NASA in noodtoestand - Mysterieus object bij shuttle Atlantis; landing woensdag uitgesteld
Wetenschappers van NASA hebben vandaag een vreemd object ontdekt dat tussen de spaceshuttle Atlantis en de aarde zweeft. Het object heeft ongeveer dezelfde snelheid als de shuttle en is de oorzaak dat de landing van morgen niet doorgaat. NASA wil meer opheldering over wat het object precies is.
"Op dit moment willen we weten wat het is en hoe ver weg het is," meent NASA woordvoerdster Kimberly Harle.
Vanmiddag om ongeveer 13:00 uur Nederlandse tijd werd het vreemde object ontdekt. NASA maakt momenteel video's van de zichtbare delen van de shuttle, inclusief de vleugels en het hitteschild. Als daar onderdelen missen, dan kan het te maken hebben met het mysterieuze object.
Ook heeft NASA de landing van morgen met een dag uitgesteld. Het weer zat sowieso al niet mee, maar NASA besloot de landing uit te stellen na het zien van de beelden.

NASA tv laat beelden zien van het mysterieuze object. Het is slechts een zwart puntje, maar het object lijkt dezelfde snelheid en richting als de shuttle te hebben. NASA denkt dat het van alles kan zijn. Er is nog niets uitgesloten en er zullen vanaf nu nog veel testen worden uitgevoerd.

Het kan vanalles zijn, ze weten nog niet eens hoe groot het is. Het kan ijs zijn, het kan een brokstuk zijn die aan een draadje hing al aan de buik van de shuttle of....wat anders....Wie weet horen we later vandaag (vannacht) of morgen meer....ik ben benieuwd....het zal wel wat meevallen....

In the news briefing now underway at Johnson Space Center, shuttle program manager Wayne Hale says the object could be a piece of ice, the plastic shim used during tile installation seen hanging off the belly of Atlantis during inspections earlier in the mission or something else. Using the shuttle inspection boom for further observations of Atlantis tomorrow is something officials are discussing.

The US space agency's Atlantis shuttle has had its Wednesday landing postponed after an unidentified object was seen floating near the vehicle.
The delay will give engineers an opportunity to investigate the incident - and time for poor weather at the Florida landing strip to pass.
"The mission management team has decided to keep Atlantis 24 more hours in orbit," a Nasa spokesman said.
Atlantis is returning from the space station where it attached solar wings.
The first opportunity for a touchdown at the Kennedy Space Center is now 0615 EDT (1015 GMT) on Thursday.
The mystery object appears on video taken by a shuttle camera. It has been described as small and dark, and coming possibly from the ship's payload bay.
It was noticed as astronauts were testing the vehicle's jets in preparation for the return to Earth.
Tourist arrival
Mission Control has told the astronauts on Atlantis to hold off packing away the shuttle's robot arm and television antenna in case further inspections are required.
"The question is: what is it? Is it something benign, or is it something more critical we should pay attention to?" said Wayne Hale, the space shuttle programme manager.
"We want to make sure we're safe before committing to that critical journey through the atmosphere."
Even before the unexplained object came to the attention of engineers, Nasa was considering a change to the scheduled landing time because of unfavourable weather forecasts at Kennedy.
Atlantis is making its way home from a construction visit to the International Space Station. The orbiter undocked on Sunday to make way for a Soyuz craft that is heading to the platform with a new crew and the first female space tourist, Anousheh Ansari.
The US businesswoman is expected at the station with the new commander Michael Lopez-Alegria and flight engineer Mikhail Tyurinat at 0524 GMT on Wednesday.
