zang in de slotzinnen, die daardoor ineens een andere lading krijgen.

Geen enkele ouder verdient het de dood van een van zijn/haar kinderen mee te maken. Het overkwam Robert Plant helaas wel, toen zijn zoontje Karac, slechts vijf jaar oud, in 1977 overleed aan een maaginfectie. Robert schreef de tekst voor "All my love" voor zijn verloren kind.
