Johnny Marr Officially a Member of Modest Mouse

What began as merely a flirtation has now blossomed into a full-blown romance, as Modest Mouse and ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr have gone public with their intention to stay together forever and ever (or at least until the end of the next Modest Mouse tour).

As previously reported, Marr and Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock had been working on songs together for the next Modest Mouse album. The partnership wasn't supposed to extend beyond that, but, as Brock revealed to RollingStone.com yesterday, the guys ended up liking each other so much, they didn't want the fun to end just yet. Brock said, "He made a cautious commitment to write and record with us, and then the tighter we got, he was like, 'okay, let's tour too.' Then he was pretty much a member of the band-- not pretty much. He's a full blown member of the band. It's really fuckin' nice."

Rolling Stone also reports that the new album was recorded at Sweet Tea studios in Mississippi, just like the last Modest Mouse LP, 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News. The forthcoming disc is "a nautical balalaika carnival romp" according to Brock, and its tentative title is We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. Liars are totally pissed they didn't think of that first.
Modest Marr currently have only one gig scheduled, and it's an appearance at the Bang Music Festival on November 11 at Miami's Bicentennial Park. Gnarls Barkley, Los Amigos Invisibles, Kinky, Yerba Buena, Tiësto, and a bunch of other raver people are also set to play.

Modest Mouse Unveil Dead Tracklist, Release Date

Already fond of long-ass album titles and long-ass tracklists, America's favorite humble rodents-- Modest Mouse-- have finally revealed the long-ass details behind their latest LP after a, um, extensive delay.

According to Billboard.com and verified by a publicist, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank-- boasting guitar-work from new recruit Johnny Marr, guest appearances from the Shins' James Mercer, and that sunny first single "Dashboard"-- hits stores via Epic on March 20. It has 14 tracks, including the not-so-smartly-titled "Steam Engenius".

The digitally-inclined may preorder We Were Dead from iTunes beginning January 30, thereby ensuring themselves access to a "Dashboard" download and some swank behind-the-scenes video shoot footage. Actually we have no idea if it's truly swank, we just like saying swank a lot. Swank? Swank. We hope it's more than this, though.

Modest Mouse will hop in their humble tour stretch-Hummers this spring for a presumably long-ass TBA jaunt in support of their new collection of songs, including previously reported stops at the ATP vs. the Fans festival and Barcelona's Primavera Sound.

Uiteraard!

Mijn eerste en tweede indruk zijn ook erg positief. Wel een vuistdik album (60 minuten, 14 tracks), en niet alle tracks geven meteen hun geheimen prijs, maar het klinkt na twee draaibeurten als een bijzonder goede, veelzijdige plaat die in het verlengde ligt van de vorige. Nu nog hopen dat ze binnenkort weer eens naar Nederland komen!
