Ok, first of all, I am merely sharing my OPINION of St. Anger. In no way is my word set in stone... Its just one guys thoughts. If you cant conduct yourself in an adult like manner, then, please, dont reply to this post. If you agree with me, cool. If not, thats cool too. Just be mature about it. For once, I would like to see an intelligent post around here. Also, Im not bashing anyone, Metallica included. With that being said and out of the way...
I heard the album in its entirety tonight for the first time. I heard St. Anger, as just about every one else has before, but I wanted to hear what the rest of the album had to offer.
Well, Im surprised to say the least. Im also saddened. Over all, I think its beyond horrible. But Im going to go into further depth, so dont fuck off just yet...
I started off listening to the TBA when it was fairly new. Which to this day, is my favorite album of all time. Its tight, powerfull, complex, and will blow you the fuck away like no other album in history. Kill 'em All is a DAMN close second. Then came Load and Reload. Definatley not the Metallica I was used to, but not really "bad", just different. Even though the tight powerfull sound was all but gone, it still had something. It had feeling. It had complexity. Each song was like its own story. Granted, I have done a bit of "Load bashing" in my day, but deep down I still like them.
Ive seen Metallica live 4 times, including "Philadelphia Free Concert" (which was my first EVER convert), "Poor Re-Touring Me","Garage Inc." and lastly "S&M NYC". Philadelphia Free Concert was a great way to start off as being a first concert, and I wouldnt have had it any other way. S&M was simply amazing, not much more I could say.
Metallica has played an important role in my life, some deeper than I care to really discuss in public. I, along with everone else, waited in great anticipation for this album. It could be a new beginning. Something that would blow the doors off of everything and everyone else. Something that I would again, be proud to blast out of the car with the top down, letting everyone know Metallica rules over all. I was hoping for a tight, clean, in your fucking face album where you could turn up the volume without destroying your speakers.
Tonight, my hope was destroyed. I knew what St. Anger sounded like, and heard some of Frantic. I couldnt judge Frantic because I only heard a short bit of it live, and we all know that live Metallica is virtually nothing like studio Metallica. St. Anger I wasnt crazy about to say the least.
Im not going to disect every song though... that would take too long. I will comment on the band members though.
Lars... what was he thinking? What is the point of a snareless snare? His drumming is loud, sloppy, and obnoxious. The snare is enough to give you a headace. I hoped that the snareless snare was only in the song St. Anger. Again, I hoped wrong. His bass drum is fairly tight though, I will say that. He is playing more a more advanced style than in the Loads, which is pretty good.
James... Vocally, he seems weak. It doesent sound like he can belt it out as he did before. His voice sounds tired and struggling, and this can be seen in the high, and low notes. The simple 7 stringed low tuned chords are weak and sloppy, sometimes sounding out of tune. The complexity of his riffs has all but been banished. Ive been listening to this album for about 2 hours, and not one chord sticks out. It all melts into one big blurb of noise in my head. Well, maybe thats Lars' snareless snare rattling around in there too, Im not sure at this point. And the repetativeness... what happenned to fully structured songs? Repeating the same riffs over and over, only to throw a soft, hollow sound chorous in there... just doesent cut it.
Kirk... Who? Where? Did you get fired and someone forget to tell us? He is all but non-existant on this album. Besides the faint harmonic chords that seldomley appear in the background, there is nothing else. Obviously no solos, and all fill and thats it. Im not quite sure what really happenned here, and Im not really sure what to say.
Bob... Your not a bassist. You merely follow along with James' lead, which isnt the true essence of bass. Bass is supposed to give songs that extra something that the guitars cant. You didnt do that... you did nothing. At all.
Im not sure what else to say. I guess Im just really disapointed... I hoped for more, which is my fault. I dont blame Metallica... theyre doing what theyre doing because they want to. Noone can tell them different. At times I think theyre trying to just fade away, rather than just hang up the proverbial hats. I would rather see them go out in a bang, that just fade away into a new "The Band That Should Not Be". But who knows right?
Eh, take this as you will. Im sure some 13 year old jack off will reply with something along the lines of "Fuck you, die!". I just hope not... I hope some of you can truly relate to what Ive written. If not, no problem. Please, share your opinions, good and bad. I started this post to get TRUE opinions of their new work, beings that its so damn hard to sift through all the other bull shit floating around here latley.
...and remember, the Metallica that was, and always will be. Noone can ever take that away.
L8er.

Well, I got the album this morning off of the Heavy Metal newsgroup. I see its being reposted as I type this.I started hearing the vids last night and I loved what I heard.
Fuck all these naysayers. Regardless of thier stupid comments, St ANger is a Heavy kick ass album. Its sad that some people cant accept it for what it is. Who cares if its not Puppets part 2.
I could have used solos though. Thats the only thing I hate. I dont think the production is bad as some say it is. I cranked this bitch and its a monster of sound that knocks you on your ass.
I have listened to the whole album about 10 times today and It's really grown on me.
The songs are not repetitive, lots of riffs. I hear some influences in a few songs from SOAD, SLAYER, SEPULTURA and PANTERA to name a few but this is all Metallica.
The album fits in with modern nu-metal music but this is beyond nu-metal, I look at it like Metallica's take on nu-metal.
I love the rawness in James voice. Sometimes I laugh at some of his out of tune screams. He just did a funny one on Dirty Window. Great song by the way!
Some of my favs are - Sweet Amber - All Whithin My Hands, Frantic, and SHoot Me again.
The whole album simply kicks ass and I absolutely love it. Its a killer album!
Oh yeah, today I cranked my amp and the album and played along with the whole album. Since I didnt feel like tuning to down all the way I just put my guitar in Drop D and played an octave or so up from the album. Still sound killer and I improvised alot of stuff along with the cd. Sounded KILLER!!!!

Was echt raar, zeg. Daarom ben ik benieuwd naar de rest.
