Reds Set To Clinch Agger Deal
Fri 06 Jan, 7:09 AM

Reports in Denmark suggest Liverpool are close to completing a deal for Brondby defender Daniel Agger.

State broadcasters DR say Agger's agent Per Steffensen was in Liverpool on Wednesday and the centre-back has now agreed personal terms with the European champions, who have only to settle on a fee with Brondby - expected to be around £5.5million.

The 24-year-old has been a long-term target for Rafael Benitez, who has been seeking cover for Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia.

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry told DR: "He is a central defender and we need at least one defender so we have a list of possibles.

"His name is on it - but that's all I want to say at this moment in time."

REDS COMPLETE THEIR FIRST SIGNING OF 2006

Mark Platt 02 January 2006

Liverpool completed their first signing of 2006 on New Years Day when youngster Paul Anderson officially became a Reds player following a trial period at the club.
The former Hull City winger arrives at Anfield as part of the deal that sees John Welsh move in the opposite direction.

A highly-rated 17-year old, Anderson has impressed in several appearances for the reserves and also caught the eye in the recent FA Youth Cup victory over Cardiff.

Born in Leicester, he joined Hull as a trainee and was spotted by Liverpool scouts when playing for the Tigers' Academy side.

Reds edge classic

3-5

Howard 31, Robinson 43, Nicholls 53 (pen)

Gerrard 16, Sinama Pongolle 62, 74, Alonso 69, 90

The FA Cup Third Round Proper
Kenilworth Road
Saturday 7 January 2006
Winning clubs receive £40,000

Liverpool came from behind to overcome a spirited Luton performance in a magnificent eight-goal FA Cup thriller at Kenilworth Road.

The Reds were on the rack for much of the first hour of the game, but ended up in the hat for the next round thanks to braces from Xabi Alonso and substitute Florent Sinama Pongolle.

Luton were lively from the start and were not in awe of the European Champions, but it was the Reds who opened the scoring on 16 minutes with a patient move finished by their talisman, Steven Gerrard.

Djibril Cisse attacked down the right and fed the ball across to Peter Crouch. But the England striker couldn't work an opening with his back to goal and returned it wide to the Frenchmen. He laid the ball on for Gerrard to whip in from the edge of the box curling over Marlon Beresford and into the net.

The Hatters, though, didn't drop their heads and began to cause problems to Liverpool's defence, so rarely breached this season. Steve Howard came close shooting wide from Rowan Vine's cross as Rafa Benitez's Premiership side started to feel the pressure.

Howard then gave the home crowd something to cheer. Following a neat move in Liverpool territory, Luton cut open their opponents before Howard took the ball around Scott Carson and poked home into the net.

If that wasn't enough, Luton kept pushing and could have two more when first a Heikkinen header was cleared from the line by Steve Finnan and then Carson was forced to save from a powerful Vine shot.

At the other end, Crouch and Cisse weren't getting a sniff and rarely troubled Luton's back line, while every 50-50 challenge was won by a white shirt.

Just before the break, Luton made their hard work count when a ball into the feet of Steve Robinson saw the skilful forward turn Jamie Carragher inside the box and he fired low into the bottom corner of the net to give Mike Newell's Championship outfit a 2-1 lead.

But Luton almost handed Liverpool a gift of an equaliser right after the change around. A mistake in midfield allowed Kewell through on goal as he closed in on Beresford he squared to Gerrard and, though the ball looked too far in front of the skipper, a trip by Luton's Paul Underwood sent Gerrard to the floor and Mark Clattenburg awarded Liverpool a penalty.

Cisse stepped up but his crisp shot was close to Beresford and the veteran stopper made a fine save holding the strike firmly.

It was Liverpool's turn to hand out some late Christmas gifts and when Vine dispossessed Sami Hyypia inside the Reds' half on 53 minutes, he was clean through with just Carson to beat.

The England Under-21 man was forced to make an attempt to halt Vine but caught the trailing foot of the striker on the edge of the box and Clattenburg again pointed to the spot and Kevin Nicholls dispatched with confidence.

Liverpool now had to raise their game if they wanted to avoid a second successive Third Round exit to Championship opposition. Benitez, who looked angry at his side's lack of grit, made an offensive change bringing Frenchman Florent Sinama Pongolle on for Momo Sissoko.

