Out Hud

Since their 1996 formation in the Bay Area of California, Out Hud have played a complex but danceable brand of indie rock with debts owed to disco, dub, and post-punk. Prior to their 2002 debut album for Kranky, the group released a number of vinyl-only singles and EPs (for Red Alert, Dead Turtle, GSL, and 5 Rue Christine), built a small word-of-mouth following through their live shows -- which often caused otherwise sessile indie rockers to dance -- and relocated to New York. The group consists of bassist Nic Offer, cellist Molly Schinct, guitarist Tyler Pope, and a drum machine named Phyllis; they are also aided by mixing board operator Justin Vandervolgen. Offer, Pope, and Vandervolgen share membership in !!! (pronounced “chik chik chik”) as well. Let Us Never Speak of It Again, the group's second album, was released by Kranky in early 2005.

Aanstekelijker en meer om het lijf hebbend dan !!!, en net iets interessanter dan het enigszins teleurstellende album van LCD Soundsystem - Out Hud is zeker een band om in de gaten te houden de komende jaren. Met songtitels als Dear Mr. Bush, there are over 100 words for shit and only 1 for music. Fuck You, Out Hud of Hair Dude, You're Stepping on my Mystique weten ze ook op dat front originaliteitspunten te scoren, en met One Life to Leave en It's For You van het vorig jaar verschenen album Let us never speak of it again wisten ze zelfs wat airplay-succes in the VS te oogsten. 	Dramatisch op welke manier? Vooral van technische aard, of speelden ze gewoon heel slecht?

	Er werd op een dusdanig losse manier gespeeld dat de hele essentie van Out Hud, experimentele dansbare jams, teniet werd gedaan. Verschrikkelijk nonchalant en uitermate ongeīnteresseerd. Of het nu vermoeidheid was, onkunde of simpelweg arrogantie weet ik niet. Het schijnt wel dat ze een aantal maanden later in Paradiso revanche hebben genomen. Wat is nu ook alweer de link met !!! ? Ze delen een aantal leden, niet?

	Yup, drie van de leden zitten ook in !!!. En ze hebben in het verleden ook split-EPs uitgebracht. En hopelijk doen ze dit jaar ook wat Europese festivals aan.
