Ze waren gisteren dus al in NLquote:My sincere thanks to Andrew of Hamburg. In sharp contrast with lots of people who perpetually hang around outside hotels, and always want to take something more, this kind chap simply shook my hand, gave me a wonderful self-designed commemorative plaque, and asked for nothing ... didn't even add his E-mail address. Thanks Andrew! Long May You Rock!
I try to build a bit of time into our schedule to be able to stop and meet people, particularly those who have waited a long time to try to shake a hand. It's harder than it might seem, because we are all at the limit of our energies on this tour ... the shows, the preparation, the travelling, are all squeezed as much as possible. If you stay fit, you can just manage it. And then there are times when you've been patient and jolly all day, and then at the last fence, you just get tired and grumpy, and cannot face another piece of paper shoved in you face, or another blinding multiple flash camera, or the cry of "just one photo!" I try to remember that many of these folks are friends and fans from many years, and this might be the only direct contact we ever get. But it's hard to distinguish these good folk from the parasitic 'collectors', who endlessly try to get you sign stuff, so they can shove it straight on E-bay to make a quick easy buck. I have no time for these people, who will happily suck the last ounce of blood from you. But I do apologise if sometimes I make a wrong judgement, and turn someone away who is a sincere fan. I find the whole business of signing your name on bits of paper pretty pointless, I have to say ... and I don't ask my heroes to do that ... in my mind, it would be an instant indication to, say, Eric Clapton, that all I wanted to do was waste his time. A hand-shake, and a meeting of eyes ... well, that very often does mean a lot to me ... and I find it sad that so much of the contact I have, with the people who come and see us, is lacking in that kind of 'appreciation of a moment'. It all gets lost, somehow, in a mad scramble to put ink on paper.
Well, in the end, the job we (the players) have given up our precious Family Time to do, is the 2 hours 20 minutes or so of the concert itself. That is ultimately what we direct ourselves to. And sometimes it's necessary to reject completely the doing of anything else, to protect your health and sanity, so you can give a true money's-worth to the people who pay their wages to be entertained by a great Rock Show. Freddie was a good example of someone who had this perfectly clear in his mind. He frequently used to say ... "Yes, sure, I can stand around talking to fans, and doing interviews with Press and Radio ... but you won't get a show tomorrow, because I will have no voice." So he mostly ruthlessly refused all kinds of this secondary contact, and in the end, everyone respected him for it. I try to tread a line a little nearer to the bone ... and often I can manage it, and still come out smiling. But sometimes not.
Tonight I am in Amsterdam, and enjoying watching the Sun go down from a high gable - it makes a huge difference to me what kind of hotel room I am in for the night, and a good view is a wonderful lift to the spirits. This evening, a welcome night off (though a travel day), I am blessed. Yes, perhaps it is a modest sunset, but there are trees and birds pleasingly harmonious roofs in Amsterdam, and - hurrah! - I have windows which actually open ... a rarity in many of the modern hotels we visit. And a few moments to write for Bri's Soapbox.
Wishing you all a peaceful Monday Evening. And a Rockin Tuesday!
Cheers
Bri