With his first real chance just after the hour mark following a through ball from Gerrard, he put Liverpool back in the game, driving under Beresford, to set up an exciting final 30 minutes.

Luton weren't knocked out of their stride and still looked to extend their lead, but Liverpool now appeared like they'd found the itch that they hadn't been able to scratch.

Xabi Alonso provided this fantastic FA Cup tie with one of the goals of the season to draw the Reds level, cracking a 35-yard shot over the head of Beresford and sneaking under the bar.

Relief for Liverpool, agony for Luton and it was soon to get worse as the Reds added a fourth from Pongolle's header to restore their lead lost in the 31st minute.

With the match running away from Luton, a corner encouraged Beresford forward, dreaming of Cup headlines. But as the move broke down, Liverpool, through Alonso, carried the ball forward and from deep inside his own half, the Spanish midfielder took a pot shot.

Players and fans alike could only watch on as the ball rolled into the Luton goal to seal the win and provide a glorious finish to an amazing 90 minutes of football.

Luton Town: Beresford, Foley, Coyne, Heikkinen (Barnett 74), Underwood, Edwards (Feeney 81), Nicholls, Robinson, Brkovic (Showunmi 81), Howard, Vine. Subs Not Used: Morgan, Brill.

Liverpool have revealed they have agreed a deal "in principle" for Brondby's Denmark international defender Daniel Agger.
Agger is believed to be on Merseyside for a medical prior to a £5.8m move, according to reports.

The 21-year-old was pulled out of a training camp with Brondby so he could complete his switch to Anfield.

Agger is a long-time Reds' target but the move almost fell through when Brondby raised their price.

However, the two clubs are now thought to have agreed a deal which is subject to Agger passing a medical.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said: "Daniel is a player we have been following for a long time.

"We first spoke to Brondby about the player when we were in Monaco playing the Super Cup final. At that time, their chairman said he wasn't for sale.

"We scouted Daniel for a long time but then he picked up an injury. When he returned to fitness we watched his first game back and we knew he was at the kind of level we require, even though he played only 25 minutes.

"We've been told he's one of the best centre-halves in Denmark for 20 years. A lot of scouts have spoken highly of him and there has been lots of interest from other clubs.

"I wouldn't say he was a particularly aggressive style of player," said Benitez.

"I think he is a very clever type of defender. His positional sense is very good, for example, and he reads the game well. Of course, there are areas he needs to improve, but he is young and we will help him.

"He will be an option for the first team within a short space of time."

The Dane is due to join up with his country's under-21 squad for a two-week training camp in Chile on Monday.

Agger played in Denmark's 4-1 win against England in August.

And Denmark coach Morten Olsen is delighted he is moving to the Premiership.

He said: "He is confident about what he can do at the moment - he still has something to learn and he has a good mentality and if he goes to Liverpool I can only say they will have a top-class player.

"He certainly has to play 25 games because only in that way will he become a better player, and he is only 21 so he is not a player for the bench.

"Of course he has got to accept he maybe cannot play in the first team in every game but I am sure he will show that he is a top-class player.

"(This is a good move) for Daniel Agger and for the Danish national team because the Premier League is a top-class league."

Daniel Agger was born in Denmark on 12th November 1984.

Daniel is the fifth Dane to sign for Liverpool following Jan Molby, Torben Piechnik, Michael Stensgaard and Jorgen Nielsen.

Agger is a Danish international and impressed when he marked Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney during Denmark's 4-1 win over England in August 2005.

He has four caps and scored one goal for Denmark.

Agger made his international debut on June 2nd 2005 against Finland when he marked former Red Jari Litmanen. Sami Hyypia also played.

He started his career in Demark with Rosenhoj before moving to Brondby.

Agger made his Brondby debut at the age of 19 in a league match against OB Odense.

While his best position is centre half, Agger has a sweet left foot and can also play left back.

Former Anfield Great Dane Jan Molby rates Agger highly and says: "Daniel Agger is a good player in his twenties. He has only played first class football in Denmark for twelve months. He's a good talent and I rate him. He's very calm, left-footed, good in the air and a good reader of the game."

Daniel was honoured in Denmark last year when he was awarded the 'find of the year' in all sports in Denmark for 2005.

Alvast bedankt!
